Some people have complained that I sweat too much and suggested me to wear "quick dry" or "air-wicking" shirts instead of my normal shirts. I guess you never considered what happens when the sweating rate is faster than the drying rate. And obviously you have never been to Malaysia. I hope this video answers your questions. I appreciate your suggestion, but unless you can change the weather and humidity levels in Malaysia, I think I will wear whatever I want to wear. I think the sweat looks a lot worse with this sports/air-wick/dry-fit material. I half-considered reshooting this whole video to avoid that sweaty look, and also the poor AF of the Yongnuo lens, but I decided not to waste another day doing this, so you can see how bad the Yongnuo lens AF performs in video shooting, and at the same time, shut up those who questions my choice of wardrobe. Also, the time is better spent in making the next video, which I hope you guys will find useful and enjoy! More to come, surely. Thanks for being here.

I'm still enjoying the long-form Robin Speaks stuff! But if you prioritise other videos, that's fine with me :) I'm glad the 20mm f/1.4 will exist. Weather sealing fairly compact, and no dreadful AF sound and feel like the Panasonic 20mm f/1.4! I agree the 40-150mm f/4 PRO would be more interesting if it went to 200mm. Hm, the 8-25mm and 40-150mm f/4 PRO lenses would make a love two-lens setup hey?

Hi, Robin. I quit M43 some years ago as I was seduced into the Fuji cameras and I don't regret it as they were marvelous -- BUT: I'm in my late 60's now and back issues have caused me to go back to M43 for the lightweight kit. I used to watch you "back in the day" and I'm glad to see you are still working and using micro four thirds. I've bought a "low mileage" E-M1 (Mark I) and some Panasonic bodies and I'm back in love with M43 again. It's amazing to me how well the E-M1 is still so good 8 years later -- especially pleased considering the firmware updates it received. I was able to sell a very extensive Fuji kit and get back into M43 with an even wider range of lenses without being much out of pocket. Loving it. Thanks and keep up the good work. Subscribed.

I love the podcast format for these miscellaneous topics, I listen ROBINSPEAKS while working or doing chores, which is a more passive way to watch your content. The videos with wisdom and tutorials in it, I tend to watch those over and over again as I try to learn or master something. I think I’ll be sad if you stop I’d doing ROBINSPEAKS, but I understand that it might not be the content you want to create. But I love the more informal topics and the behind the scenes kind of discussions on your channel.

Hi Robin. I am going to buy 20mm f1.4 to replace both 17mm and 25mm f1.8. Although I prefer the 35mm equiv. the 17mm has serious issues with ghosting when there is strong light at night. I hope 20mm will not have such issues and also paired with my em5.3 will be a good wr combo. I would also prefer a mk2 version of 17 25 45 with wr and improvements rather than new 20mm

If it’s as good as P20 but focuses as fast as O25 f1.7. I think the 20mm could be interesting. On the 40-150 I agree with you, every m43 shooter has that focal length in two flavors. Plus 12-100 already covers most of that range at f4, not the priority as you said.

Thanks, Robin! Completely agree on the idea/request to get a WEATHERPROOF mark II version of the premium primes! And the second idea of having a logical extension of a valuable telephoto zoom up to 250/300 ... F4 -- f8 fullframe equivalent -- pro lenses? Yes, precious. I'm sure some will buy them. Not me. If such slow lenses are the future of Olympus, I'm not buying. I'm holding out with my 2.8 pro lenses in hopes of a faster sensor with more resolution. But, I'm about ready to spend more money, carry more weight, and move on. I agree with all you said here about the new lenses. They are nice to have, the 40-150 is the most interesting. But I agree they should've made it a little different to what's already out there in m43-land. I would like the 9-18 f4-5.6 to be refreshed - the design has not aged well. They could repackage it, yet keep it small, that could be a good option for vloggers perhaps. I do hope their wow camera will WOW us all.

