My recipe: ‘Throw it all in Energy Flapjacks’ for bike rides - the perfect energy snack for cycling

Looking for ideas for energy bars to take with you when you go cycling? Or energy bar recipes? I love to take homemade energy flapjacks with me on bike rides which I munch at various points along the way. My flapjack energy bars for cycling are packed with goodies like seeds, nuts, dried fruit, coconut flakes and oats plus a yummy caramel mix of butter, sugar and golden syrup. They're loads better than any of the expensive shop-bought energy or protein bars - and you can customise them to suit your taste. For instance if you don't like coconut flakes or don't have any, then omit them. Last time I made these I swapped the golden syrup for honey, but it wasn't as good, so stick with syrup! (Not literally...)
In this video recipe I make double the quantity; here is the original recipe which is half of that: 175g butter, 125g sugar, 2tbsp golden syrup, 225g oats, 30g flour, 125g dried fruit, 50g milled seeds (from Aldi) and - optional - handful coconut flakes, pecans, other seeds (e.g. sunflower, pumpkin, linseed, etc). I finally got them made on Friday, just in time for a big Yorkshire Dales ride on Saturday. Delicious! They were easy to eat and kept me fuelled up. For the next batch I’m going to roast the oats. Thank you.

Another option is to replace some of the butter with peanut butter or another nut butter. 50/50 or to taste.
