I really enjoyed hearing your story. When I was young I always wanted to be a farmer. My dad was a county extension director. Both he and my mom were raised on farms. I helped friends during high school on their family farms. When I was old enough I joined 4-H and raised hogs. I rented space from farmers that were close enough to town to bike to. I learned early on that if you didn't grow up in a farm family it's hard to get land. So I did three years in the army, went to college to become a teacher. I taught for 33 years. I retired, sort of, 3 years ago. I now deliver mail. I am a small town guy and my happiest times are when I'm out in the country.

I have always been a throwback. Always wanted to have feed animals and horses. I love hearing your story, and I can totally relate!

Loved watching this video. My husband has grown up farming all of his young life...he is 62 now. Times were hard & his parents lost their farm. He has always worked jobs that had to do with farming in one way or another. Now his youngest son has his own land with 40 pairs on it. And they also farm 400 acres of various crops corn/soybeans/hay. He is helping his son make it work. It's a tough road but they both love it. We live in Southeast Kansas & farmers around here are not of the younger generation...if you know what i mean. Stick to your dreams and "grow" with them. Much luck to you!

I just came across this. I’ve been watching your videos for a while. It is nice to understand your story. Little bits of it resonate with my own - and other bits are completely different. What is the same is that we both run a small beef herd … and enjoy doing so. In spite of being at opposite ends of the earth … we share a Mediterranean climate and some other things. I'm in a similar situation. Currently living/working on a farm my grandparents owned. Seems like the ownership mentality skipped a generation or so and it fell into disrepair, so I moved in and am in the process of bringing it back to life. I see it much as you do. Keep thier legacy alive.

This video came up on my recommendations. Watched it when it originally came out, and watched it again just now. So much has changed on the Farmer Tyler ranch since then. You have surely honored your grandfather's legacy. Also, the progression of doggies at the beginning is kind of funny - the very old one that must be lifted, the second one that halfway makes it into the truck, and the third one that can jump.

I made it to the end. I maybe an old lady from NC but I was raised on a farm and I can understand your dream. The sad thing is that things where I live have gotten so expensive that people are selling their farms piece at a time to people who want to live in the country but have no idea about loving the life. I have worked in healthcare for 38 years. I have always felt that my education was excellent not just because we had fabulous professors who had many years of hands on experience, but because over the two years of the course we spent 2400 hours in local hospitals for clinical practicum. It was quite expensive for the era, but so excellent that I have never regretted it. This wasn't a profession I would have imagined for myself, but I took a job as a nurses aide to prevent starving and ended up helping the RTs and it all just fell into place.

After watching the many projects you came up with on your Farm, You a definitely are a Great Fabricator!

Your story was wonderful to hear all about. Your family is fortunate that you wanted to continue this important work.

I lived all my life in city, but I know what you meant by "whoever gets it, gets it, who doesn't, doesn't"! Always loved to live a country life, always wanted a smaller house with big land. Married to a girl, who likes firm-living, but also like city life, and these two doesn't go together. You are right about college vs experience. I went to school to be a teacher, and then found out that teaching was not my job. What made college valuable, I think, was learning how to learn, and finding out that there was a whole lot in this world to learn about. Most of what I know and use every day, I learned on the job.

