I'm glad you decided to film this. Because people love to tiptoe around this subject and it's very unhelpful for the group of girls that do not have a "great" experience. Didn't necessarily happen to me, but I have seen this happen to others and you discussed it in a very unproblematic/respectful way!!! xoxo

tea sis yeah they’re called dues. For both fraternities and sororities. At a frat chapter at my uni it’s $500 a semester plus the fees for rushing and pledging. It’s honestly such a huge trade-off and I’d be more inclined to rush (for the networking benefits) if that didn’t happen to be an obstacle beyond my control. It sucks that you already pay all that money for tuition and boarding and then there’s more to pay to gain access to the so-called “college experience”.

I've worked at SDSU since 1999. There are some sororities on campus, that I'll leave nameless, where the members all look like carbon copies and I know what you're talking about when you mention they're looking for a "certain look." It has always made me wonder about diversity within the Greek system.
@jessicajulia8
@jessicajulia8 5 жыл бұрын
Paul Lambert it’s a little surprising that you wonder about diversity. There is an entire council called united sorority and fraternity council (USFC) ALL of the sororities and fraternities are culturally based & founded and/or LGBTQIA based in this council . There’s actually around 20 or even more now -I graduated in 2014. I was a 2 term consecutive president for my multicultural sorority . Monthly fees don’t exceed a gym membership (non house organizations) founded on principles of strengthening diverse communities in their collegiate experiences.....and service, we fundraise for events so that we don’t have to pay out of pocket for most of our events... most of our diverse sororities and fraternities came in the late 80’s through early 2000’s ... point is . THERE ARE DIVERSE SORORITIES AND FRATERNITIES AT SDSU.

This just made me feel so much better. I’m a freshman at the university of oklahoma and I went through rush like two months ago. I had an okay experience but I definitely didn’t keep an open mind because I had one house that I followed on Instagram and I just knew that was the one. Then comes bid day and I was placed into that house and basically I hated it from day one. Now two months later, I’m withdrawing and I’ll have to wait until next fall if I want to rush again. This is such an accurate representation of what rush is like so I’m basically in your situation and I may be rushing again next fall like you but for now, I’m just kinda chilling on the sidelines while the houses I really loved are having fun events with their members and things like that. So anyway, thank you so much for this

I was a Rho Gam my senior year at SDSU and I'm sorry to hear it didn't work out as hoped for you. The system that everyone talks about from my understanding is a computer program that takes the PMNs preferences and each of the sorority preferences and have to run the listings comparing the pmn's to the sorority but also all the sorority preferencing for each girl against the other sororities. It should also be a different experience if you do rush again later because, not only will you be even better prepared, but I'm pretty sure each sorority has a certain number of bids that they have to give out to girls who are sophomores or older so that can be helpful in getting your preferred chapter!

I got a call the morning of saying I didn't get a bid and shouldn't show up and it was so so crushing because I had my heart set on the one and it didn't work out for me. I don't regret going through because I do think that it was a really great experience and I still met a lot of really great people. After taking this last quarter to reflect, I realize that I still really want to have that kind of support system and involvement on campus so I'm trying to go through informal recruitment in the winter.

I rushed sophomore year for the first time & joined a sorority that wasn't "top" at state but I had an open mind and did feel like I belonged there. I was initiated and everything. I honestly really liked the girls in the house BUT the stereotypes, superficiality, putting other houses down, and overall doucheyness of the Greek community at SDSU is so prevalent it was impossible to ignore, so I dropped. I think as a freshman/sophomore you want to find your calling and place where you fit in or feel like you belong and identify with because everything is new and you feel so small on such a big and populated campus and new city for some people and yeah some people find that in Greek Life (good for you) but the majority of kids don't. Not everyone on campus is a Greek, though it may seem like the letters are everywhere and in your face 24/7. There are so many other things to join that will change your life for the better on campus. Branch out, meet new people, experience things that don't sound interesting to you, and you'll fall into place. I can't stress how important it is to start making good connections now as opposed to later. Also don't let other people's opinions change who you are and what you stand for. It's easy to get lost in the storm of emotions and opinions on college campuses. Good luck Macy! :)

