My definition of a survival knife is the knife you have with you when you need it in a survival situation

Very well said sir! This is why I say terms like "one tool option & survival knife" are sales gimmicks. If you are Forced into a situation and only have one tool, any tool/knife.. then that's your OTO or survival knife. You now have to make the best of it. I say.. Always go to the woods prepared and carry multiple tools. Even when practicing. Thanks for the video...

Excellent video. I have always considered a pocket knife to be the basic "survival knife" for the exact reason you stated.

absolutely agree !!! im outdorsmen to , and some time i have freand and relatives with me in woods , and i demonstrate them haw to build simple shelter , make fire and make animal trap with nothing but leatherman wave multitool and smal ferrocerium rod in my pocket . If you get your skils right, you can get out of situation with verry litle tools which is fit in your pocket or on your belt verry easily !!! And obtain base of those skils is only take few lessons and couple of time to practice of them.

I carry a side bag every day, due to the fact I am visually impaired and have to carry some special items to help me see. That bag is with me every time I leave the house. In that bag is a Swiss Army Deluxe Tinker pocket knife, a old style Gerber Multi tool, a ferro rod, packet of strike any where matches and a compass, and a Mini Mag flashlight. Yes its over kill, but you never know. So better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

I watch quite a few ultralight backpacker channels out of interest, most are very good. But it does annoy me when some of them say that you shouldn't ever take a knife, and in some cases even they even mock poeple for taking something like a 3 inch folder and call them rambos. Literally the closest thing they have to a knife is a plastic or titanium spork. Also despite what some of them might say, 2 bandaids a panadol and 30cm of bandage in a baggy is not a first aid kit either.

Very good information sir! I agree with the whole carry the proper gear concept. In all reality, people of our mindset would have to really mess up to find ourselves without the proper resources when or if a situation arises. When you eat and sleep bushcraft, woodcraft and survival, you just don't walk around unprepared. Also, people of our mindset tend to look ahead and avoid situations that would put us in a "survival scenario" ahead of time when possible . With that said, anything can happen to anyone so having the knowledge and skills along with proper resources allows us to provide our basic human needs if that time should come. Well done as always Blackie.

I don't know what part 2 will add cause this is excellent and very well done. I cannot more than agree, I have made a video almost 2 years ago telling that my EDC/ Survival only thing I always have on me is or my swiss army knife or my Opinel. Having a pocket knife is something I learned from my grandpa while ago in the 60's. You put it right on the spot Blackie with the right explanations.

Kukri. Folding saw. Bic lighter. For the heavy stuff. Axe is too heavy, dangerous, plus more effort to process wood. For everything else, a SAK Fieldmaster is a great choice. I’d also have a cold steel recon tanto folder. Ultra strong folding knife.

Keep your mind sharper than your knives. That way you can take advantage of any tools that you have. A Smart person would take the proper tools and redundancies. A sharp mind tries not to get into trouble. But if trouble happens anyway remember this pearl of wisdom from my high school art teacher she Used her own hair as a paintbrush "an artist doesn't blame the tool they blame themselves". What does it matter if you have a top-quality knife or a piece of broken glass as long as it cuts. Don't limit yourself in a survival situation.

Great minds think alike. I stopped using the term survival knife and bushcraft knife for a while now and only talk about camp knives. I call my SAK model soldier (Dutch army issue but basically the same as the SAK Pioneer) my 'last resort' knife. Last resort is my survival knife and it's in my pocket with some other tools like a ferro rod and some fat wood attached with a lanyard to my trousers. I won't loose it unless I loose my trousers. The rest are camp knives or camp tools if you like and depend on where I'm going and what I'm doing. I do have a different SAK for EDC in urban environment (model Spartan or Waiter) with a corkscrew because I'm from Holland and a lot of wine bottles still have corks here. ;) Btw. On canoe trips I do strap stuff to the canoe but my survival kit is strapped to me by a thin line (paracord). Just in case you loose the entire canoe and it goes over a waterfall or something. Of course I have a belt knife on me to cut the cord should it drag me under. That will hardly ever happen because even an open canoe will float, but they could drag you where you don't want to go.

I agree with your reasoning, if I have my pants on I have a knife and a lighter in my pocket. I know how to make and use a bow and drill set even without a knife but it's a heck of a lot easier just to flick my bic, a cutting tool and a fire making tool, everyone should have them on your person at ALL times PERIOD.

Yep, my 'survival' knife is a SAK (camper, I think, it has a saw). Also, I carry a Cold Steel Tokyo Spike neck knife, and a Benchmade Gryptillion folder. These 3 should see me through any problem I might encounter.

Say Heah Blackie, I'm going to name a couple of my Fav's Survival Knives, First and formost is my Ratweiler by Swamp Rat, then my Rodent 7, modified Rodent 6 without the top guard and thinned down, it looks like my Ratnandu but on steriods. My Busse Combat Fussion Meltdown Steel Heart, and my Ergo Steel Heart, yeah my O. K. C. Gen2 SP-53 and even my Potbelly to name a few, but also my Paul'ies Delight that W. C. Custom made for me, Even with these Big Boys, I still like to parley them with a smaller knife, which I attach to my backpack and carry the larger Big Boy on person just incase. Yup, I bring a axe and saw also, Infact, I can carry my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet, my Wicked Tough Saw, and my Modde 6 that look's like my Ratnandu but on steroids on person pretty comfortably. When I head into the woods, I take that serious and I come prepared . I usually set up camp, then from camp I can scout and even overnight with the right combo's. But, if God forbid a emergency, yeah, that's why I carry the Big Boy on me. Wouldn't you agree, bigger is better in that kind of scenario. Take W. C.'s Master Woodman done my way, it's a 7 3/4" blade and 1/4" thick made out of 3V. Now that's what I call a Survival Knife. Sure you could argue, yeah , but with my experience I don't need that big of a knife to survive, perhaps not, but I can chop, dice, cut with it, yeah, I can use it as a small Hatchet and a Knife, that's my point.,,.p

Hell yea lol, IMO a leatherman or a Swiss Army are like sleeper survival knives. For one they're on your person who like 95% of the time compared to a fixed blade. For me i have a SAK Farmer so a blade, saw and an awl.

Having a knife is great but I think the biggest part of this is being prepared for what you are doing. And having the skill set to use the tools you have. Carrying a knife is no good unless you know how to use it. Too many people don't have a clue when they go out to do things
