I'd like to introduce you to all of the bookbinding presses I have in the workshop. Each has a special place, a special purpose and use for the various stages in book crafting.
I've acquired my presses from a variety of places such as:

As an engineer, an amateur woodworker, and someone wanting to dabble in book binding, the more you show your tools and talk about them, the more I learn and the closer I get to having a go at it. Thank you for this, your time, and the inspiration that you give.

I am jealous and also love that you work with your Dad, I lost my Dad on New Years Day, I am grateful to have worked with him for 13 years and him living with my wife and I for the last 5 years. Cherish your time with him, I goes by in the blink of an eye! By the way, love your video as always!

Very nice work! I know of one small maker of bookbinding equipment who started out to learn binding and got sidetracked by the other! Your mention of ploughs reminds me of something I saw recently that I didn't think possible. A fellow was simply using the very sharp blade from a large hand plane, held flat on the top of a hardwood lying press. Holding the cordage-wrapped "handle" in one hand and pushing smoothly with the fingers of the other hand, he produced a very clean straight cut book edge. Of course that steel is well honed, and his technique was solid. I'd be concerned about the wear on the top of the press, but it looked to be in good shape!

Sounds quite interesting! He probably picked it up early on and it somehow formed into a well-skilled habit. I don't imagine myself doing that though, I put too much trust in the plough!

Really nice story. The Olive and Oak pygmy presses look really nice! It's taken me years to gather my equipment too, but after listening to you talk about yours I don't think I appreciate mine enough. And I think you've inspired me to pull New Directions off the bookshelf and give maril a go.

Thank you! The press really is a pleasure to work with, I had some reservations for a long time due to its price. It's worth it though, especially if you're not producing large format books. I hope to get my hands on that book sometime as well! Have a great week!

@@Stopan I've been rebinding old bibles I collect and trying to learn from other people online that have been doing it for awhile, what you do is completely different, my goal was to take a book that has been neglected and repair and replace it's cover with goatskin and it looks great, you actually make the book in the way I'm trying to mimmick, its impressive, thanks for reaching out, I'm an ironworker and do rebinding as a hobby and haven't been at it very long but I've collected bibles for longer, the current ones don't compair to the way they used to be made as you know

God love you for keeping the hand bound book tradition alive. The vises and presses are very similar to woodworking Moxon type vises. Mostly for dovetail work. Really, the solid, well designed presses are a god-send. Especially when the press crafter knows what the end use is. Keep up the tradition. The work is gorgeous and wonderful.

I studied about bookbinding since 2016 and keep practicing on making book with my own inspiration. It took me a long journey as that I studied by my own from youtube. Wow, this was such an insightful and wonderfully inspiring video! It was a real pleasure to listen to you reminisce on the tools you used earlier in your bookbinding journey and ponder on the possible future that lay ahead. I would love to see more videos like this. Listening to you describe your own techniques and processes while filming is most informative and quite satisfying to watch. It's a gratifying experience to watch someone work who is deeply passionate and dedicated to what they are doing. Hey Stopan, wonderful to see you keeping this art alive! Have you heard of Frank Wiesner from Australia? He is making some absolutely beautiful presses and machinery, from Australian timbers. He is getting old (88 years) and when I was last at his workshop he mentioned he may soon retire. Check him out! I urge you to get one of his beautiful items....absolutely spectacular.

I’m fairly new to bookbinding. Could you possibly do a detailed tutorial On how you tie your headbands? Or point me to a good resource. They’re quite impressive.

I have a makeshift bookbinding press. I do junk journals ( creating a book from an old book or from scratch. ) any suggestions on how to bind them I would assume with glue after sewn of course…?

Ah, sorry about that. Well, the screw on the plough brings the blade closer to the other side when turned. You actually twist the screw progressively until the book edge is cut.

I love your videos and have followed you for years. For now I have too many hobbies, but maybe some time in the future I might get into bookbinding. I just wanted to shoot in that for beginners, a press used to press meat called "syltepresse" from Norway could be useful. This press for example: www.jernia.no/kj%C3%B8kken/matlaging/kj%C3%B8kkenutstyr/p%C3%B8lsestapping/aanonsen-syltepresse-tre/p/14395503 and there are many other variants if you google the word.

how unprofessional of that carpenter to reject a paid job purely because they don't understand it. although to be fair, if you cant wrap your head around the concept of a book press should you even be allowed near sharp tools?

I get what you mean, Sam! To be honest, I'd completely understand if somebody wants to reject a project, because it's not in your line of work. I do it too, for example I usually reject making photo albums because I just don't have interest in making them, though they are also a book in their own right. In this particular experience, the carpenter first accepted the project, then told it would take a week, after two weeks he stopped picking up his phone, and on the third asked what was the project about anyway. After two more months he just asked us to stop calling and forget about the press, haha. It was at this point I started searching for carpenters that work solely on bookbinding equipment.
