@@64C10Claymore Ye, I was kind of surprised that even without an auto cut, they didn't have at least something on the dash to make the driver aware of oil starvation. I guess though, you don't think you need it, till you need it (especially with something that's had otherwise flawless reliability).

lets just wait till we see if theres any top end damage or exploding parts when he does the next few runs before we start dishing out too much praise or criticism. Working on engines for 4 decade now ive never seen anyone fully get away with running with A. No oil or a lack of. B. No oil pressure at all for anything over than a brief time. Massive Lorry/Boat/Locomotive diesel engines can take it but thats about the only ones ive came across that do. Never heard anyone say "yeah see that engine i ran without oil, its done another 100k miles mate" 😂

neglegence is different though. I never subbed D-Sparks mate im not watching destruction for the sake of it content. Steves the man but this is a bit of a dodgy one. Bit vague on his resons for the pressure sensor not being working or tunrned on. Was that because it didnt like one of his new additives/coatings? Steves not usually so vague but maybe because he just doesnt know yet.

@@bigduphusaj162 He was not chasing a engine issue or power issue, he was focused on 60 foot and tyre shake, I have done the same tunnel vision on a problem I know and not looking for something i don't know. In my case I was focused on a crank sensor problem and missed a dropping fuel pressure (so turned all those traces off so I could see) and I even had a spare pump with me! If I had have had a low fuel pressure safety... No-one was more disappointed than myself at missing one thing I usually look at every run being fuel pressure and injector duty cycle. Put money on the fact suspension travel, wheel speed, driveshaft speed, shift points, boost curve, launch RPM, GForce and timing were the focus of the problem he was trying to solve.

Shocking just how good the bearings looked for zero oil pressure for the amount of run time with burnouts/etc. I assume roller cam bearings so that should be good, however the valvetrain and turbos running that amount of time without oil is concerning. Steve is one hell of an engine designer/builder, and obviously has worked his sack off for the past couple of days and still has the energy to try and get something together for the event, my hats off to you.

I'm 60 and have had 60+ street/strip or track only cars, with power from just over 300hp to twin turbo cars with well over 2000hp. I've never even HEARD of an engine that survived so much as a single burnout without catastrophic failure with no oil pressure. Whatever you're doing. You're doing it incredibly well. Don't sweat not noticing the oil pressure (or lack of it). We all get wrapped up in the mass of things happening in the moment. Whatever coating you are running on those bearings, and Whatever lubricant you are running, I want to know, and I'll be switching to it. That engine surviving is THE most impressive thing I've seen in 45 years of racing. Above all, thanks for always, consistently sharing the real truth of what happens in your racing operations. Because of how honest and transparent you are, I literally never miss a single one of your videos. Keep doing what you're doing.

I heard what you said about the oil cut out in the software . Me and dad had a Red trailer light to a low pressure switch that would come on and you could not ignore it . Saved at least one of our engines from damage . Would be nice to have a non software based backup for something so important .

I know that feeling all to well. Back in the late 80s, my dad had an 19ft fishing boat that I was never aloud to drive, ever. out with him one day noy catching much mostly just riding around, he looks at me an says you wanna try an drive, I said hell yea..... he kind of grinned an a little chuckle. he stops the boat we trade places .I put it in gear give it some throttle an away we go. pops says hold the throttle about 2500 rpm on course what ever. right o daddy o I say, we were cursing along about 5 min later an kaboom . what the hell was that we turned around just in time to see the dog house come back down. he looks at me an says what the hell did you do to my boat. Apon tare down we found that the cam gear was made of pressed particle board an the gear was fatigued enough it just blew apart........not my Falt .......but he never let me drive the boat again............

I had a bad feeling something bad was going to happen when I saw how severe the tire shake was... I thought you were going to break some kind of driveline part... I could damn near feel the tire shake in my chest... Good luck Steve do what you do now and get it back going

With all the technology in the car it would make sense to set up a safety where the engine won't run for more than 5 seconds with under "X" oil pressure. Sorry for the loss, I don't blame him missing it, far too many other things on his mind just driving the car.

I agree. Exposed oil pump belts ion expensive race engines seen like such a big risk. Most of the competitors seem to put the cars together in such an insane rush before the events that missing things must be inevitable. A check list with things as critical as oil pressure safety systems on it would seem a good idea.

hmmm how have you deduced from this that the line2line coating has done anything? The bottom end will always get some oil on it you rarely dry that out with pump failure. I think Steve needs to explain why the pressure sensor wasnt working or turned on. Was it off for a reason? was the reason that some coating hes poured in has messed his sensor up? Just hold back there on the praise mate till we see whats going on

@@bigduphusaj162 sensor was on, since he could see it in his logs. i'm really surprised the ecu screen doesn't flash a mega alarm when the pressure drops to 0. there's gotta be something like that in the ecu's software he's using, i'm sure (or hope).

I am so glad you shared this video with us, there are so many things going thru my mind, 1) As a racer I total understand how something so simple can go unnoticed, racing is all about hard work and overcoming so many obstacles, I know what its like to put the rods in the pan on a burn out because the oil pump pick up broke in half and at other times have the most amazing days of racing. Things can get hectic. 2) I really love how this is a family affair, 3) Kyle has some skills. he was on a pass. 4) Racing is never a linear progression, one step forward requires 3 steps back. 4)I cant wait to see this wagon back in action soon.

I spent way to much time explaining to idiots talking out of their ass about the smx saying he hurts them all the time it's not a good engine blah blah blah😂.. thank God the kind of people that talk dumb like that are never going to be in the market for something like this anyway so their opinions mean nothing to anyone that matters... First of all Steve trees all the new things on his personal engine before anyone else's so yeah he's going to come across parts that don't meet his expectations.. he's even testing new coatings on the Pistons in This one .. and the big failure he had in the old engine was from trying a new rod... But if you actually use your common sense and think about how many of these engines are out there doing just fine you'd think people could figure it out.. when you race at this level you're going to hurt stuff regardless of what you have especially if your oil pumps not working because the belt came off that will hurt even them Almighty LS that everybody talks about... That would hurt your Geo Metro on the way to the store if it ran the same way... I just don't understand why people comment on a topic if they don't know anything about it... Asking a question is fine but trying to be a smart-ass when you don't know the first thing about racing at this level just makes you look stupid to the people that do and no one takes you seriously... murder Nova and Justin swanstrom Both sent cranks out the bottom of their billet engines and they were two completely different brands go figure .. guess proline and noonan cant build engines now 😂... Nope they can and do build great engines too but like I said when you're pushing things past 4000 wheel horsepower you're going to hurt stuff whether you like it or not Steve is just one of the very few rare builders that share everything good or bad..

That's pretty damn honest and humble of ya to own up to that huge mistake, Steve. Honestly, honesty is extremely rare these days. Bittersweet day. Mom dips into the 9's which was totally AWESOME--and the waggin gets hurt which is SO heart wrenching. Congrats on Kyle making it into the 7's! Ok, first sorry about the wagon. I'll come back to that. But how friggin cool is your ol' lady? God Bless her for getting back in the seat. She improved very rapidly and with your son running crew chief she put down a 9.9! What a great family you have there. I could not be more impressed. Ok, if the thrust bearing is all that is hurt, that would make you the luckiest man on the planet. However, if it has welded itself to the crank... that could be bad, even if you are able to remove it. Fingers crossed it goes your way. Love up on that woman, she is a keeper. Kyle is quite a man as well. Well done, Sir.

It is completely amazing how great that engine did!! Fact of life is that sometimes you don't think to set up some of your safeties until you already needed them. It happens.
