The Last Homely House

Күн бұрын

I love cooking for John, I almost always make his favourite flan, but on this day it was really cold, despite being half way through March.
Lighting the fire, chopping and stirring, enjoying the smell of the fragrant stew. All really comfortable! John and I had a really good catch up!
Over on Patreon I make a weekly video all about my daily life here at The Last Homely House.
/ thelasthomelyhouse plus some other really friendly posts and polls.
Sign up to the newsletter on the website to hear about the charity donation I make each month with the Ad Revenue from KZfaq.
www.thelasthomelyhouse.co.uk
every month I make a selection from everyone signed up to the newsletter to receive a gift from the Shop.
the shop has been closed for a few days while Anna was on holiday, everything back to normal now!
the music I chose from Epidemic Sound is called 'A Good Day to Live' which, indeed, it is!
Adapted from a recipe by Nick Knowles
Wholesome Winter Stew with Lumpy Dumplings!
for the dumplings
50g butter
40g cheddar cheese
125g SR flour
plus salt and pepper
cold water to combine
for the stew
olive oil
fry chopped celery, onions, potato, carrots, turnip, mushrooms, chestnuts, garlic
I didn't, but you can add in sweet potato if you like and parsnip
vegetable stock, bouquet garni, tomato paste, chilli flakes, salt and pepper.
Simmer all the stew ingredients for a couple of hours.
top with the dumplings and pop into a hot oven, (200'C) for about 20 minutes until the dumplings are golden.
serve with a green vegetable. this serves four., John and I ate the lot!

I always felt like a failure because I didn’t complete my projects from start to finish, before starting a new project. I can’t tell you the weight that I feel has been lifted off of my shoulders!! You have given me a new perspective . I love, love , love your videos. Please keep them coming.

For everybody who is asking about Kates wood stove, I can tell you it is made by a Norwegian company named Jøtul. Their stoves always have decorations from Norwegian folklore or nature images. The text on the front reads in Norwegian “Eg grev ned min eld sent om kveld naar dagen er slut. Gud gje min eld alder slokna ut.» Wich translate to something like “I bury my fire late at night when the day has ended. God give that my fire never fade out” This was a cozy video! Thanks Kate! Hugs from Norway 🌈

Watching this reminded me of a quote by Laura Ingalls Wilder! "As the years pass, I am coming more and more to understand that it is the common, everyday blessings of our common everyday lives for which we should be particularly grateful. They are the things that fill our lives with comfort and our hearts with gladness -- just the pure air to breathe and the strength to breath it; just warmth and shelter and home folks; just plain food that gives us strength; the bright sunshine on a cold day; and a cool breeze when the day is warm."

Kate, this is one of my favorite kinds of videos that you make :) If you hadn't fast-forwarded through the chopping, I would have happily watched all that at regular speed too, it's so calming. I'm watching it a 2nd time now, as I rest on the sofa. As a mom of 2 sons, it's so sweet to see you sitting there with your boy for dinner. The stew looks amazing. We do various dumplings here too (US) -- some are like biscuits (not cookies, you understand), and some are really noodles. Yours seem like cheese biscuits, which I haven't seen before. Thanks so much for letting us come along!

I have been part of a group of friends who like to quilt for 10 years. We saved the thin trimmings from blocks and the quilt edge to fill the cups of an egg carton. Melted old candles and drizzled it over the fabric. When set cut the egg carton into cups. Great fire starters for camping.

That looks so good! I grew up with dumplings on stew; but on the Canadian prairie the dumplings have a much stickier, thick batter that is spooned onto the top of the stew, cover with a lid and steamed on top of the stove. Instead of your lovely golden biscuit tops our dumplings have a very soft, moist surface. I will have to give this a try!