Hi Robin, your enthusiasm and earnestness was manifest. Excellent discussion and thank you for voicing forthright opinions. I acknowledge I may be in a minority group of potential customers for OMD Solutions as I am not invested in the micro four thirds system but I would be keen on both these lenses, especially the 20mm f 1.4. Pair this with the 40-150 f/4 and ,excepting Macro, my needs would be covered . Exceeded actually. I also wouldn't mind the existing small affordable variable aperture 40-150 you mentioned, paired with the 20mm f1.4 lens. I value compactness and low weight so as to be very portable ( for multi-day hiking or "tramping" as we term it in my country) . Aside from optical quality I want my gear to be very enjoyable to use. I have been considering the EM 10 and EM 5 bodies due to their small size, weight and yet good ergonomics. It would be great for me if the future body you mentioned could also be small and light in weight. Cheers.

Hi Robin, I totally agree with you about the new lenses. And I am afraid that the MFT System needs a new sensor like water in the desert. It is the thing with the ISO and dynamic range. The new full frame cameras are every day closer to the MFT cameras in size and price, and they are improbing the IBIS too. Maybe the new stacked sensor from Sony could help to create a supercamera for MFT. Thanks for your channel and videos!!
@joeltunnah
@joeltunnah 2 жыл бұрын
There’s nothing wrong with the dynamic range of the current 20mp sensor, and for extremely contrasty scenes there are in-camera tools like HDR and bracketing. Yes FF bodies are similar in size, but their equivalent aperture lenses are much bigger, heavier, and more expensive than MFT.

@@JavierGutierrez-yl2fs they actually have the same or very similar noise at the same exposure. It’s just that for an 8x10 print for example you magnify the 35mm format image 59.7x. For MFT you need to magnify it 229.4x for the same 8x10. If you printed it at the same magnification, it would have identical noise, in this case 2x2.5, which yes is tiny, I understand. But if the MFT has a 2 stop faster lens, it will match the 35mm for noise in the 8x10 print. f/1.2 lenses for FF are very big and very expensive.

Hey Robin, thanks for your thoughts. I love the 20mm Panasonic Pancake and shoot most of my personal pictures with this lens. It's not too wide for nice looking portraits but also not as narrow as a 25mm when you are out and about shooting on the street. Bear in mind that many older film cameras with fixed lenses had lenses with 40mm or 45mm focal length, so it is a kind of classical focal length in it's own right. But the Pana lens showing it's age now, the autofocus is sometimes slow and always loud, on Pana cameras there is no continuous AF and the video AF performance is really bad. So I think I will buy the Olympus 20mm 1.4 on first day, and I think I may not be the only one 😃
@caw25sha

A standard lens (ie neither wide angle or telephoto) for any format is the diagonal distance between corners of the sensor or film frame. On 35mm this is 43.2mm so a 40mm or 45mm lens is closer to standard than the usual 50mm. On MFT it's 21.6mm so 20mm is closer than 25mm. I have the Olympus 25mm f1.8 which is really nice but I think I might also upgrade to the 20mm. (If you want to work out the standard focal length for a format find the dimensions in mm and use Pythagoras: "The square on the hypotenuse is equal to ... etc".)

Thanks for your thoughts Robin. Couldn't agree more. The 40-150 is not really addressing a gap instead it's overlap. If you really want to to go Tele there is the 100-400. Why should I go for a 40-150 f4? Instead combining the 12-40 f2.8 with the 35-100 f2.8 Panasonic + 100-400. (or directly going for the 12-100 f4). But this is only covering my usage of course: others may have different needs. 2nd agreement regarding announcements....

Hi Robin. It’s great to see you outside looking fit and happy! These new lenses will be a perfect match for the EM-5. The f/2.8 zooms are front-heavy on the EM-5 and better suited to the EM-1. The f/1.8 primes aren’t weather sealed, but do pair well with the EM-10 and PEN. So the f/4 zooms and a new series of f/1.4 primes are made for adventure with the EM-5, and I think the chosen focal lengths are perfect. At this stage it’s a good strategy for OMDS to announce product releases in advance to build confidence in the brand. It is already clear the emphasis is on high quality, small size and light weight. OMDS is playing to its strengths.

