MY SON'S AUTISM DIAGNOSIS | How I Knew My Child Was Autistic - Autism Spectrum Disorder/PDA

I've had a couple of requests to share my experience with my son's autism diagnosis, so this video explains our journey from when he was a baby, how I knew he was Autistic and how being on the Autism Spectrum affects his day to day life.
Alongside Zachary's Autism Spectrum Disorder, he also has traits of Pathological Demand Avoidance, although he has not officially been diagnosed with this condition, I explain why within this video. He also has other medical issues which mean he has had his fair share of hospital appointments and admissions.
Zachary goes to a mainstream school, with the aid of an Educational Healthcare Plan, and although his development is a few years behind, he is doing well and we are all very proud of him.
I also touch upon his behaviours now, how Autism can affect his emotions and sensory overload. I also discuss how his new found love for Karate has been beneficial.

I can listen to you talking about your kids all day! You are so well spoken. It’s really put things in perspective for me in seeing how supportive, positive, and loving you are to your kids. I have a baby with breathing issue and it makes me so depressed for the longest time but I watching you give me an inspiration to accept things as is and focus my energy on how to best care for my baby. That’s so sweet of you to say and I’m so glad you’re finding my videos helpful. Having children with medical needs can be so hard and there’s so many emotions to navigate, it took me a while to start pushing myself to keep a positive outlook, the journey is a rollercoaster xx

As a retired preschool teacher this is so interesting to me. You were so smart to get early intervention! Zach is blessed to have you as his mother! It’s not uncommon for parents to be in total denial for their child’s first few years in school. I understand the denial from a parental perspective but it simply is a disservice to the children!🥰

Honestly I wouldn’t have even known where to start if it wasn’t for the preschool. They did such a good job sending me in all the right directions. Zach gets all the support he needs now xx

@@mummyandavery it’s so much easier for a non family member to recognize delays! I am a college educated teacher and didn’t recognize my first child’s speech delays. Like you mentioned, I understood her babble perfectly clearly. My mother in law gently suggested we should look into her speech. I was insulted! But she was correct! LOL My daughter is a lovely, bright, 33 year old special education teacher today! They do grow up! 🥰🙏🏼

No matter how educated a person is, we are all so unprepared for the things our first child throws at us!! I was so much better prepared for my second child… 😉👍🏼

You did a great job at explaining. I am a retired school teacher and I have worked with many children on the spectrum. Zachary seems to be high functioning. What a wonderful kid … I would have absolutely enjoyed him! Children on the spectrum have so much to contribute! He did such a good job helping you with this video. He is precious! You are such a good mother.

I live in the USA and it's interesting how different being diagnosed with Autism in the UK is. Here you have to wait until your child is 3 and even then it's a struggle. My son Eli was diagnosed at 5 years old in kindergarten. He's now in 5th grade. My daughter just turned 4 and she was diagnosed with Autism as well. I know with my son he's a visual learned, maybe do a red car and green card which would indicate when his brother wants to play.

We did traffic light cards when Zachary was younger and it did work well, that’s not a bad idea to reintroduce them. My younger son is also called Eli 😁❤️

Dance. Dance. Dance. This is the best thing for autistic kids, IMO. The learning to coordinate your movement and concentration on the music simultaneously is great for brain development ❤ FYI, I love ❤❤❤❤ that he is doing his marshal arts, not suggesting that Eli should give this up but adding dance could be amazing ❤ He is a an amazing kid with a very bright future, I have no doubt about that, he is so kind and smart. He’s a very likeable young guy.

Zachary doesn’t do karate at the moment, when we moved we didn’t have the same kind which meant he’d have to start from a white belt again and he didn’t want to. He’s quite shy im not sure if I could get him dancing xx

That she does! We’ve tried gentler movements obviously knowing that would be more ideal for her reflux but it just doesn’t settle her in the same way xx

In, Australia, the maternal health nurse does developmentally checks on all children until they are at least 3 1/2 years old. I thought the UK would have the same free services.

We have health visitors but I don’t remember having any appointments with them after he turned 1 xx

Hi crissy just want to say u empower me im going through a difficult time with my son and you give me strength power to accept and get on with it accept it can u ask what age did he start talking like going from non verbal to talking u said at 2 he said few words what age did u know he was going to be verbal also did they say he was serve on the scale or low thanks kerrie

Aww I’m so glad you’re finding comfort in our videos. He was 3 when he started stringing a few words together. A lot of the time it didn’t make sense but we knew what he was trying to say. I was worried when he started school that teachers wouldn’t understand him and he was 4 then, but he managed well. Even now at almost 10 he gets some words mixed up and his sentences don’t roll off the tongue easily for him. He’s started using phrases like ‘you better not’, I don’t think he means to be rude at all and although I try to correct the way he speaks to people I know he’s still learning to communicate appropriately. He definitely functions very well he isn’t severe. But as he gets older I see more traits particularly when it comes to regulating emotions and needing to control a situation. Xx

If you put her for a nap and she’s not sleeping would it be ok to leave her chilling( obviously not if she’s upset). Give you both a little break ( no criticism, you’re doing a great job, just a little question :0)

I can see from an outside perspective it looks like I’m quite vigorous. Avery prefers faster rocking and bouncing motions, I think it’s to do with her sensory processing and how her body sends feedback to her brain. We learnt how she likes to be soothed from lots of trial and error. I’m sorry if you find it upsetting but Avery gets upset if I don’t do it. X

Avery prefers stronger sensory input, she’s always settled better being wiggled and jiggled. I promise you I’m not causing her any discomfort I’ve just learnt through a lot of trail and error that she’s more settled by vigorous movement xx
