A walkthrough of my Tormek T8 machine - how does it work? What are the jigs like? AND using their new diamond stone wheels... They make things sharp! In this session I'm doing chisels, knives and gouges.
Thanks Tormek for collaborating with me! Check out their stuff:

Actually, the torque is high and the speed is low. They use a pretty sizable reduction ratio on the drive based on the pictures but I do not know the exact ratio.

Hi Linn, Another great video. Just a thought on the magnetic swarf collector on the T8, I have the T4 and simply place an iron washer in the the tray and attach a rare earth magnet on the other side. When you are finished just lift off the magnet and then you can scrape off the swarf as per your demo. Clean the washer and set it up for the next sharpening session. Yes, the washer will rust with time but just replace it, the magnet will always be clean. Having clean, sharp tools ready for the next project is a great feeling.

I have two T8's and have only used the three diamond stones for several years. I use a 1x30 with a 120 grit cubitron belt to prep the blade for the Tormeks. blade. great vid.

What is really nice about the diamond wheel is that you don't need to periodically re-flatten the face. For my turning tools, I also have the concave.convex leather wheel on the honing side. The machine I have is a 2000, and I believe it was purchased around 1995. I am jealous of your model having a knob to raise and lower the water trough. Mine has tabs that you need to manually fit into slots to have the stone sit in the water. Can be quite a mess.

It’s funny I’ve had my T8 for about 14 years and in all that time I’ve had the smaller thin convex leather wheels but I don’t turn wood. You look like you know what you’re doing and you turn wood but you don’t have the small leather wheels. Save up and get them, they really make inside curves a breeze to hone.

Se kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJ2GZ8Wbyravm4E.html. Tormek har massor av andra bra klipp att titta på också. Ha det gött! /Steve

Never put the back of your chisel on a grinder. It will essentially put a back bevel on it. The idea for a well functioning chisel is to keep the back perfectly flat. Preparing a new chisel is to first flatten the back and keep it that way. A back bevel on a plane blade is useful and makes sharpening easier as you don't have to flatten a large portion of the back of the blade. Paring with a chisel with a back bevel reduces the level of control as it requires you to lift the handle to get it engage the cut.

I made this mistake once. It also makes chopping perpendicularly (i.e. a mortise) almost impossible.
@paulreevesjoinery8349

Absolutely, the back of the chisel is to be flat and this is the difference between good chisels and cheap one. On expensive chisels the back has be ground slightly hollow in the middle so when you hone it on a flat stone the edges are flat. You can see this clearly in Japanese chisels. I do hope you haven’t spoiled that chisel as it looked like a nice one. Nice video and fantastic to a young lady so into woodworking. As a professional woodworker for over 40 years we don’t see enough women in the industry or as hobbyists. And you’re English is excellent

I find it interesting that Tormek sells their very expensive rust inhibitor - but Nickel does NOT rust. Hmmm. I like the bees wax idea very much. I'm in Southern NC and our humidity is even worse. Did you finish those tools with the 1200 stone and then buff out the burr or does it work ok to use 600 and the buffing wheel?
@thomasliebreich3510
@thomasliebreich3510 Жыл бұрын
It‘s not the nickel, it‘s the iron particles from sharpening your stuff which could rust on the wheel.
@1DrBar
@1DrBar Жыл бұрын
@@thomasliebreich3510 I've used diamond plates (embedded in nickel plates for over a decade and have used both water and Windex on them. A lot of woodworkers use windex. No rust at all, as the swarf can not become embedded.

As a native English speaker, please accept my apologies for the spelling of trough. It is pronounced "troff" not "trow". Even though we don't pronounce though, plough, borough or enough similarly.

Which one is more suitable, diamond wheels or CBN wheels?Different people have different understanding, different companies also have different understanding. What I suggest is CBN wheel. Today I would like to express why. As the CBN wheels suppliers for the knife sharpening industry, we must give the right opinion. Most people think that the diamond is much more harder than CBN, so the diamond is better than CBN, this opinion is not right indeed. Based on common knowledge of physics, everyone knows the diamond is just the “C” element, the knife is of steel. For the steel, the basic element is”Fe”, when diamond grinds the steel, “C” +”Fe” will occur chemical reaction. The products of chemical reactions will cover the surface of diamonds, and block the diamond and knife. With time goes on, this phenomenon is increasing obviouly until the diamond lose the sharpness absolutely, that is, when you start using diamond wheel to grind the steel knife, of course it can work, but as times goes on, the sharpness is worse and worse. Based on our experience, after sharpening 30-50 pieces of knives, the sharpness will come down tremendously. No more than 100 pieces of knives, the diamond wheels lose the sharpness absolutely. Then the life of diamond wheels end. Though the diamond wheels’ life ends, but the diamond grain will not be worn, just the products of chemical reactions will cover the surface of diamonds blocking the grinding part totally. This is why diamond wheels can’t be used for knife sharpening. The conclusion has no connection with the grinder speed, no matter is 100RPM or 3000RPM. CBN and Fe will not creat chemical reaction, so there is no such block problem happens while sharpening using CBN wheels. CBN wheel is sharp during the whole sharpeing process. That is why I recommend CBN wheel for knife sharpening.