Hey! I'm going to SDSU next year and just wondering if you can still have an active social life/party without being in Greek Life? xx
@kkmd0113
@kkmd0113 5 жыл бұрын
Hey girl, I wasn't in Greek life my freshman year but still found it pretty easy to get into frat parties esp. in the beginning of the year. Make frat boy friends while you can. But after rush, don't expect to be able to go back to those parties because they only let in sorority girls they associate with. Only way you get in without being a srat girl is if you are good friends with someone in the frat who can vouch for you to get in, or come get you. (NOT PLEDGES) lol I knew a lot of people who would just hangout together, like a kick back too but as long as you make a lot of friends and ask people about parties, someone is bound to tell you about one. Athlete parties are cool too. There's always a party every day of the week. In summary, yes you can have an active social life and party without being in Greek life, but the parties are waaaay better if you are in Greek life, just bc they have a better budget to make parties fun. Buuttt, if you really don't want to rush don't force yourself to be in a sorority just for parties bc people will see right through you.

hey, I'm a junior at state and I still feel the pressure to join a sorority just because it's always in your face and the sorority girls look like they're living the life, so this made me feel better to see that it's not all like it seems. What are some things you did get involved in tho? Most of my friends are the ones from my floor freshman year and I've struggled to branch out since then. I'd love to feel better and happier here but I'm not sure how.

Hi!! I started to join orgs on campus that went with my major; I'm kinesiology PT so I joined a club called Women in Science Society, Flying Samaritans, Aztec Adaptive Sports, and FPTO. I'm not sure what major you are, but honestly just join whatever sounds fun to you. I'm about to join the sustainability committee in AS just because it sounds interesting. There are also other Greek groups to join that aren't Panhellenic, like the cultural ones or if you're a business major/law major/community service interest. I know there is one called Alpha Phi Omega that a lot of people enjoy being in. It passed already, but checking out the booths they set up on Centennial walkway at the beginning of the school year are also great ways to meet n greet with clubs that might be the one for you! If you like singing, there are a capella groups. I could go on, but SDSU is very diverse and we are so lucky to go here and experience everything it has to offer so don't get stuck with the idea that Greek life is the only place to find your niche on campus.

I just graduated from SDSU May 2018 and the greek life on campus was a bit of a problem. When I got there I debated about joining a frat not because I was looking for brotherhood of camaraderie but because on campus there is some serious elitism surrounding the houses. You can't go to parties, you can't go to certain events, and the frats and sororities look down on anyone not a member of one of the houses. It sucks because it was different before I had gone into the military and was expecting it to be as cool as it use to be.

Girl, I just found your video in my recommended section, and I haven't been able to find a single video similar to my sorority rush experience until this one! Everything seemed to be going really well for me, until the morning of preference day when I my rho gam called and told me that I got heavily released, which meant that I was dropped from all of the houses. I completely agree about being able to tell that some chapters want a specific look. My school is known to have a lot of sororities that want a specific look, and after going through, I think it was at least 80% of the chapters unfortunately. I had multiple houses I liked, I was invited back, each time I enjoyed the conversations. I had some sororities I didn't, but I kept having to go back to, and then suddenly, I was dropped completely. I really want to meet more people, and there were so many girls that I want to be friends with, but now I don't know their names, or any way to contact them. I feel like I been more obsessed with the idea of joining a sorority, since the opportunity of doing so has been taken away from me. Anyway, just rambling now, but I feel you girl!

Yessss this happened to me too. Exact same situation. I dropped the sorority that gave me a bid and joined the sorority I loved my sophomore year. But in all honesty, I had grown a lot since freshman year and sorority life was not everything I had imagined for that year where I wasn't in it. This was a great video - I completely agree that researching all of the sororities beforehand usually just leads to disappointment. I rushed as a sophomore at my school and tried my hardest to put all of my preconceived notions about houses aside. I ended up joining one I had barely even heard up but immediately felt at home at when I walked in. Also, I was a Gamma Chi my senior year and we also were told to discourage PNMs from only putting one house on pref night. The way it was explained to us was that "if the PNM didn't "maximize their options" they weren't guaranteed a bid but if they did rank that second house they knew they would never join, they were" - on the sorority side, each house made a list x number of girls they 100% wanted but also made a "flex list" of the next x number of girls they also clicked with if people from their top list matched to another house. If the PNM didn't "maximize her options" she wasn't eligible for that flex list (there might have been more to this/a reason why....sounds silly now though). So basically, if the PNM puts house A that she really wants and house B that she hates, she's guaranteed to get on A's flex list and probs get a bid there bc the flex lists move fast. Whereas, if she only puts house A & she's not on their top list, that's it. Idk if that's how your system worked - but if so, I thought I could try to explain it a little more. Thanks for sharing this!

