Don't get me wrong - 99.9% of the comments on my videos are really positive (thank you!) but the negative ones tend to have patterns and I thought it'd be fun to respond to them using the power of BASS! My goal for this video was just to show that while it's good to be open to criticism, hate comments are nothing to worry about and actually pretty good content material!
Songs in this video (in order of appearance)
The Power of Bass (original)
A damn funky bass line that you have to guess
Für Elise - Beethoven
Slapology (original)
Overjoyed (originally Stevie Wonder, my version is based on Victor Wooten's cover)
Suite #1 In G (Bach)
Special thanks to Zachary Brunetti, AhLun, Sugabeat, Colin Heberling, Timothy Gabrielson, Sid Stenersen, Turpid, David Geschke, Dario Cimmino, James Ansell, Rob Nack, Michael Forrester, 949 Designs, slatibartfast24, Kelly Henderson and all my other Patrons and members!

As a drummer, I'm mind-blown that people accept drum solos more than bass solos. I mean, aren't we mainly supposed to hold down a groove in a band aswell? So very true! It's like they fear that your 16-bar improv will somehow invalidate their painstakingly-practiced Eddie Van Halen pastiche I play banjo and bass because that's my comfort zone. Six strings? I just can't wrap my head around that! I'm happy holding up others by holding down the rhythm. And if there's a place where I can do more than just 4/4 tonic & subtonic I guess it could be called a "solo", but I always just thought of it as an extended flourish, like sprinkles on a donut Let the flash-kids be flashy. They've earned it. Me, I prefer that grin from the drummer when we gots that groove a-goin'. In that moment I'm Bill Wyman and they're Charlie Watts, and there's no better feeling

All of the haters' comments are valid to some extent. Yes, the guy is quite obviously misusing a guitar as a portable "piano surrogate" - he's literally PRESSING KEYS on the imaginary keyboard he projects onto the fretboard. Yes, no one else in the world does that. Yes, it's a useless skill for real-life rock bands, since no one in a real band will tolerate those lengthy and intricate solos, or any kind of individualistic showing-off, for that matter. In other worlds, Charles is a postmodern, Vanessa-Maeish VIOLINIST in denial, considering himself a metallist rocknrolla dude while doing mostly shades of Well-Tempered Clavier. Also, the phrase "solo bass" sounds wrong, because in 95% of those solos, some sort of drums are heard, so it's DUET bass. Without the beat, the bass guitar always sounds forlorn and drab, no matter how amazing the talent playing it is. Same is true for all string instruments (fiddle, cello, contrabass) - all except the acoustic guitar, which can sometimes produce passable standalone music. There used to be an instrument called KEYTAR - a piano keyboard worn like a guitar, and I think Charles is trying to use an actual guitar IN THAT SAME WAY - that is, to fingertip himself through fancy PIANO STUFF without having to lug any kind of actual piano around. Also without the stigma of the nerdiness always associated with pianists. Still, quite likely the best guitarist on youtube - or even best _musician._ On a side note: why doesn't Charles have the creepy long fingernails which ALL OF the other youtube GUITARISTS have? Looking at those fingernails is enough to turn 99% of aspiring musicians off guitar-playing, yet somehow a guy has achieved insane proficiency WITHOUT them dorky nails? What?!!

@@goodkinomankolyaevgrafov6412he's a bassist? Not a guitarist. Also tapping is a super common technique any rock and metal, and it is nothing like playing a piano. Also, long solos are extremely common in rock and metal, although they more often go to the guitarist, the bass can definitely play a solo too. Also, solo bass doesn't mean only the bass is playing, it means it's the focus. What a weird pseudo intelligent comment. This comment makes zero sense and shows a misunderstanding of basically everything it talks about.

That Yoda advice is some of the dumbest advice ever given. When it comes to musical instruments, of course there’s “try”. Try over and over, and then try some more. New licks, new skills, muscle memory. You have to master each little piece to get a complex phrase, and you have to do it over and over. Then, when you have mastered that little piece, explore it, modify it, change it…then again. In music - there is nothing but “try”.

Charles is definitely more skilled. Maybe try listening to other good bassists then go back to Davie504. People tend to overrate him cuz he has a large platform, is very funny and many other people rate him. Strangely enough, I get it. I saw G3 many moons ago with Joe, Steve, and a very young Kenny Wayne Sheppard. When they closed the show with “Going Down” and did their cuttin’ heads thing, it was blatantly obvious that KWS was head and shoulders above the other 2 when it came to going with the flow even though he was also clearly nowhere near as good technically. I’m not saying this is the case with Charles, I’m just saying it’s a real thing and I understand how someone could say it.

Dude, I've seen tuba solos that would blow everybody's mind. Hi Charles, I'm a 51 year old and have played bass since age 12. I would love to be able to play even just half the solos you do. I grew up being told that bass is not a solo instrument and that it is part of the rhythm section. Keep doing what you do, it is mind blowing.