I agree with you, Robin. These announced lenses are nice but not a high priority for me. 40-150mm, without any teleconverter, is right in the middle between landscape and wildlife, and doesn't cover enough of my typical usage, though it could be quite nice on the EM5 III. I already have a 25mm prime, that I don't use very often. Hopefully the other super telephoto zooms on the roadmap, such as a possible 50-200mm f/2.8 that has appeared in a recent Olympus survey, will be announced by next year and be more relevant to my needs. The 20mm f1.4 could be a very interesting lens if you didn't already own a fast prime in that range. If it is a lot smaller than the 17.5 f1.2 that could also make it worth thinking about depending on the price. The 40-150 could be a good lens to pair with the 8-25 f4 if it is truly a smaller and much lighter lens than the 2.8 version. To be honest I've been underwhelmed with the weight savings of the f4 versions so far. Also, I would like to see the lens in reality. When the 8-25 f4 was first shown in pictures I remember getting the impression that it would be a lot smaller than it ended up being when I saw it in real life reviews. Hopefully this time the pictures are more accurate.

Misplaced priority is a good way to put it. The 12mm f2 is one of the most popular lenses, and with the whole world being crazy into vlogging these days I really think a compact 8mm or 10mm fast prime would be really sought after, especially considering there is no ultra-wide fast prime for m4/3 available with autofocus…Only manual 3rd party. I think they are missing out on that opportunity.

Hey Robin, thought I would make the point this new line could very well allow discounting on the original line opening up room for an f1.4 line. Also note that if the goal is to aim for small lenses, increasing focal range substantially would undermine the size goal. It also makes sense to give the consumers clear choices (40-150 f2.8 vs 40-150 f4) as opposed to complicated choices where increased focal lengths would increase price and make for a less clear decision.

Hey Robin, I second your musings about the misplaced priorities! I would also like to have weather sealed version of the 1.8 lenses, and your suggestions are exactly what I would've liked to see at this point in time. And it would look much better for a prospective new OMD user to have the full lens range weather sealed, including the lower-budget options. That said, the next E-M10 should also be weather sealed (maybe less perfect than the more expensive models).

I'm glad there's going to be a 20mm f1.4 Pro. My first Olympus (135/35mm format) came with a 42mm lens, and I used only that lens when I was starting out. I feel that lenses with the angle of view of the 40ish focal length on the 135 format are really not all that common, 35mm and 50mm are much more common. For me I feel that the view is not so compressed like the 50mm (or 25mm M4/3) or as wide as the 35mm (or 17mm M4/3). For me it feels like a "just right" focal length. I also like that it's the Pro version with weather sealing. That's very helpful where I live. I do have other lenses with a similar angle of view, two Olympus, a 42mm f2.8 and 40mm f2.8 and a 43mm f1.9, but none of them are weather sealed. I'd be curious about the character the 20mm f1.4 has since all three of my 40ish lenses render differently, but I've liked the look from all the Olympus Pro primes I've seen so far, so I'm looking forward I'm a little surprised Olympus took as long as they did to come out with the 20mm prime because they did a lot of lenses with the 40ish mm length long time ago However, I really do agree that I still think they should be spending time refreshing the Premium lenses. I could have used some weather sealing on the small primes like the 17 mm f1.8 or the 25 mm f1.8. For my use, I also feel the MF clutch would also be helpful on 25 mm f1.8 or the 30mm macro. Light, compact, and weathersealed lenses would be really helpful for a "go anywhere" camera. This is why my Olympus TG-6 gets so much use! I really look forward to the Robin Speaks series, and I always get excited when I see a new episode. I feel as though even if I watched many of your videos, I still learn more about your philosophy when you have the Robin Speaks series. I also learn more about taking photos than I do from many longer podcast format things I listen to or watch

12-100 F4 is single lens for all application. But not enough for additional use. Especially when shooting buildings because 12 mm is too narrow. 8-25 F4 + 40-150 F4 although it uses 2 lenses, but it covers more applications.

The 20nn f/14 will be a spectacular lens, but the main reason it won't sell in large numbers is because there are too many Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 lenses floating around. This is one of the top selling M4/3 lenses in existence, and very few people who own this lens will spend another $1,000 to upgrade from f/1.7 to f/1.4. The 40-150mm f/4.0 lens will be a huge hit, especially if it is priced at $1,000 or less, and it is as small as it looks in the rendering. The 40-150mm f.2,8 is outstanding, but it is also a huge and expensive beast of a lens (880 grams and $1,500). This new lens fills the gap beautifully between the kit tele zoom lens and the ultimate tele zoom lens.

