What is Beer in Beautiful Places?
Hi, I’m Maddie! Celebrating an outdoor adventure with a beer has been a long-time tradition for me, and I wanted to create a platform for like-minded folks to come together. In my videos, I cover all types of adventures and review beer! Topics include day hiking, kayaking, travel, thru-hiking, and life on the road. In short, if you would describe yourself as an outdoorist, outdoorsman, outdoorswoman, hiker trash, nomad, or dirtbag, come on along, this is the channel for you! Welcome and cheers!

I’m guessing your long gone from the AT. but yes summiting with friends sounds like the right thing to do. Taylor just restarted her hike and in the end she decided to go summit as well and flip flop the way back. You two ladies are awesome. Maddie your videos have been the best and when all is said and done. I’m going to rewatch them all. Such a great experience and I’ve so have loved your attitude.. it’s just life and I so have appreciated watching your experience so much. Thank you❤❤

Hey Mattie! Long story short, my name is Bruce Higgason. Your cousin, Ben Zickel is married to my stepdaughter,Rachel. I met your dad a couple weeks ago at Ben’s son, Sam’s birthday party. He told me and my wife, Terri, of your adventure hiking the AT. We started that night watching your KZfaq channel, beginning at day 1. I cannot say how impressed we are at how well you have documented your experience and the maturity and downright badass way you have tackled such a monumental task. We are currently only on day 70 of your trek but I wanted to jump ahead a drop you a message of encouragement to let you know that we are thinking of you and your safe passage the remainder of of journey and to the top of Katahdin, and pray you will complete all it safely. We look forward to watching the remaining videos and your completing your journey and look especially toward meeting you when you return to Louisville. God speed and be safe.

Another tough decision and I think you will be happy with it. You will be reunited with Pac Man, etc. and the community experience will be yours no matter how or when it happens. I think the decision to get there and then pick up the remaining miles will take a lot of pressure off of you, too. You will still have accomplished a great thing and with those who have mattered to you for months. Hang in there. You are on the right journey. So excited for you!

Hey Maddie! Don't be discouraged by skipping ahead part of the trail. What you've accomplished already is quite remarkable...you should always be proud of yourself! I'm not sure what the weather is like in Maine right now, but if you don't have sufficient warm clothing, then jumping ahead is a wise move. Being cold will certainly make you miserable, and not help you go any faster. I'll bet if you had been able to talk to your folks, they would have given you similar advice. Better safe, than sorry. I'm really enjoying the Maine scenery! That looks so nice. Thanks again, for taking us with you! Well, be safe, and ENJOY!

All I have to say is I am going to be so sad for myself when y’all are done - I have enjoyed your videos so so much. Here is my advice - do what you want. This is likely one of the few times you will be able to do this. Hike slow, hike fast, hike all night, take a zero - it is your hike. Period! Y’all are doing great! Oh and P.S. I think when you are tired at night - you and I are the same person 😂 - I get it girl!

Opted out after 233.7 miles at Rt. 17. But I'm going back sfter getting my head straight. My average was 5 miles a day. Now I realize I don't care how long it takes. Too many people who can only talk about pack weight or mileage aren't there for the experience.

Gee whiz, Maddie! Legs of steel and the willpower to match them! I am in awe. Your self-discipline is so admirable. Don't be discouraged! Almost there! Flip-flopping is a wise decision, I think. And safer in the end. I don't think you can beat the snow unless you do. The snow should be coming soon, right around mid-October, if I remember. My bedroom window at college looked right out over Franconia NOtch and right at Lafayette. So I remember waking up to snow halfway down Lafayette about mid or late October! If it's snowing in the Notch, then it will be snowing at Katadhin too. So flip-flopping may just keep you a little warmer for a little longer! Today is 10/12. So I worry. You are racing snow now. And doesn't Katadhin close soon? So beat the closure and the snow and hike the Jump after that. I agree. Good strategy and it's all about strategy, isn't it? Hugs! Onward and upward, Noble Heroine!

Your jumping ahead to summit with your tramily isn't a bad idea. Like you said. Part of the experience is the people who you met and the friendships that you make. Some will by for a life time. You also said that you can always hike those skipped miles. You two are doing great. It should always be the experience/journey. As it's been said many times. HYOH. May God continue to bless you on your journey.

So glad that "flip-flopping" is in your plan. Others have done the same in 23. I've enjoyed your trail adventures up to now. If you do K now and sobo, you have some pretty good climbs with great views--Moxie Bald, the Bigalows, Crockers, Sugarloaf, Saddlebacks and you'll have more time to complete your throughhike. Best wishes to you and Smoke!!

Love the channel and the videos that you are doing. I’ve never hiked the AT and find it really interesting and awesome that you’re braving it. The one thing I can say is don’t give into the fear mongering, for example the through hikers saying that a weather system was coming in. That’s probably what is killing the distance for you and Smoke.

Watching Maddie AT videos reminds me of Dorothy walking the yellow brick road to the wizard of Katahdin. Maddie needs to click her heels 3 times on top of Katahdin to send herself home. Smoke is the tin man because he is all heart. On the other hand, Smoke has hair that looks like a lion's mane. Wicked witch is constant challenges to overcome and keep on hiking. Maddie is wise to study film production as this AT video sequence shows effective communication related to AT hiking plus a natural talent for film creation. Symptom of video script planning is when Smoke hikes ahead with camera giving views Maddie could not get on her own. I heard state of Pennsylvania can have poor or seldom drinking water sources in the summer. Wish Maddie had identified longest distances between drinking water sources in Pennsylvania with sequential AT mile markers as some water sources go dry. This indicates where I need to carry more water during summer heat when I need more drinking water. This factual summer drinking water source availability has high value for me.

Thank you! I’m so glad you noticed I study film making! As for water sources in Pennsylvania, I didn’t think that would be interesting to most people so I didn’t film it, but have you heard of Far Out? It’s an app with a map where water sources (among other things!) are shown and other hikers can comment if a source is flowing or dry