Tyler, I appreciate you taking time out to tell us your story. There’s nothing like wonderful grandparents to give us our beginning in terms of love for whatever it is be at farming, gardening, raising flowers to sell Sewing, Carpentry etc. I had a wonderful grandparents to and they were big influencers in my life and I am forever grateful to him as well as my parents. I just wanted to share with you that from the time I was a little girl until I was 10 years old my father and mother leased land and I was in aware of this or even a difference between owning and leasing until we were forced to move off of a beautiful 640 acre property with a Victorian 2-story house with a large amount of rooms and cool things that no other house ever had had before or afterwards and we were in heaven there. My dad certainly had his hands full farming this place as well as working at Maytag and helping his father with his farm. We had moved twice in my lifetime but when I was 10 and we had to move off that farm I was devastated as was my siblings when we learned that it wasn’t our land or our house & instead they purchased a small farm under the wrong one and a half story house on it which what is so tiny and did not have running water in it except cold no I didn’t have a bathroom and by then there were 11 children and I’m telling you we were mad, but mom and dad had a vision to pay off the farm in five years and at the same time begin building a new house which we did last children whenever we had a free moment we’re digging the basement for the first room so that mother had a warm place to do her laundry in the winter time and a place for her canned goods and a furnace and firewood and a working toilet😃 Eventually, after we laid block and poured the cement flooring for that basement, daddy added a room on top and a hole was cut between the two so that we had a dining room for all of the people that came to our house on the regular basis and when I was 17 they began building the new house but I left for college and never lived in it. In fact half of the children did not live in it but it was a beautiful farm and we had probably 4 to 5 acres of garden and orchard where we had all the food we could possibly want… excellent food as well as beef and pork which was butchered on a regular basis so I grew up with the best and I’m grateful for how hard my parents worked and taught us to work and for all they gave us and they did pay that form off in under five years and I’ll never forget the day that my father came home and laid the deed to the property with it extra hundred dollar bill on the table and we all stood Garking at that hundred dollar bill because we’ve never seen one before… That was win a dime Would buy a lot. In fact recently my son computed value of that dime in 1971 to what it would be worth in 2022 and the price was $96.07. We were totally surprised!!!😊❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️ Anyway I think my father was in his mid-40s when they bought that farm and I just don’t want you to give up on your dream of owning your own place!!!!!! Just start putting some money aside every chance you get and eventually it will be enough for that down payment on a place or where are you living the person will sell it to you or your grandmother will sell her place to you but you just have to have faith that something will come your way and you just do your part towards saving for it that’s exactly how my parents got it… they also started working on jobs in the evening calling daddy resurface the hardwood floors at schools in droves school buses for evening sports games; they went in and cleaned the restaurants locally after closing hours and I would babysit the six younger children till they got home… Things like that. Just some ideas and you’re such a great welder is it maybe you could hire for repairs or making gates and panels for people the internets a great place to advertise for your kind of talent and skills. Anyway I wish you and your wife the very best and as long as you work together and you make your goals together, everything will come out OK as long as you have each other that’s all that matters. My parents loved each other very much and it was obvious that they did and everybody admire them for their hard work in their Love for each other. They had great faith and nothing else matters❣️❣️❣️❣️

You are a good person, Tyler. I am living on the homestead my dad bought in the 40’s. He started the farm after the war years, where he served. Good feeling to have deep roots.

I'm fairly new to your show I have been enjoying it so much and have now came across your story. I completely agree my siblings and I grew up in a city and our Grandparents lived North about 7hrs on a farm every school break that's where we wanted to be on the farm and if our parents couldn't take us they would send us on the Grey Hound Bus sadly the farm is no longer in the family 😢. And I can't go a day with out watching your show Tyler !!

Great story I'm sixty one now Started with fifteen acres then bought a family farm of 318 acres. I started with tobacco on the fifteen acres. Rented or picked up parcels for hay. Mom and Da had twelve acres that I started with basically 5 cull cows and a bull I fed to use. I was a grass farmer they called me. Hay and cattle. Now I raise about 200 acres of soybeans, 150 acres of good pasture. I run around 70 head of cows with calves. My boys are kinda interested but don't have that hungry look in their eyes I used to see in the mirror. I've done my part. It's up to them when I'm gone.

Brilliant story Tyler, may I wish you and your wife the very best of luck with your goals, and my God bless you both. This story is very familiar to me, and just like me, you have the farming disease, I firmly believe it is something to behold, and only those that have it can understand it. Regarding the people that want your rented property, that is a universal problem for us small farmers, my advice is just keep a step ahead of them. Look after the land like it is your own, that way the owner can have no complaints, because I have found that owners of rented land prioritise how their land is treated more the rental income.

So much enjoyed learning about your start. It is incredible how our early paths paralleled each other. I spent time just like you on my grandpa's farm (corn & beans row-cropped, fed 250 head of feeder cattle, farrow-finished 400 sows, & 10-15 thousand turkeys each year) learned so much from my grandpa, who in addition to farming was a cattle buyer. From him I learned by actions, not words that a man's word was his bond. The buyer said I want so many head of calves at such and such weight, my grandpa said I will have them for you with no contracts signed. Those were the good old days! Excellent video. I totally relate. Gramps was the one who instilled in me the values that you have today. Personal yes, but needed to be said to today's world. Hay, straw, alfalfa, timothy seed, clover to let the land rest, and keeping seed beans to replant the following year. Used wire, then bailing twine. We had trouble finding kids my age who would bail and work in the loft.. Jeans, flannels, in 110 degree mows. Then we'd find the nearest pond to cool off and semi wash and cool down. Hard work, wonderful life.