I think the new company has been under a lot of scrutiny from "influencers" who want to know if they are committed to carrying on the Olympus tradition. By advertising the projects in progress they can show that, and hopefully retain some market share. The 20mm f1.4 should be a welcome addition for people like me who want a fast prime and don't own the 17mm f1.8 or 25 f1.8. It is close enough to those focal lengths to substitute for them. The f4 40-150 pro. might be a way to offer a "new lens" by adding weather sealing and a metal lens mount ring to an old design and retain the small size and a lower price point without having to do a lot of R&D. I've been using Olympus cameras since the 70's and always liked their small size and quality construction.

Sir, you have the best explanations for using the Olympus cameras. I just recently upgraded to an EM-1 Mark 3 and picked up a few used pro Lenses, 8mm Fisheye Pro, 17mm f/1.2, and a 40-150 f/2.8. I'm trying to learn some things about how to use HDR, HH High-Res, and Live Comp/Live Bulb. I really wish that Olympus would make a 12mm f/1.2 or something like that. It would be really nice for landscape photos and star shots.

Hahahaha, I was starting to write 50-200 should be there, just as you were saying it in the video. Right on brother, the 40-150 f2.8 is not long enough, and it would have been so nice to get to 200mm in a pro lens. They sure messed up! They need to make the PEN F! Make it more budget friendly. Olympus needs to have a rangefinder styled body! The more I think about it they only need 3 cameras. But they have to get on it. The current line up of cameras and the price points make no sense. E-m1x, the Idea stays the same... -Big Body. -Dual card slots -dual batteries -portrait and landscape shutter and button layouts. - Newest (software) features -Best sensor available(next model (mark ii) has to update sensor. Pen F. -Will be one sensor behind the e-m1x ii. (Pen F ii would be the current 20mp Phase sensor in the m1ii/iii/1x/m5iii). -Mostly the same (software) features as the same gen e-m1x that comes out. So the only feature held out vs the m1xii would be if it was sensor related. -Same basic body design as the Pen F, with small tweaks to grips and such. -Exposure comp dial stays, and (maybe) an added ISO dial with auto option, art dial stays(I don't care about this, hut many people seem to like it). -Mic jack stays. -Flip over top screen. (Photographers usually don't prefer side flip, and vlogger need front facing, top flip allows both)!! -Weather sealed, but made of high grade plastic. This can help keep it more toward the current e-m5 price point. -THIS IS IMPORTANT...they need to allow it to add a battery grip and added battery pack (like e-m1 i/ii/iii and e-m5 i/ii/(removed option from e-m5iii). This battery pack feature allows 2 things for consumers and one thing for OM digital. For customers -it allows (like the e-m5 i and ii) to turn your semi pro cam into a back-up pro cam. -allows you to have a tiny (almost) pocket travel camera and semi (to full) professional use camera in one package. For OM digital... -another product to sell, and doesn't take as much money to make this part and sell vs technical advancing cameras and still make a profit. Many camera people buy all options for their camera, whether it will be used or not, so keeping this option is cheap to develop and easy to market along and probably over half the camera buyers would also purchase this item, if available. E-m10....keep this camera exactly b the same, just update the sensor or grip, screen, evf. Not necessarily every generation upgrade all, but one or two per generation. Make incremental changes over the generations, just to stay relevant.

It is great seeing outside. You look so happy. I am looking forward to buying both the 20/1.4 and the 40-140/4.0. I do own all the F1.2 primes and love them. I can see the 20/1.4 taking the place of both the 17/1.2 and the 25/1.2 when I want to go light weight. Still I would love to see a 10/1.4 for night time astro-landscape photography. I also own the 12-40/2.8 and the 40-150/2.8 and love them. I got the 12-100/4.0 and is a great one zoom solution but do find the 100mm focal length limiting. I also own the 12-45/4.0 and like it but only use it when on family outings. (yes! I have a lens addiction) I can see the 40-150/4.0 being paired up with the 12-45/4.0 to make a duo that is smaller, better balanced and better image quality than the 12-100/4.0 Still I would rather see a 25-150/4.0 to pair up with the 8-25/4.0. Once you get above 150mm lenses start to get big, even at f4.0. I do see that there are two more telephoto zoom lenses. I am guessing one is going to be a 50-200/2.8 IS lens that will take the teleconverters and will be very big and expensive. The other will be a 50-250/4.0 IS lens. It also looks like just maybe the 100 Macro has the possibility of being a 75-150 Macro Zoom, which would really be unique. Still it is nice to know that OMDS have products in development. I can see the "wow" camera being a very expensive camera using a BSI Stacked sensor and either a new image processor or a dual processor. Just look at the pricing of the Sony A1, Nikon Z9 and the Canon R3. If the OMDS "wow" camera is half their pricing it will still be very expensive. I can hear people complaining already. :-)

