Forgotten Trinkets

6 жыл бұрын

For those who are interested in this kind of video, here’s a look at my current sewing pattern collection, some of the more ridiculous patterns I have, and how I store them. This is more of a talky video, mostly me being an awkward human being, no real educational value I’m afraid.
But hopefully maybe some entertainment value… even if it’s only cringe humor
I really hope that it’s not
Sometimes I watch other people’s KZfaq videos and I’m just baffled at how comfortable they seem, how naturally they speak in front of the camera (or voiceover) I understand it’s the sort of thing that comes with practice, or at least I hope, but it’s difficult to imagine them ever tripping over their words or speaking in a stilted manner. It’s so easy to see other people, sewers, artists, youtubers & such, and assume they have always been that adept. Especially when you only see the final result, and have no idea of the process it took to achieve it.
Rationally I understand that everyone starts out somewhere, and most people kinda suck when they start out. Progress comes with experience, and it’s not always linear.
But emotionally it can feel like I’m surrounded by people who are infinitely and inherently more skilled than I can ever hope to be. That no matter how hard I try to make progress I will always be behind.
Kind of a bummer
...Anyways, you can find more information about the projects I pictured on my blog:

Also, FYI I didn't buy them all at once. I picked up like 2 or 3 at a time over the course of years...I don't know if that makes things any better ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Edit:
In regards to COPPA and the FTC,
While I’ve worked hard to make my content accessible and enjoyable to a broad audience, my content is not intended for young children. I regularly use potentially hazardous tools to create art including open flames, heavy gauge wire, sharp pins & sewing needles, razor blades, as well as a sewing machine & serger. These are tools no child should be using unsupervised, and by extension, children should not be watching these videos without supervision. I’m so happy when parents tell me my videos inspired them to create art with their kids. I think arts and crafts are a wonderful way to connect people of all ages, but not all arts and crafts are appropriate for young children, and should not be attempted without attentive supervision and guidance.
My videos are not intended for children. To those that would suggest that anything relating to fantasy, magic, fairies, and angels must be created for children, I’d point out the existence of shows like Carnival Row, Game of Thrones, Lost Girl, True Blood(Spoiler: series contains fairies), Good Omens, Lucifer, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and many more, are compelling evidence to the contrary.
Additionally, according to KZfaq analytics less than 5% of my audience falls in the 13-17 age range (the youngest age group KZfaq analytics provides data on) and the vast majority of my audience is over 20.
Also, a little update on me: I have been going through one of the worst periods of depression I’ve experienced in quite some time. I’ve barely been able to get out of bed for the past 3 months. My mental health has all but abandoned me, my physical health is suffering, and I don’t have the means or access to seek professional help. This has contributed to the lack of updates on all of my social media platforms. However, these developments with KZfaq, COPPA, and the FTC, have been less than encouraging and this very well could mean the end of my channel.
To anyone who’s enjoyed watching my videos, thank you. It’s nice to know I’ve brought people a bit of happiness.
Thank you for all of the kind and supportive comments! I hope you continue to find inspiration and happiness through creativity and art

Thank you! All I can think about is how much fabric is going to waste making something with a bunch of panels, like a 6 panel corset, that's like 15 inches if you include the lining.

Oh girl, I enjoy your video and your personality. I just went through a 4 draw filing cabinet and got rid of probably 45 years of pattern. For one thing, they don't fit any more and a lot of them I wore in high school. (Didn't know they would all come back into fashion) I still have too many left and I'm like you 99 cents for a pattern is to hard to resist!

Why do you have 12 👎🏽? You are so sweet and I liked your video. Glad to see you make your own patterns; I do too. I do not buy ANY patterns, in fact. No stores near me with $.99 patterns and I don't purchase them online. A lot of people have tons of them. I went to design school and have books with every imaginable style to draft a pattern that fits me perfectly when I sew it up. Keep sewing! Stay as sweet as you are. Greetings! Jane

I totaly agree with you about the archaic imperial measuring system you have in USA. I live in Australia and we have had the metric system for a long time. I often have to convert inches to centimeters when using sewing patterns. I have heaps more sewing patterns than you - about 7 boxes infact. LOL I have to stop collecting sewing patterns.

1. I keep hearing from folks that my collection isn't that big. Which, let me tell ya, makes it REALLY tempting to go nuts whenever I notice there's a pattern sale going on. 2. I'm glad someone thinks so :D people rarely laugh at my jokes irl

99 cents? Most of mine were around 3-6 dollars since I buy online. I never thought about going to a craft store for them, since I don't like leaving my house to go shopping. But now that I know about this, I'll probably check for upcoming sales at a local store. I'm always cheap to buy these, but seeing how large everyone's pattern collection is making me envious for more.

In the past couple of months, I've noticed simplicity patterns going on sale for $1.99 instead of $.99. I'm quite the homebody too, so I guess its a matter of weighing the comfort and convenience of staying home vs the savings. Either way, I recommend always checking out their weekly ad first to know which brands are on sale when.

Hahaha! I was expecting way more, the way you were shaming yourself. Oh No! My pattern collection is massive. If I only count my McCall's, Butterick, Vogue & Simplicity, I have around 150 patterns (I have used 22 of them, in whole or in part. I have another 12 traced out.) Then there are my PDF patterns (99% of which were free) and the sewing books with patterns. Yeah...my collection has kind of just exploded. But honestly, when Jo-Ann's or Hobby Lobby have a sale that good, it would be rude not to buy one...or ten. That heating pad with the lacing is genius! And I would gladly learn and use centimeters if everyone else would use Fahrenheit, because what the fuck is up with you, Celcius? Like, what even? You make hot weather sound cold and cold weather sound like hell has frozen over and we're all dead!

It's so hard to tell what's normal (or abnormal for that matter) from a sample size of one, but now that I've heard from more sewers I feel significantly less guilty about my stash :) in fact I'm kinda regretting not getting more while I still could, before they went out of print...I have the feeling this could turn into a habit ;)

I started a binder but I'm not happy. They binder I got is 6 inch binder and it is massive. Takes up a lot of space and it's hard to flip through the pages to look at each pattern. Not sure what to do. :(

I think everyone finds their own method for organizing patterns. My collection has grown a little bit since I made this video, and I've split things between two binders one for "normal" clothes, and one for more costumey patterns. What works for me won't work for everyone. Boxes are quite popular, but I never went for them, because I like to see the pictures on the front, but you may have different priorities. There are plenty of other storage ideas online. I hope that you find (or create) something that works for you :)
