My Rolex Explorer is POORLY - Rolex Service or Local Watchmaker Service?

Hi guys,
My Rolex Explorer 14270 is poorly, she's in need of a service, but I'm debating whether to send her off to Rolex or use a local watchmaker.
The cost of a Rolex Service is around £600 plus parts, a local watch maker would charge a lot less.

It seems like the AD was talking bollox when he said the rotor can only charge the watch to 20% power. Please disregard that comment.

Yep, any Seiko 6309 owner can tell you that lol. Great work, I enjoy your content! BTW, thought you might find this interesting. My 1603 Datejust was having what I thought were crown issues in that it felt very tight while hand winding, and didn't want to restart from hack when depressing the crown. I took it to my watchmaker and it turns out it wasn't the crown at all, the mainspring was having an issue.

Bark and Jack so question Adrian - if the watch has no papers or service history included would you send to Rolex to validate the watch as well as a service - I have a GMT master 1675 with no papers, I know it was serviced by Rolex in 1997 but have no service card to prove that. For the next buyer (if I do sell it) I would like to give them reassurance, as there are lots o fakes out there, does it help value? Help! John ps love your NATO’s, got one last month and it’s a beaut.

I'm not a Rolex (or any kind of watch) expert, but I find it hard to believe that the rotor can only provide 20% of the power to the watch. I think if you wear an automatic for a day it should be fully wound. I have a Hamilton with an 80 hour power reserve H40 and if I wear it to work for one day, (sitting at a desk) it will stay running for three days. I think the AD who told you that must be confused.

I recommend a watch repairer in Piccadilly tube station, it's a tiny shop counter that's been there for decades. If you can't find it ask station staff. Go early to avoid queue best before 11am. My hero, got me into watches - some people say his a legend, I say his a highly skilled watch maker with huge character.

I had the same problem with my Vacheron Constantine. A plumber pal of mine told me to place the watch on a flat stable surface and give it a couple of firm taps with a ball peen hammer. Of course I covered the face of the watch with a towel. Anyway the watch is as good as new now apart from the cracked glass.

My friend's father had an Explorer always ran horribly and no one could ever regulate it it was fast it was slow took it to three different places here in South Florida including Miami and no luck we were at the Daytona 24 hour race and met the head of Rolex and told him of the problem and he had given my friend a card and said to send it to New York to this man and he will fix the watch he did and when the watch came back it has run flawlessly ever since

Before you send it in for a service, have the watch demagnetized and see if that does it. (You can also buy a cheap demagnetizer online.) A grinding feel when winding a watch is a sign that the watch has been magnetized. That's what happened to my 16613, and the problem was fixed in 30 seconds.

Had my Longines serviced by Longines after 9 years of everyday wear. My watch had gotten beaten badly by me but Longines fixed it truly. They polished the bezel but still left my marks on there. The mechanics got a real overhaul though which was the true purpose but the guys in Switzerland knew how to take care of my watch and horror stories are often just stories. Specify what you want done and Rolex will most likely do it. But if something is broken they will fix it.

I purchased a preowned DJ TOG and then sent it to a the Dallas RSC all within the same week. My choice was two-fold: needed authentication verified (had papers only) and needed the movement regulated as it was running too fast. Also, I live in a city which has a service center and I was able to drop it off during my lunch break. The diagnosis was that it had been magnetized. I went ahead and authorized the full service and requested no polishing. They obliged, and they even retained the sticker on the case back. Apparently, it's atypical they do that as they will give your watch a solution bath before opening the case. Overall, I was pleased with the whole servicing experience and have a 2-yr warranty (minus coverage due to impact damage) to boot. Adrian, it's a shame your experiencing a faulty movement, and I hope you have much luck with servicing your Expy. Great content as always!

That's a tough decision. If it were me I would go local watchmaker, at least initially. It's worth trying to keep the hands and dial as they are too. The scuffs are kind of cool in a way. Well earned scars. You can always send it to Rolex at some point in the future if needs be.

My Local AD is a Rolex authorized watchmaker so I got to get a brand new RSC card, took half the time, and followed everything to a T. I also had the choice where the AD would send to the RSC in Dallas but that would be the same cost and take twice as long as well as the chance they could mess it up.