so glad I’m not the only one who has a story like this. I rushed last spring and had a similar situation. I go to Chico state and there’s a total of 6 sororities on our campus. After the first day and ranking from favorite to least favorite by keeping a top four and bottom two. I felt like I had such good vibes and bonding with my top four, but apparently it wasn’t mutual. Day two I was dropped by my TOP 4 sororities. Leaving me with my bottom two houses. I had to stick through for philanthropy day, and decided one of the two was better than the first day and the other was still never going to work for me. I had to go to both of them for pref night because it was the automatic default two because of them being the only ones left. By bid day the same thing happened to me. My absolute bottom house is the house I recieved a bid from. I made the decision to not accept my bid, and I still stand by my decision because I would never want to put myself through a bottom house on campus and in my heart where it never clicked or vibed. I’m still questioning if I’m going to rush again spring of 2019, but yeah that’s my story and I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one. sendin good vibes and good luck this semester and I hope if you rush again that it works out! :)

I don't understand the appeal of sororities. I get it's a way to find your "place" but it seems like a lot of stress and potential let down for what is a glorified club. If you want to meet new people and find your home on campus simply talk to the people around you in class, join a club that does not require you to look a certain way or act a certain way.

As a PHC sister from another west coast university, it sounds like they need to bring in another (maybe even 2-3?) chapters to campus. People will always get cut for grades first, then on the selection process itself, but it’s unfair if the system is restricted and takes less than half who go through. As a person who was a Rho Gam twice, I wish they would have explained the difference between Single Intentional Preference (SIP vs. suicide bid sounds less intense) and putting both down to explain you would have just gotten a call not to come and could potentially go through in the Spring, COB, etc. versus being ok with either choice. Maybe you should be a part of a group that asks PHC to bring on another sorority. Our school brought one on and it forced every chapter into taking significantly less girls to accommodate but it sounds like SDSU has the opposite problem. Join another club that interests you/fits your major in the meantime. That’s what I did and stayed friends with them while I was in Greek life too. I went through recruitment as a sophomore so I wish you the best of luck!

Taryn K that’s like at my school there’s only 4 sororities for National Panhellenic Conference and since we don’t have sorority houses only 30ish girls can go into one sorority so that’s about 120ish (give or take a few) but at least 400 girls participate in recruitment.

Rebecca Nieves oh wow, only 4 and that many go through? Other than women getting cut for being messes and/or having bad grades, we set our maximum each chapter can take after we divide a number a little lower than the number signed up which allows most to join a chapter.

I went to SDSU. I tried rushing fraterneties and didnt get bids. I took that as everything happens for a reason. Super happy it didnt happen. I got involved in housing on campus was an RA, worked over summer doing conferences for housing and later was in a co professional business frat. I am telling u that greek life is not whats it cracked up to be and by junior year u will be over it. U turn 21 and frat psrties become so lame.

