Hello Peter, yes, I think the 16 tooth really suits the Hunter for cruising. If you don't need to win the traffic light Grand Prix, that sprocket brings the Hunter back into Meteor-like territory. At 40 mph in fifth you were just purring along. Much better. For your type of riding, I think this mod will be perfect, can't see you changing back to be honest. Ruby says "I like chasing rabbits too Uncle Peter !" ❤🐕 Yes, she was very excited to see a rabbit in this one. She has been on to Saddlebags for ages, telling him that his hiking videos need more rabbits in them. Looks like you beat SB73 to it. Ruby has of course now subbed your channel 😂 🐕"Rabbit !" Cheers Peter. Love from Spain. Garry & Ruby

Thanks for watching this Garry - I can understand why Ruby did (thanks for the sub, Ruby - I'll try to oblige with more rabbits 😂🐇🐇🐇🐇). Yes that 16 tooth sprocket makes for a really relaxing ride experience now - much like the Meteor and presumably the Classic though with a bit more oomph being lighter. Better economy too which you'll highly approve of. 😊. I've ordered the high performance cam which I'll fit in the latter part of the year on Spitfire then compare the two - with and without... Cheers both. 👍👍

I'm not generally one for messing with the factory design, a big bug-bear of mine is kids who destroy the suspension and steering geometry of their cars, after all, manufacturers spend millions on R&D. However, in this case it makes sense, same engine as the classic, smaller rear wheel and you want a taller 1st/2nd to suit your riding. Good job, and hope it serves you well.

Thanks Icedidi and I'm with you all the way with messing about with things normally as I went through that phase some 50 plus years ago and it seems a good way for accessory makers to relieve folk of their cash. This I felt was worth trying. Really pleased with the result especially after a ride yesterday which involved a real mix of faster roads and steep narrow lanes. Many thanks for your thoughtful comments, best wishes and enjoy your summer riding. Peter

I've already fitted a 16 tooth cog to my Hunter 350 And I find it very good indeed, Fourth gear catapults you well up to over 60 MPH, Allowing 5th gear to just go straight into 65/70mph plus easier, And of course it drops the revs, I wouldn't recommend anyone to do this on these bikes who did touring or lot's of two up riding though 👍 I've also fitted a DNA Air Filter, a Powerage Silencer (in black, retaining the original Hunter cover), And I have also got from Hitchcocks UK, a Fuel X Lite System fitted, because of my extras, and I highly recommend it, Because it makes the throttle response really smooth indeed, The benefits are supposed to be, a much cooler Engine operation, allowing the engine to burn not as lean in places, Working in concert with the bike's ECU, Cheers Paul Foster 👍

Well now I get it. It definitely appears to suit you and the roads you ride very well. Adding a tooth to the front sprocket does the chain good as well. I would just like to say an impact wrench, electric or air powered, makes short work of sprocket changes. I enjoyed the rides as well. Raining here in Iowa with only a day gap here and there. So it's nice to go for a ride even by proxy! Looking forward to Thursday's video.

@@Lanes-Explorer5733 good morning Peter. My understanding, following a perusal of the Hunter wiring diagram is that the bikes speed is measured by two wheel speed sensors (front and rear) that interface with the ECU which then interfaces with the instrument cluster (Speedometer). The wheel speed sensors are used to determine speed and also signal to the ABS that the bike is in motion, hence why the ABS warning light extinguishes when the bike starts to move. As such changing the sprocket will not affect the speedometer values. Hope this answers the query 😀👍🏻

Thanks for a very thought provoking report Peter. I do a reasonable amount of commuting on 50-60kph roads. There aren’t many lanes where I live so most of my adventures involve riding on roads with 80 or 100kph limits. It’s on these roads that I often feel a sixth gear would make for a more relaxed ride. From what I have seen from your experiments, a sprocket change could give me what I’m looking for at higher speeds without significantly affecting performance around town. It would be interesting to see what affect the modification has on RPM at those higher speeds. I wonder if anyone has done that. At the end of the day it’s a relatively inexpensive and easily reversible modification isn’t it? I shall think on! All the best, Roy.

