Here's a little "Behind the Scenes" on my writing process, as I develop my next film! Within this video, I'll step through how I use "My Board."
Topics covered:
- Breaking up your board; Act 1, Act II a, Act II b, Act III
- How many pages of script are to be written for each Act
- How to use index cards (and other markers) on board
- Structure of the index cards
- The FIRST FEW THINGS on my board; title, one sheet, tagline, etc.
- Rules for the film
- How I made my board
- Overcoming writer's block

I was thinking today I need to get myself a board to help me get serious about working my next script. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Did you get your board set up?

Hello Holt! Yes I did 🙂 thanks for asking. I even put in the Blake Snyder beat tags too. I’m not at the point where I can start plotting out my story yet, but I have the board set up with a few scenes for a story I’ve got churning in my head. Right now I’m at the point where I have a couple of story kernels that are competing for my attention and I need to go through the idea and brainstorming process. I’m trying to distill the different story ideas into subject lines (Syd Field) so that they are clear and I can move forward with breaking them down into acts. Any recommendations or insight into your own process will be awesome.

Also I noticed you work a lot with some indigenous folks in the mid west. Wanted to share something I produced recently for whatever it’s worth. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bL5xisSblda3fqM.html

@@ricardomiranda7737 I would definitely separate those two story lines, unless you can wrap them into one story. But if not, put one on the shelf while you 'beat out' the one. Then jump and do the other one. It helps me to know that I'm not picking one or the other, but that I'm tending to one, then the other, if both stories are resonating with me. Just like having two kids. Each needs their space and time with you. :) Hope this helps.

Holt Hamilton Films totally agree. In my head I can only work out one story at a time. I also found the plot embryo by Dan Harmon and this is really resonating with me as well.

You are welcome. Do you use the board?

No, I mainly just work from an outline. But I believe the "Board" is going to greatly increase my efficiency.

This was useful. I might do it on the computer, but I am thinking having it on a board might be visually good too :)

I need the physical/analog cards. It feels good when you can wrip one apart and throw it on the ground. Or get a big fat sharpie out and scribble a few words on a new card, then throw it with a magnet onto the board. I also like being able to glance and see numerous cards at once and still be able to read them. To each their own. I vote for tangible ones! Let us know what you end up doing.

I use sticky note cards and my wall. Some people use different colored notecards. I keep it simple. He bought the sheet the metal at Home Depot. He bought magnets and tape.

Having something magnetic could help you have more "chronogical control" (when you decide to change the scenes' order for more impact or whatever the reason) whereas glue can deteriorate

I have been working on my feature script for about 8 months pretty hard and I feel I need to have something like the board you are using to help me hit on certain plot points at the 12min, page 25, 50 and so on. Because right now, certain things are not landing where they should. I have the 3 act structure but just not hitting those pages where things need to happen. Will this helps me to move the scenes around?
@HoltHamiltonFilms

Ideally for me, this helps move scenes around quickly, prior to the writing stage. I like to be able to visually see the movie in some cards and work through it quite fast and change scenes around at this stage. I'll keep the board up for a first, maybe second draft of script. So yes, to answer your question. Keep going, you got this!

Where did you buy your board?

Home Depot. Anything metalic will do that allows a magnet to cling to it. Other good options are cork boards with push pins. Even sticky notes can work.