Based on my 20+ years use and service at 10 year intervals of my GMT, I would have it back to Rolex for service. I base this mainly on two reasons...... 1. It might be expensive, but if a part is "marginal" they will replace it rather than be tempted to make do.........2. I'm guessing that Rolex workshop themselves will have the knowledge, past experience and facilities in house to tackle rarer problems.

The Rolex service centre should be cheaper than that. I’ve had vintage pieces serviced for less than that! Their service is top notch, incredibly helpful, you can specify to keep everything original. I specified no polishing, no new hands, dials or bezel on the vintage pieces and they completely understood with a quick turn around. That might have been the case in the past, but I haven’t heard of any mistakes in replacing from anyone who’s used them. Mine had “DO NOT REPLACE XXX” on the order sheet in capital letters Plus the two year warranty is good. In terms of automatic, 20% is wrong. It’s more like 60-80%, depending on how efficient the winding it is and the mechanism for uni or bi-directional winding. Also get an app like Mainspring where you can use a mic with your phone to see if there’s any timing issues with your explorer

Thank you! Very interesting! From my point of view, my Rolex watches are serviced only if they require. That means it stops. An exception was my 1680 Sub which had some rust even on the date rotor. After paying a huge account everything was new: Dial plexi glass, white gold hands and even the wind spring was changed. End product my Sub became its third dial and looks like new. No more beating it is babed and kept for special ocations. It was a present I got from my dad when I was18. This used to be a tool watch for surfing and not a luxury watch like it is today!!

I was under the impression a service by Rolex would mean replacement parts - including dial, hands etc. and they would restore the case back to factory fresh. Essentially it would be as close to factory as they can get it. Me personally, I would find a good local independent watchmaker. Also, that Kermit is f**king AWESOME, so so nice to see it again!

What I don’t like is that a service crystal has an S in the etched crown. That makes me think of high end shoe manufacturers and what they do to mark their factory seconds. S = seconds = lower value. Marking something this way should only ever be done if it moves to a lower tier, for instance if a car has been in an accident and has been repaired. -Third option by the way: send it to Rolex and tell them not to polish it.

The only think I would switch up is the crystal if its chipped or scratched. I would not trust Rolex with any of my watches. I also would leave the scratches and marks on the bracelet and case. The watch can't increase in value unless it increases in size, or if it suddenly fills with gold, or if you add a better movement. No, it increases in exchange value for paper money if you were to exchange it for money, which loses purchasing power on an annual basis. What you mean to say is that if you trade it in for paper money you'll get more of it than you paid, but that doesn't mean much when all the governments of the world are printing it on the printing presses. The only way to see if it is gaining in exchange value in terms of money is to measure the purchasing power of the money you could get for it now compared with what money amount you paid for it, factor in the purchasing power loss of the money over that time, and then compare the two amounts in terms of how much gold you could have purchased at the time before you bought it with the original amount be the money you get after selling it back for money. You don't value the watch. You value how it maintains purchasing power of money. It's money you value, that's why the watch is in the vault instead of you wearing it. You are treating the watch like a stock.
@BarkandJack
@BarkandJack 4 жыл бұрын
That would be true if we were talking about property where if the market goes up, all houses increase in value. So you have more money, but not more buying power. In the watch market, very few watches increase in value. So buying power does increase.

No need for Rolex service, mine does it from time to time it is a 114270 and runs perfectly. The cure was to wind it with very short back and forward (very little advance) and then longer winds and it feels like butter... not sugar lol. I don’t know exactly why but after a couple of those “short” ones it engages perfectly. It is the same for my Omega speedmaster reduced from the nineties. Hopefully it helps.

The RSC at St James assured me that my 90s Sea Dweller with tritium dial would only get a movement service , no external parts would be replaced (ie dial hands bracelet). The lady there also asked if I would like the case polished at all, or a “light” polish. I went with the light polish. They said it would take 5 weeks and was quoted just under £500 for a full movement service. Hope this helps. I havent received it back yet, so cant give you a definte answer - they may still eff it up. A few users on the vintage rolex forum have reported quite positive reviews of sending their older pieces into the St James center.

