#re-pothousplant, #FicusBenjamina, #Rootbound
The term "rootbound" means that the roots of a plant have taken up the whole space within the pot that contains it. Sometimes the roots can even escape through drainage hole in the bottom of the container and form a hard disc, (this is what exactly happened with my plant, as you can see in the video)
There are two primary solutions for a rootbound plant.
First, you can re-pot your plant, in a bigger pot with more soil, while loosening the roots.
And the second solution is to root-prune your plant.
Although root-pruning may sound intimidating, but don't worry. It is like doing a surgery to get rid of an unwanted growth.
Re-potting a root-bound plant encourages nutrient absorption for healthy growth, which is crucial to grow fuller and healthier plants.
It took me more than 4 hours and a lot of muscle power to re-pot my Ficus Benjamina.

I have a very large, totally rootbound ficus tree in my dining room. I haven't re-potted it for probably 10 or mor years, and it needs help. Your pruning and re-potting videos have encouraged me to spend the hours necessary to nurse it back to better health. Thanks so very much!

Oh my goodness. I have been needing to replant my rootbound FB for a couple of years. I had read that it wasn't possible because this tree is super sensitive. Now you have shown that it is not only very possible but will make the tree even more beautiful. Thank you so very much. Your videos are wonderfully helpful.

This was so helpful! I also inherited a ficus tree-three of them, actually!-when we bought this house 1.5 years ago. I’ve been trying to learn how to care for and revive them. It’s going well, but I’ve been uncertain about the next steps for pruning and repotting. Your videos have taught me what I need to do! Thank you very much for describing and filming your process!

Your video on repotting and pruning have inspired me to keep working on a fiscus tree left in a home I bought 30 years ago. Now, 10 moves later, it still looks almost as it did when I first saw it...leggy, not bushy and the same height. I've repotted it three times. Would you advise me to prune first then repot? Repot first then prune? If so, how much time in between? Or, can I repot & prune at the same time? I understand pre-winter is better to do these things versus in the spring? Yes? No? I'm so ready to help this plant show its beauty. Thanks again.

Thank you! Awesome! I also have a very large ficus that needs re-potting - and have been very hesitant to do it as I know it's going to be a really big job - but I'm feeling a little more capable/confident now :-) One question though...You drilled holes in the bottom of the new pot to prevent water from pooling in the bottom and rotting the tree's roots, but what did you then put under the pot to catch any water that might drain out?? (your new pot is beautiful by the way) All the pots I've seen that are big enough for a very large ficus have completely sealed bottoms (like yours before you drilled holes) which means they don't come with a matching drain saucer for under the pot :-(

I built a small platform with wood and tiles. and also I sealed the wood edges with silicon. And then I attached casters to the platform, which makes it easier to move the plant around for cleaning behind it.

It is more than 6 feet tall. For pruning of this plant, you can check my other video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o7NdpMmqmLORkqs.htmlsi=EI_0FvkBYBrXKUis. For care part, just water it, when the top layer of the soil is dry. I don't evern regularly fertilize mine, but you can fertilize it every few months with liquild fertilizer meant for indoor plants

@DIYHomeofMine
@DIYHomeofMine 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you should prune the plant (Watch my other video about pruning the same plant), and then re-pot it. It seems like your plant has become root bound. Therefore the roots also might need some pruning. I know it seems intimidating, but don't worry. Pruning the plant and the roots will help the plant to keep it healthy.

Yes you can....amend the soil with blood meal and bone meal. 50/50 ratio...and put outside and water liberally...then return inside. Prune when outside. You can spray the leaf's with hydrogen peroxide 1/10 ratio to clean and clear of bugs and eggs as well...
