Hi friends! Are you interested in teaching on Skillshare, or maybe you already teach but want to grow and become a Top Teacher? This video is for you! Hey Peter! I know, that's a great idea, but honestly I kinda like the editing part, it helps me develop my language as a teacher, which I'm still figuring out... Probably when I have that more structured I could be more confident in outsourcing it. Haha I'll keep that in mind tho, thanks for the suggestion!
@TomFroese
@TomFroese Жыл бұрын
Every couple of classes, I outsource production and editing - it saves me WEEKS of my own time (1-2 days of shooting + a few hours of reviewing footage and providing assets vs. 3-6+ weeks when doing it all on my own - time I could be doing client work instead) - but it’s expensive too. But I agree with @artsygio that doing the editing can help you connect to your content and hone your voice more.
@gio_vescovi
@gio_vescovi Жыл бұрын
@@TomFroese Hey Tom! So nice to see you here! I imagine it saves you a ton of time, I actually would love to know more details on how you outsource the editing. I think I'm still in a phase of developing my style in teaching, so it's an interesting process to edit the videos myself and it also gives me ideas on new ways I can film and create new classes, so it's still fun and part of my creative process. That being said, as soon as I have my teaching style more clearly defined I'm outsourcing everything! Hahaha I can only imagine how much time it saves you, it definitely is the biggest time sucking step of the process by far hahah. Thank you so much for your input, I'm gonna message you on Slack to ask about the outsourcing :)

Thanks, I'm creating my first class and that's really helpful! What are your thoughts on the newest Skillshare payment model? Has it affected your revenue?
@gio_vescovi
@gio_vescovi Жыл бұрын
Hey Adam! That's amazing, wish you all the success on your class!! I've been meaning to make another video just on the financial side of Skillshare, but since they just changed the payment model, I'm waiting it out until the changes are well stablished and we understand better how this all works. The changes were implemented officially in October, so we have only experienced it for a month so far. Yes, we all got around 30% decrease in revenue (I heard teachers saying an even higher number, which is scary). That's why it's important to have other revenue streams, because we unfortunately can't rely on only one. :/ It's frustrating for sure, but I understand they are doing this because there was a lot of fraud when it came to minutes watched, which was the only factor to generate revenue before this change. So they are trying to create a better system that benefits the teachers that are actually performing well, with real students an real engagement, and basically creating a system that's harder to "hack". We just gotta trust they will find the best way to do this soon, because right now the income decrease is pretty discouraging. I still love Skillshare and believe they are trying to create a sustainable revenue stream for us creators, so now I believe we have to trust and wait a few months before making any conclusions. :)

Great video!🥇 #1-What should a teacher do to keep students engaged after publishing a class on skillshare? #2- Please make a video about the financial aspect. Do Top Teachers receive a decent pay?
@gio_vescovi
@gio_vescovi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew! Amazing questions: #1-As soon as I post a class I do some promotion on my socials and send an email to all students (you can do that you the teacher tab on the header of the website) to let all your Skillshare followers know you posted a class. After that I make sure I give good feedbacks to people when they post their projects. I think that the number of projects posted on your class has a bigger impact on the algorythm than reviews (I could be wrong, but this is what I found so far). So sometimes I do giveaways. For example, for the month of august I'm doing a giveaway for people who post projects on my lastest class, by the end of the month I'll randomly choose one person to win a full SKillshare membership. So you can create some little challenges like this to encourage people to interact with you, and when they do, you interact back. This is what I've been doing! :) #2-I will do a video soon. I make a reasonable income from Skillshare, some teachers make a full time income from it. I read that top teachers make on average 24k usd a year (I still make less than that), but there are super popular teachers making 100k usd a year. So yeah, it can be really profitable if you make good classes! :)

