My sister, Robin, was visiting this week from Alabama and she was kind enough to sit down in front of the mic with me to answer your questions about family, food, and frugality.
We hope you'll be inspired by her personal story of tenacity in the face of hard economic circumstances. She learned to budget and save for great, big goals - even though as a salesman her husband brought home an inconsistent income.
She also fought back against rising blood pressure and the pain of arthritis to take back control of her health and change her eating habits, achieving impressive weight loss and muscle gain even though she was in her mid 50s.

My sister and I also shared a bed up until I got married at 21 and she was 23. She mostly stayed home with our parents up until 24 when she passed away from cancer in 2013. She did leave for 2 years on her own but came home when she became sick. She was really good with her money and knew how to manage it.

I'm really sorry for your loss. Losing a sibling would be a hard thing to bear. I actually liked sharing a bed. We grew up in a house that was over 100 years old and those bedrooms were cold in the winter. Having another person to keep your feet warm was a real plus.

Being fifty i regret not being a better mom. I was usually a single mom so I was mom and dad. Most time more like a dad. So I apologized to them that I was a old fashion mama and hard. But they said I was fine I took care of them and worked hard to provide for them. Without help. From thier dads or state. And now I'm proud to say I'm 100% debt free including house. With a fat saving .all by myself. #singlemomscanliveyourdreams. Xoxo

My sister and I have decided to start taking annual vacations, her, me, and the five kids still at home. We split the cost of a condo and the gasoline in half, we pack all of.the food and drinks, and since we still have young children, we make the activities child-friendly. Splitting the condo, gasoline, and groceries in half saves A LOT of money for each household, which means ultimately more vacations. Travel experiences are important to me, and this makes the costs more manageable.

I think you should definitely make more of these! There are a lot of parents out there who need information on how to raise kids in this consumer crazy world! For your next one: how do you deal with the constant pressure to buy stuff at school? The kids I used to nanny for had spring and winter pictures they tried to get the parents to buy also. Yes, the book drives with the schools is crazy. We used our library a lot with my kids. Even with myself normally unless it's a cookbook I ONLY read a book once so why buy it when you can borrow it.

This is an interesting conversation , thanks for sharing it. I grew up in a blue-collar working-class household. True my parents didn't have much money but there are things I learned from them. For example. My dad did the grocery shopping, he made friends with the manager at our local grocery store, and found out that they mark down the meat every Saturday morning Oma so he would get up early and get the freshly marked down meat to put it in our freezer. He grew up poor and I think you just wanted to make sure that we had something put back. He turned the hall coat closet into a pantry and filled it with bargain and sale canned goods. This is something I still do to this day.

True indeed about the life insurance. That's why I had term life insurance instead but it ends when I turned 75. So I decided to go do a cash policy especially after I found out cremation was $3000 so with $10,000 the whole thing is covered. Now if you have a family with kids or something you will need much more. Be blessed budgeting family

Just watched your no waste food prep, I try not to waste but some peels and other bits and pieces don't get used so I have an old pot that I cook allthe scaps up in and the feed to our chooks, this makes hard peals easier for them to eat and helps with the cost of feeding them. We can't let them forage as we have a real problem with foxes. We use to have ducks as well. The chooks keepus in eggs most of the year and we have enough to share with family neighbour's and friends.

One of the best 'vouchers' Robin could give Hope for Yule or her BD would be a gardening certificate. Robin could 'vacation' at Hope's house in the spring, stake out a garden, plant some seeds, and explain to Hope how to grow. Look up the Ruth Stout method of no-dig gardening and go for it.

We were in the Smokey Mountains and thought about heading down to Biltmore. Not enough time. But, that gives us incentive to make another trip.

I love your KZfaq name! It doesn't take too many days before you feel so much better. I was constantly bloated from eating dairy. I didn't realize the connection until I gave it up.

When I was growing up my parents never discussed finances. But when I did get old enough to understand money and everything, my parents made sure I understand saving and budgeting. I'm thankful for that. I have a family friend who's kids ask me if I need something when I say I'm thinking about getting something. Right now I'm going through stuff in my garage and they are helping and it's making it easier getting rid of things. I went deep sea fishing once and never again. I was so sick the whole trip. I save for things and will cut to save for something

Eating vegan has become so normal to us, though. We had a conversation when Robin was here about the last time we ate a hotdog. It's been so long that I honestly, don't remember the texture of a traditional hotdog. I remember the heartburn though. LOL!

I live 30 minutes from Paducah, KY. There's plenty of shops and restaurants to check out. There's a quilt museum, a nice park called Noble Park, a river to walk along, with a mural wall. There's Kentucky Oaks Mall, a Books of Million, thrift and consignment stores, Goodwill, Dollar Tree, an Aldi, and a Cheddar's restaurant is being built. I think you two ladies would have a great time in Paducah!

Thank you for this nice video! It's neat to see how you inspire one another and me. I think I'm going to look up some recipes and give them a try. The older I get, the less meat I desire. I'm not sure what happened, but little by little I'm less interested in meat. Also, my son moved to Tuscaloosa last fall for college and it is a 24 1/2 hour drive from my home in MInot, ND. (too far for a mom). I hope you did meet in the middle and vacation. My sister lives in my home town of Minneapolis, and her daughter lives near Tampa. We have decided that we will both fly to our kids Easter weekend, and drive towards each other along the Florida panhandle for easter weekend get together. It's definitely something we have had to budget for, but I hope we can find less expensive ways to do this over the years, while my son is in college. I really like the idea of this tradition and hope we can do it the next few years. Thanks again for another wonderful, encouraging, and inspiring video.

Great video. I enjoyed seeing your sister with you. I always wanted a sister. I didn't yell or scream raising my boys. I really enjoyed their childhood. I did stress some not always knowing how I would have the money needed for everything. We somehow made it. We only had two boys, but the first 16 years was less than $20,000. The military didn't pay squat back then. My husband got out and used his GI Bill to go to college. We didn't get welfare or foodstamps. It was tough, but we made it.

Thank you to your husband for his service. It's an awful shame that our military men aren't paid more than they are.
@sstephens2175
@sstephens2175 3 жыл бұрын
@@UndertheMedian Thank you. Thankfully they do pay better now, but they are sent into danger zones far more often as well. Back then they paid so little that my friends that were E-5 and below with kids were eligible for foodstamps. I had friends who got them. The health insurance for the military is far better than it was back then as well. You couldn't go out in town unless the military sent you. If you did you paid out of pocket. You had to get on a long waiting list to see a specialist on base. I was on a list for a year and a half once. The clinics were all walk in with no appointments. Then you were triaged. You could wait for hours to be seen. Thankfully they changed from Champus to Tricare, and it was finally more like civilian medical care. Your housing allowance was so little you could only afford a very nasty cheap apartment, or shoddy mobile home. The military housing list was so long that you could wait a year to two years to get a house, by that time you may be stationed somewhere else. We waited once for a year and a half. It was worth the wait, because your quality of living was so much better. Now their housing allowance pays enough that a lot of military (even the lower ranks) buy a house. They didn't even do direct deposit. You would get a hard check and go on base to stand in line at the check cashing window. Times sure have changed.