I'm trying to think what other things are like that...Like if you start drawing and are told pencils are only for writing. It's like bass *wouldn't* have happened without bands, so it's natural to think bass is only part of a band (and the front man is boss and what he says goes). Like I took up delivering Shakespeare monologues once, because there's a magic in making them sound conversational instead of overblown--People assumed I was doing it to be in a play, part of a theatre troupe, so would discourage anything that might not work with the usual format. So there's that, assuming no one would do anything except for a job, jobs that are already out there and well-known, maybe that's where a lot of this comes from.

50 now, played bass from 14 to about 25 and quit to be there for my kids (was either sleeping, working, or gone doing band stuff). Youngest got to high school age and a lil voice started whisperin. Step one was picking up a cheap acoustic bass and putting it in the living room next to the TV and computer desk. Even if just for a few min here and there, with it out I was grabbing it to mess with it. Step two is playing with someone/something else. I essentially forced an old friend to dust off his old guitar and play with me. Sounded mauling at first, but was fun to have someone to play with. Other jam along options exist here on You Tube if you search "drum track XXX bpm", "bass jam track" or something similar. Working on learning songs from your favorite bands also a great option. I favor open jam formats to playing along with covers as i think jams teach you a bit more about what your fret board options are. Obviously working on covers is super valuable if a cover band is a goal of yours. Step one (actually start playing again) and step two (jam with other people when you can and/or along with music) can be indefinite, until you have your chops back, or until you have a decent "set" list of covers you know. It actually took me a lot less time to get back to where I was as a kid than I thought it was going to, and by adding actual music theory to the mix this round I'm a much better overall musician. Step three was getting back into a band. I got lucky (bass player keeping my seat warm left right when i started looking) and hooked up with some amazing musicians in my age range. With that band for about 3 years now. My oldest say we are the Webster definition of a dad band, and I would have to agree, but I'm having a blast with music again! Definitely a zillion times better bass player now than I was as a kid (though there are pieces i wrote as a kid that are still challenging to play now, go figure). As one formerly retired bass player to another; It's never too late! You got this, just gotta WANT it while also having the patience to keep at it for for the long game. It's gonna be a several year project.

The hate comments come from talentless hacks that have probably never picked up an instrument in their lives, or jealous lesser players who will never reach your level of playing, so they try to tear you down. A lot of people ("purists"?) would reply: "NO WAY! WHAT ABOUT VICTOR WOOTEN? WHAT ABOUT JACO? JACO WAS THE BEST EVER, NEVER TO BE SURPASSED!!!". Those are just ridiculous statements really. They indicate an idolatry of a past (or even current) great, but refuse the potential that something can be taken further and built upon. To loosely paraphrase a quote: "This gentleman stands on the shoulders of the greats that came before him". And I agree that he's probably the most capable, and creative bassist I've ever heard in my 58 years. But that doesn't diminish Jaco, Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Jimmy Johnson, Jeff Berlin, etc., etc. one bit. The "who's the best" argument I've heard (usually about guitarists) since the 70's in high school has always seemed dumb. Above a certain level, it's usually difficult (and just time wasting) to distinguish. Yes, when a Mozart, Allan Holdsworth, or Chris Thile comes along, their unparalleled genius usually needs to be acknowledged, but for the rest of us mere mortals, "the highest mountain peaks around the world don't really differ vastly in elevation". They're all (mountains and musicians) way the hell up there and mind-blowing in their majesty. Just my unsolicited more-than-2-cents on a topic semi-related to the preceding comments...🙂

I find this very unlikelly to happen unless your friends guests all musicians. As someone who stumbled there by youtube algorith and watched like 15 videos , i would definitelly not manage to differentiate between the bass and a guitar by looks only. Probably by sound too.

Why to response to those who do not understand or feel the music You play?) The music, the style, the manner, the technique - all things You do get me really really happy! The mere fact that there are such great universal young musicians on Earth is very encouraging. Thank you, Charles!

I'm sorry you even felt compelled to waste your time responding to those haters, man. You're a kick-ass musician very generously sharing your musical gifts online, and people who have nothing better to do than knock you for that really just aren't worth your time or energy. They're just parasites.

Love your playing! Keep it up!!!! As a trumpet and piano player I'm more familiar with the treble clef but have always loved the deeper tones of the trombone, bass, and cello and, if I had it to do over again, would focus more on one of those instruments. I would say that the haters are probably not capable of appreciating or playing at your level, otherwise they would simply sit back and enjoy the music. Bravo maestro!! Encore!!!

@@PaulaBean Because few people learn how to play it, more stigma is created because bass players are always needed. I kinda see bass players similarly to healers/tanks in WoW or video games in general. There’s a only a few of them compared to damage dealers and they get flamed for not doing something right. Idk I just think it’s kinda funny how people keep insulting bassists and then complain that there’s too few of them.
