I haven't seen the first reboot film (though I plan to before the third one comes out this summer), but I loved the second (I still enjoy Cumberbatch as Khan immensely). And I've watched some of the films from the 80s which are incredibly campy - so campy that if it wasn't the storyline for a popular sci-fi franchise, it would be made fun of relentlessly. I like Star Wars just slightly more, and while my knowledge of Star Trek is fairly basic as I focused more on Potter and Tolkien (and classical literature) as a kid, I can still enjoy. I only watch the original series if I want to watch the show though. I love Patrick Stewart, but the newer series never appealed to me at all when I tried to watch the show. I don't have that problem with the original. I'd say to give a few TV episodes, and a movie or two a chance at least. If you want a movie filled with the original spirit of the show, go for something like Wrath of Khan.

Want to watch one that has breathtaking cinematography (people can complain about Abrams lens flare as much as they want - it still creates beautiful films), a slightly updated feel, and straddles the line between similar and completely different (as opposed to Star Wars which is exceedingly similar with some things changed), then the reboots would be your thing. Personally, I think they did the casting of the reboot perfectly. And Simon Pegg is a huge Trekkie and actually was one of the writers for the newest movie. But if you find you end up not feeling the desire to watch any of it after all, or don't like it - that's perfectly fine. No matter what some ardent fans may say, you're not any less cultured or have poor taste just because you don't like it. I feel Potter, Star Wars, and Star Trek fans forget that on occasion (haven't met many Tolkienite's who act that way though).