Sounds to me like your Explorer needs an over haul. I just took my Submariner in to an Authorized Rolex Dealer trained to service Rolex watches. It had been 9yrs. since I last had it officially serviced and prices have gone up considerably. I tried cheaping out 3 years ago and went to a Jeweler who was not trained to service Rolex and wasted my money. Do not be tempted to take this option. Get it done right. You have no choice really. If you care as much as I do about your watches, (and I know you do) then bite the bullet and get it serviced properly. As it turns out, the Rolex Trained Jeweler I took it to told me now I don't have to bring it back for another 10yrs. Plus, you can ask them only to polish areas that you want or not replace certain parts you wish to keep such as a scratched bezel. These trained and Authorized technicians have the right equipment and knowledge to do the job properly and you get your watch back like it was almost brand new.

I’d send it to Rolex. Think of it this way when you first got the watch imagine you could’ve saved a couple of hundred bucks by getting one that was completely assembled by a local watchmaker from 100% genuine parts. Would you consider it? Of course not. You want it to be 100% from the factory, right? That’s kind of a big deal when it comes to Rolex; who takes pride in the manufacturing process above all else.
@thewatchregulator1761

Hi Adrian. If it has already been serviced by Rolex then it's 99% certain that the hands have already been changed. That's not really a big issue with modern Rolex though. They don't change the dial unless they need to as it costs them money and you would need to give them the go ahead for those extra costs. You shouldn't need to worry about the dial. The only reason I would send it to Rolex is for the following reason. The 2 year warranty on the work. You can then send it back to them every 2 years within the warranty and they will check it over. If you keep doing that every 2 years then you basically have no service charge from Rolex as it counts as a come back. They will check out the movement and pressure test it for you. If any work needs done then they will do it FOC. If you don't want it polished then I would send them the head only and write no polish in marker on the case and tell them it belonged to a dead relative and you want it to look exactly the same. There is always some risk involved sending the watch somewhere else for a service.

Its not true at all that you have no control over the repair if you send it to Rolex or the AD. Thats pure bollox as well. Before they do anything will send you a detailed quote and you can specify what you want done or not done. So if you don't want it polished, they won't polish it, and you can ask them to keep the hands. And its worth to do it as Rolex because they will change lots of little OEM screws which a local watchmaker may not have. And it will come with a 5 YEAR GUARANTEE. And if you DO get it polished it will look frickin awesome! I had my dad's 1960s Datejust polished and it was wow. But I made sure they kept the dial and hands. A service every 10 years works out to 60 francs a year so its not that expensive.

On my IWC Portuguese 7day, the watch’s power indicator will only show that it will winds to about the 4day mark when on the watch winder. However a day on the wrist will take it up to max (7days). I can only conclude the inertia on the wrist is sufficient to turn the rotor while the gentle motion of the watch winder will not.

I would say getting only 20% power reserve from the rotor is pretty conservative, unless you're really sedentary. Just from personal experience, my DateJust has been running for 250 days straight without ever being hand wound and there are 2 or 3 days a week when I don't wear it. Which means it sits around not moving for at least 36 hours (way over 20% of its 48-hour power reserve). My biggest concern about using a local watchmaker to service my Rolex movement is the chance that they may knowingly or unknowingly replace some of original Rolex parts with parts from a cloned movement. If that's not a concern for you then you should get it serviced at your local watchmaker.

I would go to Rolex. If you go local-are they REALLY authorised? Are they up to date with the latest genuine parts, techniques, tools and lubricants? I worked in the car industry for years until very recently. People would say they got their car serviced by their local guy who was BMW approved. Unfortunately, if you didn’t have that big BMW roundel above your dealership, then you weren’t authorised. Only BMW service centres are. I would imagine Rolex have something similar. Go Rolex, sod it, let them polish it and get a new watch back. Update us on your decision.

Adrian, for me the only down fall for this RSC is the price. Your dial and hands have no issues so they won’t mess with them. They will polish the case and bracelet but, it is a Rolex Professional job. I sent in my 1964 1003 to RSC Dallas, I’m in the states, and it came back pristine with new crystal and original patina hands and dial. My opinion, if you think your going to flip it, local service. If your going to keep it as you said, Rolex service center. My two cents (pence).

Since it is almost 20 years in use I believe you should now send this to Rolex and get it brand new. After then you do not have to polish for another in your lifetime but after such a long you get a new watch. Or else you can use a watch winder, well that is going to ruin the movement anyway. Do it before it gets worsen the movement. Leave the camera for now and save your baby by putting him into the best hospital. Atleast I would have done that.

