I friend that is a life coach suggested that with my passion for public service and my interest in law that I should consider being a victim advocate. Just applied for this position at a local PD and this video is a big help! I really loved being a mental health case manager and this job seems like it has a lot of crossover. Let me ask you this, did victims ever meet with you in your office/workspace? That was my issue in my last job; having 10-12 in-person appointments with clients a day became draining as I'm an introvert and I need time to recharge. Thanks so much for the info!

what would you say are the biggest differences between victim advocacy and attorneys? I know there are some obvious differences, I am torn between these two paths and I would love any and all advice!
@DaytoDaySocialWork4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Lydia, thanks for watching! In my experience, victim advocates were not allowed to speak at all; I worked at a police dept. but the ones that work in the solicitor's office may have had a different set of rules. I was there solely for support and only spoke if the judge asked me a question which was pretty much never! Victim advocates also provide resources and go onto the scene, if called to do so, of deaths/homicides/car accidents/etc. Attorneys may do some of those things like providing resources but, of course, it is not their job. Victim advocates do no represent the client, we are there to make sure that they know their rights (victim's bill of rights) and also assist the client with applying for funding from the state. The funds are given to victims to pay for hospital bills, funerals, counseling due to traumatic events, etc. Two totally different worlds! Let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help!

Thanks for watching! It can be very interesting. I don't like being on call, I forgot to mention that in the video. Other than that, at my department, it's pretty laid back and not too stressful most of the time.
@DaytoDaySocialWork8 жыл бұрын
+Mayaa30 no, not one day out of the week! I wish it was that way! we get one full week out of the month and we're on call 24 hours each day for that week.
@DaytoDaySocialWork8 жыл бұрын
+Mayaa30 and I'm never there at night. If I'm on call and something happens at night then I would have to go to the station, the crime scene, or the hospital.
@DaytoDaySocialWork8 жыл бұрын
It doesn't happen often for me. It really depends on where you work and the crime rate and the way your department feels about certain crimes. I get called out for fatalities like car wrecks or maybe homicides when we have them depending on the situation. It's all situational. My partner has been called out for a man that was hit by a car and died, she went to be with the wife. Other advocates have been called for homicides or child deaths. Sometimes, people are killed and we don't get called. Depends on the department.

Hi, thanks for watching! This video is a few years old so I'm not in that position anymore but when I was, I did not get burned out at all! I loved being a victim advocate in the law enforcement field. I have been burnt out as a social worker in general but it was manageable with self care and hasn't happened often.

Thanks for the video. My dream would be to start a non profit victim advocacy organization. I have the money but zero education. I participate in a lot of certification programs but never got my certification due to my lack of education but I'm in school now. The only thing I don't want to happen to me is to become burned out or jaded by the people I'll meet. How do you keep your passion for the people you serve?
@DaytoDaySocialWork6 жыл бұрын
Maat11 yes, you certainly can become burned out very quickly! You just have to have a passion for it. If you're starting your own organization then you can make it your own thing where you don't get overwhelmed by it. If you're working for a police department or some other agency then they have their own stipulations that they go by. For example, when I worked at the police department we dealt with all victims but if you want to specifically cater to victims of domestic violence or sexual assault then you can do that and not have to worry about all the extras that can be time-consuming but aren't as severe. When I say extras I mean like victims of financial crime or exploitation and things like that.

@DaytoDaySocialWork6 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank for watching! I don't know that you need to get a certification but you may want to check with your state, you could start by calling a local police department or courthouse/solicitor's office to ask questions about the requirements for your specific area. I am no longer a victim advocate but I had experience working with victims because I am a social worker. At the time I started that job, I had a master's degree in social work and a bachelor's degree in sociology and criminal justice. You probably don't need all of those credentials to start but you definitely need to have some experience doing similar work. I think you should just do research and see what you come up with for your state/city.

What is the best major to go into this field? Criminal Justice, Sociology, or Social Work?
@DaytoDaySocialWork8 жыл бұрын
Out of those three I would say social work. Either will lay a foundation but social work is the best to prepare you, in my opinion. I have a bachelor's in sociology with a minor in criminal justice and a master's in social work. I think a bachelor's in social work would do for this position. I'm really over qualified as I'm a licensed, master level social worker.

Hi there! I think it depends, if you're able to give resources and that's the only thing that the client needs then you can close it but if it's going to court I would say after it's disposed of in court. Sometimes a 3-month follow-up is necessary or whatever your department deems as a follow-up period.

And most importantly you have to back up the sheriff's department in any and all arrests they make relating to the alleged acts of domestic violence , there are many many legit cases of domestic violence , but did you know terroristic threat is a verbal threat that is considered domestic violence and all it takes to get your spouse arrested for this is an accusation alone and based off this arrest you can obtain an EPO on the alleged offender which kicks him out of his home and everything inside as well as his children for x amount of days or months , all of this on accusations alone .. cool huh .. it's a known fact women never lie, all women are victims, and all men are abusers, women do not try to cover up all the other forms of abuse other than physical, by playing the abused wife role .. that is not at all a possibility and seldom if ever is the case ... your job is to get convictions by playing a role and being an expert witness ..lol
