This is the confused emotional journey of an innocent abroad. Kat, Chloe’s sister came over to join them and they started filming her on her first day. Over three months she goes through a lot of drink, a lot of business cards and a lot of soul searching. At the end of the film she has to face a momentous personal decision.
In a very strange world where hostesses are a special kind of modern-day geisha, it gets to the heart of what drives men and how feelings can transcend a commercial transaction.

Why do people think that 'Geisha' means prostitute?? It actually means 'artisan' and it takes YEARS of hard work to get the skills needed (in the arts as well as politics) to graduate as a Geisha. I didn't realise this documentary was about hostesses. I won't be watching the rest of it.

@@user-sp3yu1ft6y geisha are artists now and were in the Edo period. The first geisha were men, related or the Noh theatre and culture. In its entire history the working uniform of a geisha has never changed: a kimono with a 15 foot obi that’s in the *back*. This elaborate and extremely expensive garment requires a male dresser to don. The prostitutes wore kimonos that tied in the front for obvious reasons.

Christia Elegido A lot of westerners have this romanticised idea about what a Geisha is. Geisha were nothing more than just entertainers for the merchants, people of higher status wouldn't have Geisha. Hostess do the same thing. The thing with this documentary is that they are showing the easy kind of hostess. Foreigners are not able to be the kind of hostess which are expensive, the hostess jobs for foreigners are just a type of bar girl. Hostess have to be very good at conversations, many have to study a lot of books about science and medicine so they keep up with conversations with their customers who are doctors, etc. These are the high end hostess and are extremely similar to what Geisha did, the concept is the same.
@yasashii89
@yasashii89 6 жыл бұрын
Jayjen35, well yes, but the point is that men don't go to a nurse or lawyer or whatever with such ideas in mind. People socialise with Geisha and hostess with such ideas in the back of their mind, that's why it's a lot more common for men to try with such arrangements.

MAAAN geisha is an artist not hostess! 芸者 : 芸 as gei in 芸術 Geijutsu means art, and 者 sha; mono, means person. Geisha means someone who do art things, which means artist! They perform art in front of their guests. And I dont think Geishas allowed to meet with the guests outside their home. So don't be rude! In Geisha world there's someone who called 旦那 Danna who act as someone like a husband to Geishas thus the Geishas must treat them AND ONLY THEM as a husband, but doesn't mean the Geishas have to give their body to their Danna. AND there are still modern living Geishas right now so don't classify these people as Geisha =_= Sorry got fired up because the title is just...no /I'm not a weeb pls/ And who in their right mind flew to another country just to be a hostess? 😢

If you are in the Ronppongi district of Tokyo looking for work as a hostess that’s just a front. Ronppongi is a super shady area, more shady than the red light district. If they were actually being hostesses they are trying to portray themselves as they would be in the Ginza area or anywhere but Ronppongi. Her bragging about getting 10,000 yen is not that much it’s about $89 US. True Geshias are NOT going to be in Ronppongi.

I had a girlfriend who worked as a host. It made me really uncomfortable, but I wasn't able to really describe what was wrong with it. I couldn't understand why it was significantly different from a waiter who puts on the charm to earn a better tip. This video helps explain some of the issue. To (crudely) summarize, it seems like hostesses are selling emotional intimacy, like the emotional version of prostitution. That seems to disrespect both the hostess and the customer, since you're selling your personality which treats you as a commodity instead a person deserving respect. ... hmm, still not sure if I'm just uncomfortable because of my Western bias.

I worked as a hostess in Tokyo back in 2003. I had the best time ever! Met really interesting people and saved loads of money. Mind you, back then I was all into drinking and partying, so I was in a right place, no way I could do it now.

Hostessing not geisha There is a large aspect to this documentary that the filmmaker completely misses. Japanese society particularly for salary men is exceptionally formal. But getting drunk is socially seen as a pass...they can relax. In the company of foreign women the rules are even more relaxed. It's like taking a mini holiday from the pressure of Japanese norms. In addition many men hold business meetings with other men at hostess bars in fact many deals would not get signed or business issues not talked about unless both people aren't loosed up first.

Wonder what year this is from. Work in Japan really is different now, they dont like hiring western girls. I feel like this Kate girl is being facetious, hostess work is classified as shady and most hostesses have dugar daddies from their clientelle

I live in Japan and can only say everyone experiences with working as a hostess is different from the next. In Tokyo, they do hire Westerners but they do have a type: Blonde hair, blue eyes females are preferred over a brown/burnett haired women but it depends on the bar/clubs. Most bars/clubs in Japan are owned by Japanese mafia.

I was hoping someone currently living in Japan would comment on this, because I was curious if the hostess thing is still as common now as it was in the late 90's/early 2000's. I'm Greek, (like Kat and her sister), and I think if I were looking to go somewhere to make money off my appearance and charm, Japan would be the last place I'd go. It's pretty well known that in those hostessing clubs they prefer blondes/blue eyes.

Real stories i am going to show this documentary to some very influential person in Japan in the Geisha community and you are going to hear from their lawyers. Do not underestimate this comment, i am extremely well connected in the Karyukai and those ladies are extremely well connected with the most powerful men in Japan , so you are really going to regret this title .

Geisha and hostess' are completely different, honestly... Host and Hostess clubs are not Okiya and they are not traditional tea houses where the geisha and maiko would entertain. Hostess' do not train for years since childhood in multiple arts like dance and music, they do not spend thousands upon thousands on one kimoni or have their hairstyles tightly done for months. They do not have their mizuage as Meiko did for their coming of age. Hostess' just serve drinks and talk, helping people feel less lonely and helping people have fun. Maybe I'm being too critical, but geisha have always fascinated me and saying "hostess" is the same thing isn't exactly right. : \

HangulHeroine, Hello. I totally agree with you. You explained it perfectly ! Hostess' are different than geisha's. Like you said Geisha's train since childhood in tea houses through arts,music and dance serving powerful men in fancy settings wearing old kimono's. But Hostess' are basically escort's for men. Taking them out for a date where they share a drink with a lonely wealthy man. Calling Hostess' Geisha is an insult to the centuries old tradition of the Geisha I feel. All the best !

So, I am stunned of how many ppl are pointing out of how wrong this video is titled and many got offended by it YET the title is still not changed!! Common, Geishas are an important part of the Japanese history and culture and by calling call girls “ Geshas “ you are offending the Japanese ppl. Please do the right thing and change your title.

But again I'm sorry to hear the news that someone she knew got killed. Japan's red light district may look kind of harmless but, you know, every shady place have its own rules and there is crime especially on someone who came from outside place like these girls. Shady place is where shady people gather.

So strange how there’s even some sort of culture in such a dark environment. (The men have to go to dinner with the women, then bring them to the club, etc.) There’s certain rules, even to such shady dealings. Gotta love japan... always making things seem more appropriate.

As everyone has said, this isn't geisha. It's the paid "girlfriend experience" form of escorting/prostitution. There's no art, no tradition, no cultural aspect, just a way for guys who can't get real dates to feel less lonesome. I guess it's all right for cheap girls who want to work their way around Japan and don't mind being groped and propositioned by customers. It reminds me of Hooters or Playboy clubs. They resemble geisha as much as they resemble Queen Elizabeth.