Hello Giovana, Thanks for the informative video. You suggested using Epidemic Sound. I am wondering, which subscription do you use? Personal or Commercial? It is not super clear which one to use on their website. If I have to use the Commercial subscription, at $19 a month I think I will stick to purchasing music on another platform and reusing them from time to time. I think it would be cheaper. If I am producing a lot of content a Commercial subscription might be worth it. And please ignore my question if you think answering it will cost you more money if that at all makes sense.
@gio_vescovi
@gio_vescovi Жыл бұрын
Hey @portersblackboard that's a great question! I edit a lot of videos not only for Skillshare but also for KZfaq, so to me the 19 dollars is worth it for music + sounds effects. I use it all the time. But sound effects are easy to download for free online, and if you have another source for music that is more affordable to you, I think that's great too. I like being able to download multiple tracks so I can test things out while I'm editing, so it's kind of an investment on my creative process as well. Because I'm a Top Teacher, Skillshare also offers me a Musicbed (www.musicbed.com/) subscription, and I find they have even more amazing music than Epidemic Sound, and I don't know their price, so you might wanna check it out!
@portersblackboard
@portersblackboard Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the quick reply. Actually I figured that you would probably need the $19 a month subscription but I didn't want to call attention to it in case you were getting by with the $9 a month subscription for Epidemic Sound. Maybe if I start making a reasonable amount of money it will be more viable for me in the future. That is awesome that Skillshare gives you free access to music as a top teacher (maybe I can get there one day). That is certainly something to shoot for. Another place to explore for free music is StreamBeats by Harris Heller (gamer). It is totally free and he makes money from it some sort of way. I think I like the Epidemic Sound better but free is awesome. I will have to pay close attention to how you use the music as well. I have done a few courses and often people complain that it is too loud. Again, thanks so much for the great information!!
@gio_vescovi
@gio_vescovi Жыл бұрын
@@portersblackboard oh that’s awesome, I’ll check this out! Thanks for the tip! And yes, I get super annoyed with music in the background so I try to be careful of how I do it. The way I do it is leave it almost imperceptible, just loud enough to create a “vibe” for the video, without anyone being called to “pay attention” to the music if this makes sense. And I also try to change the music often so it’s not too repetitive (I hate repetitive music in videos, drives me crazy 🤣). So yeah, these would be my tips for you, I haven’t heard any complaints on the music yet so I’ll take that as a good sign lol hope this helps!!

Thanks Giovana. My name on skillshare Nizamuddin Siddiqui. I have a question. Do you add music to all class videos or the just intro? I am working on my next class. My class is based on Data Visualization Challenge not a creative topic like yours. Should I add music to all videos?
@gio_vescovi
@gio_vescovi 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Nizamuddin! I personally really like having music through the whole class, I think it keeps it more entertaining and fun, but that's just my personal opinion. What I do is I keep the music really low (almost imperceptible) while I'm speaking, and when I'm just demonstrating without talking, I put the music a little louder. I try to balance a little instruction, a little demonstration, a little instruction, a litte demonstration, for each lesson to keep it dynamic. Feel free to check out my latest classes that were staff picked to see what I'm talking about, no need to watch the whole class, just a few lessons in the middle so you see how I use music. @gio_vescovi
@gio_vescovi Жыл бұрын
Do you have an audience in any other platforms? If you do id promote it there, but if you don’t you can improve your SEO inside Skillshare. My first class grew super slowly and I didn’t promote it anywhere else. People started finding the class through search. I’d do some SEO research and maybe if the class doesn’t grow with time, improve the title and thumbnail. In the beginning, when you don’t have an audience, your best chance is ranking in search! So try to find most searched topics to make classes and really optimize your title and description for search. I hope this helps!

Would you still recommend people becoming a teacher om Skillshare now that they've cut the pay with 40-60%? Perhaps the cut didn't affect top teachers at all and do they still get the same amount as before November 2022? Skillshare switched to a different teacher payment model and instead of sharing 30-40% of the revenue with the teachers, they now only share up to 20% of the revenue with their teachers.
@gio_vescovi
@gio_vescovi Жыл бұрын
the pay cut affected everyone, including top teachers! not gonna lie, it is pretty discouraging to be making almost the same as I was a year ago when I was just starting out, the income has definitely not grown proportionally to the work through time, BUT it's still almost passive income at the end of the day. I haven't posted anything on Skillshare for the last 5 months or so, and I'm still making money with the platform, so I still think it's a great place to be in. Also, it's hard to answer your question because it depends a lot on where you are in your business. If you are just starting out (like I was when I started), I absolutely recommend becoming a teacher because it's a great place to find an audience in your niche, students are very engaged and from my experience, it really helped me build my business and my content to where it is today. But if you already have good income from other places, or you already have an engaged audience, I'm not sure Skillshare would be my first choice to be a teacher in. There are many factors that make Skillshare amazing, unfortunately the income part is not the best right now. I hope this helps, fell free to ask more if you want! :)