Hello Roy. Many thanks for watching this. I know only a few will really be interested in making the change but I really do think that unless you're going to be trickling through congested city streets this mod is of real benefit. I was concerned after the reports from Classic 350 owners who had gone from 15 to 16 teeth and found a reduced performance that the Hunter would be similar. But in fact, for the reasons I mentioned, it's of real benefit. I did try riding on level road at 30mph ( 50kph I think ) in 4th gear there was no snatching at all. In fact I tried it in 5th and that was fine too - not that I'd normally do that. As you say, for the minimal cost involved, a change to 16 teeth is well worth trying. Best wishes, Peter

Now then Peter, you have got me proper bamboozled. I have enough trouble remembering which day of the week it is, but an LE video on a Tuesday had me thinking I've finally lost my marbles🤣 But seriously, a very interesting mod and I'm intrigued to know about any change in your fuel consumption. My Hunter's average since new is 112mpg. On previous bikes I have used a straight edge to check the wheel alignment. This is possible with the bike on a rear paddock stand but not when on a centre stand. So on my Hunter I use a laser aligner on the chain run, works a treat. I might polish my bike again this afternoon because the rain has returned👍

It's alright Paul you haven't suddenly lost a couple days out of your life 😂. This is an occasional (very occasional) between Thursdays report. Yes a laser is an excellent idea to check chain alignment. I really ought to be checking fuel consumption but these bikes are so frugal unless I suddenly have to keep refuelling I just 'fuel up and go'. But yes I would anticipate slightly better economy now with the engine running more slowly for the same road speed. Normal service to be resumed this Thursday 😂

I'm enjoying the Hunter more than i thought i would, especially as my last bike was a Triumph Street Triple. How is the speedo calculated. Is it through the front wheel or gearbox as the accuracy could be affected. Also, does the modification make the top speed faster or slower?

Hello Lone Ranger and welcome. Yes I've seen you over on Dave's (MM's) channel. Great you've got a Hunter too now and enjoying it. The speedo seems to driven electronically - I've absolutely no idea how - I'm more familiar with the two methods you mentioned. So MM is the man to ask here I think especially as he's fitting a 16 tooth sprocket later and he has a rev counter already. I don't anticipate any increase in top speed and certainly no decrease as all three RE 350s are electronically governed to about 72 mph maximum and according to one of my subscribers who has had the 16 tooth sprocket on for some time, the Hunter gets to 70 just as quickly. Pleased you enjoy my relaxed style - there are different rides out, generally along quiet roads, released each Thursday. Best wishes and enjoy your lovely Hunter. Peter

Hi Peter, a fascinating video! The gearing now seems to work for you, will watch to see how it works in the longer term! Working with 20bhp (15 or so at the rear wheel) is never going to be easy on faster roads so I wondered if it still reaches 70mph? On mine, on standard gearing, it loses speed on long inclines, mind you I am heavier than you!

Hi Peter, by my reckoning, adding 1 tooth to a small sprocket, 15 to 16 is a big change, around 6 or 7%, but the cost is a lot less than messing around with changing the rear sprocket. Again by my calculation, the rear sprocket has 15 x 2.8, teeth =42 ( my copy of the Hunter manual gives the sprocket ratio of 2.8:1). And 7% of 42 is 3. This means that a 41, 40, and 39-tooth sprocket on the rear wheel would give 3 steps of about 2.3% to get to the 7% change that is achieved by adding 1 tooth to the front sprocket. So, if the 1 tooth change on the front sprocket proves to be too much, there is an alternative, but a lot more expensive option. I suspect the real loss/gain will be hiding in changes to the fuel economy?
@Lanes-Explorer5733
@Lanes-Explorer5733 Ай бұрын
Good evening Alex. Many thanks for those calculations. Yes it's, as you say, an inexpensive change. I think the Hunter was marketed originally for dense city traffic, hence the slightly lower gearing than the Classic 350, meaning less slipping of the clutch in first gear, trickling through traffic. I'd certainly now expect to see slightly improved fuel consumption (It's very economical anyway) as the engine is revving more slowly. A friend (Mercia Moto) will also be making the change and he has a rev counter fitted so that will certainly be an interesting comparison. Thanks taking a look 👍

Hello Andy. Yes that's exactly how I felt with the Meteor I owned before I got the Hunter and before the change to the 16 tooth gearbox sprocket on the Hunter. I think the Meteor would benefit in the same way as the Hunter. It's only the Classic 350 has the 18 inch rear wheel, isn't it, which gives it that edge over the other 350s in terms of higher gearing. Having the higher gearing on the Hunter really does make for a more pleasant feeling ride without it seeming at all over geared and I'm sure you'd find it the same on your Meteor. Hope that helps.