Great video! It explains a lot about your character. I grew up on a crop farm, vegetables, where they ran a few cows, chickens and hogs. As I near retirement, I’m finding myself looking for a place to do that myself. However, land in Texas is so expensive! In the meantime, I’ll just live that part of my life vicariously through you. Firstly can I say that's a beautiful photo of your wife and yourself with the dogs. Secondly, yourself and my hubby are so alike, not in looks but in farming history. He started working on a farm, helping the Cattleman. I think after several months they got him into the tractor ploughing. After that he done all jobs. He loved welding, doing the harvest crops, everything. Unfortunately after many years the farm went into Receivership and hubby was paid off but everything turned out well. I'm rattling on here, I hope I've not taken up too much of your time 😊😊 I really enjoyed that. ☺☺🌿💟🌿

Then, you found a young lady who wants to share your dreams. I grew up on a small grade b dairy and cow/calf farm about 100 miles north of you. That life style is a very fond memory and certainly gives you great work ethics. At this age of well past retirement I still long for for the farm life...or at least parts of it. So glad to have found your channel, it is a joy to follow you along...and, to see that you really did learn from your grandpa the slow, methodical way with cattle. “You can’t teach experience”- best quote ever. That’s what these new “homesteaders” must comprehend. They want every animal, dairy and beef cattle, raised garden beds of all kinds, breeding etc. 10 acres isn’t enough. My papaw had 1800 acres, and when I watch I just think, they need a mentor. I love that you’re following in your grandpas footsteps. You definitely learned more from the farmer you worked for than any college class. Your video(s) are my only current glimmer of hope/faith that there are still some people out there that are not only willing to do hard, honest, beneficial work, but love doing it. I sold a business several years ago and bought some property in the rolling hills of Tennessee....pretty much for a getaway property to hunt on. Over the next few years we built a cabin on it and a pole barn, got a tractor and some attachments, a decent used mini excavator, welder, plasma cutter, tools, etc... and so-on as needed to support my habit of making food plots, repairing equipment, fabricating odds and ends things, etc. I love for doing this stuff the whole time I'm there, there's no shortage of things to clean up, reclaim, haul off, etc... as I convert this sow's ear into a silk purse. I love doing it, from sun up til sun down when I'm here, yet my wife thinks I'm stressed out over all the work and hours......lol.....no matter how much I tell her I just love doing it and it gives me a huge sense of accomplishment. The problem here is NOBODY wants to work. I can't even get people to cut/bale hay off my property for FREE! Too bad you don't live close..... I'd be more than happy to let you farm the property, raise cattle, etc... as long as you were committed to maintaining/improving the land as you go and not letting it turn to overgrown briars, sagegrass, weeds, etc. I would even go as far as investing in equipment that could be paid off over a generous amount of time. Heck, my current neighbor has been running his cattle on some of my pastures for years, but has recently decided he may sell his place off....barns, ranch house, acreage, everything. Gonna miss him having his cattle around..... I even somewhat keep up with them during calving season as it's like a game to find where the mommas went and dropped calves, along overgrown fence lines, old timber wind rows, you name it. All of the fun, NONE of the responsibility....hahaha. Nevertheless, I really hope a good opportunity lands in your lap and you can take advantage of it. I know in a LOT of cases, that's all it takes.

Farmer Tyler Ranch 🐂🐂 This was a great video on your history farmer Taylor 🤠👍 I've had the honor of meeting a well-known scholar who took many years of college at Pierce college in woodland hills CA. It was the time the draft was in effect for Vietnam he stayed in school in order to avoid the draft. Years later when he graduated he decided he didn't want to work in an office or be around paperwork anymore after spending 6 years in college. So he decided to take a shop class across the street from Pierce college a school called West valley occupational center. They offered several shop classes and other high in demand occupations of the times. He chose auto body repair class he was in the class and enjoyed it got along with the teacher he graduated and got his dream job doing auto body repair work. He did it very well. Somehow he got the news the teacher at the occupational center he knew Mr Man Freddy was retiring and he wanted the job he could get a higher pay for teaching his profession he enjoyed and be around people that love to work on cars. High school students and adults. That's where I met this teacher Mike McLaughlin he trained me how to do auto body repair. 3 years I took that class alongside high School classes that were offered there. Farmer Taylor I'm telling you this story because you told a similar story only in reverse fashion. The man I knew as Mike McLaughlin went to college first then he went to a shop class and learned Auto body welding and fabrications. I thought that was interesting.