Take it to a local watchmaker. Not keeping full power reserve, rough winding... sounds like the mainspring is broken. Hopefully that's the case, since it's a pretty easy and inexpensive fix. They'll be able to tell you what's wrong and give you a quote. You can then decide whether to send it to Rolex.

Came across your channel because I was looking to buy my first Rolex and wanted an Explorer. When I searched Rolex Explorer reviews, your channel was one of the top hits. This is all new to me and I was wondering why they would even bother changing the hands and face. Looking forward to hearing back.

Hey buddy, it’s great to hear my videos show up in searches. Thanks for the letting me know. Rolex are obsessed about their brand image and always want things to look perfect. There are a few reasons a dial and set of hands can deteriorate: lume patina, rust, dial discolouration. So by standard procedure during a service they would polish the case and bracelet, probably change the crystal, hands and dial. Always buy the watch you like, but I’m a massive fan of the explorer.
@Fah__Q
@Fah__Q 5 жыл бұрын
@Bark and Jack thanks for the info! Does replacing the hands, crystal etc make the Rolex less valuable since it won’t have the original parts anymore? Also, I’ve seen plenty of videos where people prefer the lume patina. Does that make the watch more sought after? Also loved you video about the different Rolex Explorer models out there and the pros and cons of buying them.
@BarkandJack

@@Fah__Q There are 2 minds around service parts and lume. The majority of people prefer the watch to have its original parts. But a few people do prefer the watch to be in good condition over original parts. Patina is a very personal choice. A light patina is liked by most, but patina can go too far. It's pretty much down to the overall look of the watch.

As more commonly used in my household: "feeling poorly." Oh that’s a tough one. I say if it was a newer Explorer I non-tritium dial. Take it to Rolex. That way it will stay the same pretty much. If it’s a service then Rolex should not touch anything else other than fixing the problem. I know Rolex in the US Dallas TX they won’t go beyond the movement when it’s a non-scheduled service. They will not touch a dial w/out the owners consent. They should ask if customer wants the dial cleaned if it’s worn out. They should also ask if you want a polish which is included in a service. If you ask for an overhaul which will cost $1200. Yes that’s when they will mess with the dial regardless. Since this is fairly a young 20 year watch. The dial should be mint. No discoloration patina on the paint etc. I would think they would leave your dial alone, but then again it Rolex. I would ask questions and get everything in writing first. However, I do know Rolex does things differently in each country. Since this is a tritium dial and do not trust Rolex to not touch your dial. I say play it safe and go to a local watch maker who is reputable and knows how to work on Rolex. Make sure the watchmaker will work with genuine Rolex parts of needed. Rolex can be assholes and strict. They are very particular when it comes to vintage watches. It’s bad enough they won’t sell you a bracelet or a dial swap w/out an exchange. Well good luck Adrian. I say go to your local watchmaker. Someone you can trust. Save money keep that tritium patina, don’t take a chance with Rolex, and get your Explorer back on your wrist. Cheers

Hey Adrian, why not send it in to rolex but remove the bracelet. That way they don't mess with it and get it serviced, but yes I would also go with a local shop that way they just work on movement. I learned the hard way and went to an Omega shop here in San Diego ca and wanted to get my 1dt luxury piece checked out, speedmaster automatic 3511.50, it was from the 90s and never had been serviced. I ended up paying $850, was blown away by the service cost.

I had a similar feeling with the winding mechanism of my explorer II. When you described “knife through sugar” it was the perfect way of describing it. I thought it was just the feel of the 3186 movement. However, it had a faulty mechanism that operated the hour hand (12 hr). When that failed, I took it to a local A.D. for Rolex, Who had a watchmaker on the staff. Got a full service on the movement, without any other work. That saved me a significant amount of money. If you can find an AD with a watchmaker on staff, hopefully you can do the same thing. Additionally, I got it back in five weeks.

Are you giving the crown a half turn in counter clock wise direction until the clutch is engaged before you start winding? By doing so you will ensure the clutch spring inside the crown to engage to its proper working position. Then you could wind the crown in clock wise direction to give the movement power.

