I've been in Santorini and agree with every thing you said. We were on a cruise ship so we only got to spend the day there, but we hired a car and driver who took us on a pretty extensive tour, including all the way from the lighthouse to Oia. As a American, I can't wait to get back and spend a week or so there. Maybe we'll see you next year.

I think Fira (Thera) is the best place to stay, hands down. Walking distance of bars, restaurants, fast food (who doesn't want McDonald's as an option). Walking distance of the main port. More central if you want to visit all the other spots in the car / quad and has the main bus station if you want to go on the bus. Views are fantastic all along the coast from Fira to Imerovigli to Oia. Oia has the killer sunset, but gets ridiculously busy at that time (at least in 'normal' times). But Fira on my next visit!
