It's a metaphor for Hell! "The devil's drivin' that long black train." There are many ways to "punch your ticket" but the choice is between Heaven (victory) and Hell (the Long Black Train).

@@guygoodwin6889 You are both wrong. It's a metaphor for sin. The "Middle of nowhere" is the metaphor for Hell. It's where the train (sin) leads. Even if you are already on the long black train, you can still get off. There is Victory in the Lord, so by turning to the Lord you can be Saved. I love the song though I don't believe in the message myself. It's too evangelical, and I don't think the Evangelicals are really true believing Christians. They don't behave as Christians are suppose to behave, and the devotion they have thrown behind Trump just proves that to me even more. I can't think of anyone who represents the personification of sin better than Donald Trump. He is greedy, slothful, vain, lust filled, dishonest... He is a tractor to this country and an enemy to democracy. And so are those who support him.

Haven't heard this one in forever. Love this song. The train is a metaphor for evil. He's telling you to stay away from it and "cling to the Father". And yes the train was taking away those who gave into the temptation and evil.

Loved your reaction. This song could easily be a song we sing at church. The spiritual references are all over this one. This isn't a "smash you in the face with Jesus" song, but it's a more than subtle Gospel song. It was interesting to see someone not immersed in Southern America culture, or Southern Baptist culture in particular, react to this one. Keep doing what you do, and we guys in the southern US love you so much!

I actually cracked up and scared my dog when you said you about shit yourself...😂😂😂 The train is a metaphor for sin, those who weren’t “picked up” by the train fought the temptation of sin. That’s how I always took it. You’d like the version with Ralph Stanley even more.

Got a behind the scenes look at this song, Why don't we just dance, three wooden crosses and more.. was like a private concert, and he is a Clemson Univ football fan so we got to talk sports, family, memories of growing up in South Carolina, and folks we both knew. After listening to all those Hank Williams train songs, a strange thing happened to him on his way home. "As I was walking back to my apartment, I had a vision of a wide open place on the plains, with a train track running straight down the middle of the fields. It was completely dark, but there was a harvest moon that was lighting up the sky. I noticed a bunch of people standing around this track. A long, beautiful, shiny black train came down the track, and the people were trying to decide whether to get on it. This was the first song he wrote and recorded. He was invited to the Grand Ole Opry and had no back up song and ended up singing it twice on the stage. He was still in college. He has had many hits since then.

Thanks for reacting to this one. Always reminds me of my grandma Louise. This is the second time today I thought of her and smiled. My nephew shared a short video clip of her enjoying Thanksgiving dinner a couple years before she passed away. After I would get her washed up and ready for her day, so many times she would ask me to play this for her. One of her favorites.

I always considered this an old time Gospel song disguised as a Country song. It kinda reminded me of something Johnny Cash or Porter Waggoner would have recorded. Its funny but when this song and video vame out, there were protests, but not from who you would think. A Railroad Safety group protested it, saying the video encouraged people to walk on railroad tracks. Josh Turner responded with "Its not literal, its an allegory."😉

There is a story behind this song, that after Josh Turner wrote the song, he bought a map that showed where stars lived and drove to Johnny Cash's home. Knocked on the front door was invited in and played it for Johnny hoping to sell it to him. Johnny's reply was something along the lines of Son people have heard enough songs from me about trains, you ought'a sing it yourself. About the song simple, the train is temptation and it rides on the rails of sin, sin leads to destruction to engineer is the devil, so cling to God and His Holy name and rise above the temptation and the sin. Because there is Victory (Salvation) in the Lord!

I'm like you. I pretty much spent my whole life going off the feel and sound of music, because my ear gravitates towards the instrumentation and vocal notes. But I started making myself pay attention to the lyrics more in the past year or so. I found that I ended up liking some songs that I wouldn't have normally liked, due to good lyrics. I also found that some songs that I once really liked, I couldn't like anymore due to the message in the lyrics. But I also found a deeper appreciation for some songs that I liked, because they had a good message in the lyrics.

It's a gospel song. Appalachian folk often uses metaphors. The message is the chorus. Another song with a train metaphor but opposite us People Get Ready. The Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck version is brilliant.

I totally agree with Carlos, if you listen early in the song he talks about the rails of sin or something along those lines. So Carlos Rios said it best when he said the Long Black Train is the path to sin and self destruction. The part where the train is passing through people is representing the decision to ride the train and lose yourself in self destruction or choosing to not take the train and put yourself on the path to victory over those things that would destroy your life (represented in the video: alcohol, drugs, sex, prostitution, gluttony, Pregnancy our of wedlock or teenage pregnancy, and suicide) Basically to me the song is trying to provide the message that regardless of what is trying to take control of your life or the situation you may find yourself in, you ALWAYS have a choice, take the train or don't take the train. You have the ability the determine your own direction in life. Don't let the devil determine where you go.

Spot on! It's not always easy to get the meaning of a song, hearing it for the first time, but you nailed it! I feel like it's my lucky day because you played two great Josh Turner songs! He's got another one out now called " I'm no stranger to the rain", which is a remake of a Keith Whitley song. Also worth a listen. I'm hoping someday you will get around to George Strait. (The king of country) 60 #1 smash hits. I couldn't even pick a recommendation because if you played just one of his #1 hits a week, it would take you well over a year just for that! "The Chair" would probably be a great start! Thanks

It's a religiousish song about the choices we're faced with in life. The Long Black Train is all the different elements of sin, greed, drug addiction, alcoholism, sex, depression and everything evil that brings people down. When the train passes through them and they're still there once it passes they chose God and goodness and salvation.

Carrie Underwood - Church Bells, the song is incredible. and of course she can sing the phonebook and it would go platinum. But, It's another one that is like uhhh I don't feel like I should be smiling, but her voice is beautiful, etc. You should watch the video on or off YT. It's a good one. It doesn't matter how many times I hear Josh Turner his voice gives me chills when he his those really low notes.