Poorly. I had my Eterna more than 20 years all day on my wrist . Sapphire is like new, little scratches on the case and the strap, but not that bad like on your Rolex. 4 years ago a local watchmaker in Vienna did service the watch, no new parts needed, all in best condition, just cleaning und oiling for 160 Euros including proof test. The service was not necassary, the watch kept the time perfect (3 -5 seconds a day). And the best, 1993 the price for the watch was about 9000 Austrian Schillings, thats less than 700 Euros. Sorry, but I can't comprehend the hype with Rolex.

My seamaster and my CW trident both charge to full on the rotor. I know this because when manual winding these you can hear the "no over-wind" mechanism kicking in when it is fully wound. I can leave them on the winder all day, and when I manual wind I already hear the "no over-wind" sound.

Good afternoon, it's Mark from Hertfordshire (Datejust 36 blue). In my opinion, the answer to this question depends on whether you have Papers. Mine came with box and "Watchfinder" warranty card, therefore when this happens to me, I will pay extra take the opportunity to acquire Rolex papers. Seeing as you already have Rolex papers etc I would get it done by a recommended independent with a bricks and mortar service centre (ideally taking it there by hand) - save yourself a few quid buddy! Happy weekend

My 2016 GMT crown started to be harder to turn for several days. I started keeping it on it's side, crown down at night and now it's back to normal. Unsure if it fixed itself or if I fixed it. Maybe the seals needed some lube which now makes it smoother to turn.

It's ok to be concerned about Rolex wanting to perform expensive & unnecessary work and have the automatic default authorization to alter the appearance of you watch. Unless you've got wads of cash and don't care about your watch's looks, I might suggest using a independent watchmaker, where you have total control over what work is done and what parts are replaced. Also, using an independent watchmaker allows you to keep any parts that are changed out, Rolex keep all the swapped out parts.

Hey Adrian. I am so glad you made this video. If you recall, I picked up the Explorer this January, largely based on your recommendation video that you did for me. My watch does the EXACT same thing! I noticed it straight away. If my watch has not been worn and has stopped, then when I wind it manually (I give it about 15 to 20 winds, it is quite smooth. However, if its running and I want to charge it up, then it feels exactly the way you describe it(running a knife through a jar of sugar). I obviously don’t wind it and stopped immediately. I have only tried to do this twice, the second time to check if the first tie was a one-off. Knowing that it’s under warranty, I have not yet spoken to my AD but I am planning to do it now. I’ll let you know what they say is the issue and then maybe you can decide basis that...cheers

I very much doubt Rolex would even think about changing the dial or hands on a piece that young. If you don't want a polish, just tell the AD when you drop it off and it won't get done. You could try the service department of watchfinder if you definitely don't want to go the Rolex route, but bear in mind that any independent will not have access to official parts - a bigger deal if you suspect there is a potential movement malfunction
@BarkandJack
@BarkandJack 6 жыл бұрын
Hi James, Rolex view any form of patina as a fault and therefore replace the patina'd part. The lume on the dial and hands are tritium and have a light patina, so Rolex would most certainly change unless asked not too. You're right about most independents not having access to official parts, but good ones will. They might not officially have access to official parts, but there's always a way. Luckily, watchmakers live by their reputation, so the good ones don't mess about. Of course there are some cowboys out there.

Assuming the local watchmaker’s quality of work is on par with Rolex; I don’t think there is a right answer. It’s more a question of, if you have the funds or not. And if you have the funds, do you want to keep the “patina/character” or have it “minted”.

Hey Adrian ! I think you should go with the non-rolex service, as long as you know someone trustworthy, it's probably more appropriate for that kind of piece. I've also heard quite horrible stories on vintage pieces fron the rolex servoce. I have one peticularly good address in Brussels, but no contact in London in my mind. I vote rolex service, only because I feel they are so worth being served by rolex as it ensures the "track history" of the watch for the future. I had a datejust serviced last year for about £400 so its not all that bad (in the grand scheme of the watch's value) When it came back it was in perfect running order, the date flicked at exactly 12 (Before it had been 15 minutes slow) it now runs perfectly, it doesn't go slow or fast noticeably waiting months and it was all clean and fab

You have to take into account of the much larger crown on the Kermit Sub, which gives the extra leveraging advantage over the Explorer with the smaller crown, so even if both watches were brand new, the winding would feel easier on the Sub. Keep in mind that the movements are similar (except for the calender wheel)
