My son plays NES games for the first time

My son Owen has never really played NES games, and he might be in for a rude awakening with the difficulty of some of them. Thanks to the MiSTer, he gets to explore some of them and these are his raw reactions!

A loud "You jerk!" came out of my mouth before I could stop myself (it's like 3 am here...) when G&G popped up as the first game. What are you trying to do, traumatize the kid? More people need to give 2D some love, especially the old school 2D! Then Contra comes up. 🤘You're a good father after all.

Haha, redemption! I wanted that shock factor, since I never enjoyed G&G myself, but remember trying it several times as a kid. Fortunately he still thought the games were ok after the fact, and I hopefully haven't made him swear of retro forever.

He's an avid gamer, just newer stuff, and to be fair some platformers like modern Mario etc. But yeah, he did well!

Wow yeah Ghosts and Goblins is indeed quite difficult! Definitely Castlevania is more forgiving. Great job!

i remember when i was a kid the thing i loved about contra was two people could play at the same time. same thing with double dragons, battletoads, etc. so i didn't have to wait for my cousin to just beat the whole game of super mario before i got a turn.

Ooh, a random algorithm find! I liked watching him go through _Super Mario Bros_ . It's an incredibly fair game for the time in that the controls and collision detection are very precise, so if you die it's almost always _your fault_ , unlike a lot of arcade games at the time where things were a little more mushy. I think if he'd sat down with that game (or the _Super Mario All-Stars_ remake) he would've become very good very fast. Now I'm off to watch the rest. You should play _River City Ransom_ with him some time! That's a pretty amazing game for the time period!

Nice, welcome! And yeah I really feel they nailed the "feel" of Mario even back then. It felt so precise, and agreed when you died it was usually your own fault. I might have to do a followup, because there are so many good NES games out there, this being a tiny slice. We did record some more that same night, but I didn't want to have an hour long video, plus some games were a bit frustrating for him!

@@RiksRandomRetro It's just such a different era, the rules were different. So much was trying to replicate the arcade "so many quarters have to go into the machine at a certain rate" vibe. But he seemed to take it all in good stride. It was a fun video. :)

my very faint memories of the nes are that i was pretty good.. even though i never came close to beating a single one and was 3 years old when the snes came out.. but in reality, i imagine it looked something like this

Sadly we did! Unfortunately OBS didn't close the file, so it was not recoverable. A bummer because I wanted it to be a "fresh" reaction, he was a bit shocked at that game, as he should have been hah.

Haha, I wanted him to get a real taste of things, with some mixture. I even had to cut a couple of games out, to not make the video too long. He really struggled with the timing in Punch Out, just to name one more.