From someone that has been on the back end of sorority recruitment, it is unfortunate that your Rho Gamma was misinformed and made you feel like you HAD to put both chapters down during your final selections. Putting down only one chapter does not lessen your chances of receiving a bid from that chapter since the system puts the PNMs preference first when bid matching occurs after the final round. If you 100% knew you did not want to join your #2 chapter you actually would have been a good candidate to Single Intentional Preference. That way, in your case you would have just simply not received a bid on bid day, but would have been eligible to go through Informal Recruitment on your campus this year rather than having to wait a full year to go through formal recruitment again. So sorry this happened to you, I hope your Panhellenic Council in the future can educate Rho Gamma's better to avoid putting PNMs in situations that you experienced. There are SO MANY myths about the "system" that controls Panhellenic Recruitment that I wish people were more transparent with PNMs about how it actually works to better set expectations. Also, your school DEFINITELY needs to add more chapters if that many women are going through recruitment. That would help a lot more women be happy at the end of the process too. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I'm at a school that has 24 sorority chapters. I thought for sure I would get my #1 choice but I didn't...I got my #2 and I cried so hard but of course, everyone thinks it's tears of joy. I walked away absolutely numb. My Rho came up and gave me a huge hug and was so excited because she was hoping I landed in her house. Oh great, I felt awkward but I blurted out "this isn't my first choice I wanted to be a DG." She kept hugging me anyways. And said, "you feel like this now, but trust your Sisters...we know you're a perfect fit for ChiO...give us a chance, we know and WANT you." Best advice ever...go with the house that WANTS you, because your SISTERS only want what's best from them and the chapter. I loved my 2nd choice and would've regretted if I got my 1st choice. Things work out for the best, embrace the house that WANTS you.

I lived with 6 SDSU sorority girls that were dropped from 3 different sororities. I can't remember which ones but my God that house was full of drama. Very superficial judgmental including towards each other. I spent a semester with my face in my palm and head to the side like a confused dog. I'm so happy everyone has graduated and the real world is consuming the educated mind. For educated women, talk about small minds. I enjoy being a judge free person and understanding I can't comprend the world being single minded. And still love them all. They crack me up.

Being in a sorority, this is perfectly well said. What happens is the greek community will use a website (or even an app) and basically the website does all the calculations between the potential new members and the sorority girls themselves. They rank you just like you rank them. Have regular natural conversations while standing out! If there is a fun fact about yourself, try and slide it in the conversation because it will be easier for them to remember you! I had this happen to me too where I had my top choice and then my bottom choice on the last day. Trust your gut because *most of the time* it is right. Usually when a sorority keeps on calling you back, they see something in you that you do not, so definitely take it as a compliment even if you don't get the bid you want. It's extremely okay to not take a bid or drop in the process because joining a sorority just to get letters is just ridiculous to me and as we always say you want to find your home.

You should try checking out a multicultural sorority, there are about 9 of them and the rushing process is quite different. Just a suggestion, doesn’t hurt to check it out. I know they’re tabling at SDSU all this week, on the side of the library (closest to the bookstore).

After doing the Panhellenic rushing/pledging process and then dropping, I wish I would have done a multicultural sorority like hers instead. Honestly I feel like “sisterhood” is bullshit in Panhellenic sororities but in multicultural sororities they REALLY mean it and I love that, so definitely check them out!

i shit you not, i starved myself for a month before freshman year to match the Alpha Phi look. Ever notice all the girls look the same, at least on the photos they post online? Super skinny, blonde, tan.... this is a really negative comment, I know, but jeeze, the pressure is real. Decided not to rush because of the absurd prices (which weren't much different from the room + board prices, for some reason).

hey! I'm from Spain but I'm in college at the US and I applied to SDSU, I visited the university and I loved it. But I got so many people telling me that I wouldn't like the environment at the school because everything is very focused on sororities. Since I'm from Spain and we don't have this (I just know about it from movies) I would like to know like why does it exist? And why do people prefer living with a sorority instead of renting an apartment with other students etc. I am not hating on anything I just want to understand more about it since it is not very familiar to me. 😉👍🏽

Stella Sepassipour Hi! Maybe i can help you. I recently got into SDSU, and although it’s not my #1 school, I’m going to visit for Open House. Yes, SDSU has a large Greek Life community. For myself, I don’t plan on rushing if I go to SDSU. Don’t let Greek Life deter you from going to the school! You’re there to learn, and grow as a person. And although it can be a great experience, school comes first!
@NerdChanYT

Stella Sepassipour Sororities and Fraternitys come from schools like Harvard, where Fraternities were originally male-educated groups. The were “academic” groups where grades, and education was the priority, not partying. Greek life is a way to connect with people and make friends. Another reason is to “make connections in your major” and when you graduate, you have connections with people in your field. But in reality, it’s a way for people to make friends and be apart of something special while your in University.
