In this video, I share what I do and don't like about three commonly used pattern companies selling patterns for figure skating costumes.

Thank you for the information. I'm going to try to sew my daughters next dress and am interested in trying the Specialty Sportwear ones. Any chance you could do a video series on creating a dress from scratch? In your header are some beautiful ones with fabric draped down them. Would love to see how this technique is done.

Thanks for the info. I'm an adult figure skater who is considering taking up sewing. Although it may be a long time before I feel confident enough to sew my own skating dress, I have thought about giving it a try someday, as many brands of dresses won't fit my long torso (64"). If I ever get confident enough to try and make my own skating dress, that may help me out a lot!

Once you are ready, I believe Specialty Sportswear offers custom patterns for your measurements. That might be a great way to get a base pattern that you can build your designs from. You will never be sorry you learned to sew, it is such a fun hobby!

As long as you have the right stretch fabric, any of these patterns will fit you fine.

I agree that kwik sew has huge sleeves and wide flowy skirts. Jalie is Canadian and unless you use CM the inches will always be off. CM for those patterns works best. What I don't like about that company, is the panty is always so narrow. It's like wearing thongs. Specialty sportwear has good sleeves, skirts, and panties, but the torso has issues. I combine all three when sewing. Never had an issue after that.

Where is the best place to buy proper fabric for this project?

In the US, I like to order from Blue Moon Fabrics out of LA or Spandex House out of New York. Both of those companies sell solid color spandex tricot in matte or shiny with matching stretch mesh. I recommend purchasing color cards for both the spandex and mesh to make ordering the right color easy.

Do you make the mock up with a cheaper fabric or the spandex /Lycra

I use spandex for my mockups because that gives me the most accurate understanding of alterations I may need to make to the pattern for best fit.

Hi. Do you have any experience with patterns from kwik sew? I am trying one out right now, but have problems with the adjusting the length.

I have made a few dresses with Kwik sew, when I was just starting out. On the pattern I used, the waist sat too high and the sleeves were wide so I lowered the waist, cut the armscye smaller, and narrowed the sleeves. I added the length at the waistline and then shortened the panties up a bit. I tried their raglan skating dress pattern too but just couldn't make it work well without the neck pulling down in a weird way.

@@staceyecklanddesigns7399 thank you for the answer. The dress I’m making is a raglan. And I have adjusted the same things. Only this time the arms are okay, but not great at the biceps, and it is still pulling down at the turtleneck

@@minastefanova5594 I had the same issue, I think it is a problem with the pattern itself. I switched over to Specialty Sportswear's raglan pattern in their tulip line and was much happier. I've used that pattern for quite a few different dress designs in different sizes and was able to get a nice fit. With all Specialty Sportswear patterns, I take a little out of the center of the pattern because I find they run wide and I lower the waist by about an 1". With all new patterns, I sew up a basic sample using the pattern as is and then begin to make my changes. Good Luck!

@@staceyecklanddesigns7399 tanks. I adjusted the line in the raglan front and made the neck higher. That helped. The dress is perfect now. But next time I will try the pattern you recommended. :)