I just wanted to let you know that on the German OMD site you can see 2 green bars indicating new zoom lenses (not yet with details) where the green bar goes from 50 to somewhere 200+mm - so there is hope. And if the difference will be size I could see myself bying both. We Olympus fans do have smaller bodies like a PenF or EM10MkII-IV where a 40-150 in smaller size might be a great fit, the larger 50-200 (or more ??) might be best for a EM5 with a grip or even bigger

Everyone loves to blame the lens for AF issues in reviews and forums, but it's the body that decides where to focus and gives the lens the motor commands to get there. Other than sharpness or light transmission or other optical issues that might make things more difficult for the sensor to see the image clearly, I'm not sure how the lens can ever be the problem with AF. I think the body was on the wrong focus mode, or the focus points were away from his face. Am I overlooking something? Thanks for the video, Robin. Good stuff as always.

@@tuber2kh the Yongnuo lens AF is poor in video. The miss focus NEVER happened when I used Olympus lenses. Everything (settings) is the same. The only variable is the lens. It was not a one time thing. Did you watch the whole video? It went out of focus (briefly) more than 10 times. But only briefly, and it went in back to focus again. Which suggests, the focusing setting was CORRECT considering MOST of the video is in focus. The lens is poor and unreliable. That's the only conclusion drawn here. Don't blame the camera.

My thoughts are they could have made the telephoto at the starting point of 45mm and also make it a bit longer on the telephoto end. Perhaps a 45-180 or 200. Then they could make a Mark II of the 45mm. However since they kept to the 40-150mm, they could have made a 40mm f/1.4. For me it would be a no brainer, I would probably buy both the 40-150mm f/4 and the 40mm f/1.4 because I love the 40mm wide angle view for portraits a little better than the 45mm. I'm still getting the 40-150mm f/4. I think the reason why they are making a 20mm is because there is some who like the in between of 35 and 50mm equivalent but Lumix has that covered. However it is a cheap lens so I can see the value of Olympus making a higher end lens for that focal length. On a side note, for a moment my brain thought Olympus was releasing a 40mm. I don't know what happened but I realized that after I posted a comment. Then I quickly deleted it. Lol.

I might consider that 40-150 f4 if it is more little and cheaper than the f2.8 version, since I have the "poor man" 40-150 lens and it is already asking for a replacement. But a 20mm f4, what are they thinking on? The Lumix 20mm f1.7 is optically excellent and tiny, is weather sealing alone a reason to get the new Olympus lens? I am with you that a weather sealed version of the Zuiko 17mm f1.8 would be much better, I would definitively sell my great but huge Sigma 16mm f1.4 to get it.

On Olympus's lens chart some lenses have a light grey line stretching out to the focal length including a teleconverter. The 40-150 f2.8 has this but the f4.0 doesn't. Not sure why but I think with the x2 teleconverter you lose 2 stops so would be down to a maximum aperture of f8 which I don't think many people would be happy with.

@@caw25sha I hear you and I noticed that too. BUT I really don't think the OG 40-150 is that big (just a little heavy) and most of my shots are between f4 and f8 anyway. I'm moderately excited about the 20mm f1.4. It's my "Goldilocks" focal length, and I love the optical qualities of the Panasonic 20mm f1.7, but the focus is too slow, especially in low light. I've been hoping for an update with fast, quiet focus for a long time. Weather sealing would be a nice bonus, but not required for my purposes. One of the consequences of having a robust line of lenses along with Panasonic and their lines of lenses it gets hard to find where you need improvements. The older f/1.8 lenses I agree is something they should work on. The only real area where the lens line up is weak is in the exotics, which don't tend to sell well. Things like the tilt-shift lenses and fast long telephotos, but those tend to be very expensive. Another one I'd like to see is an updated 40-150 f/2.8.

I'm assuming the 20mm has the clutch even though you can't tell for sure? Although for personal reasons I'd like the 20mm to be 17mm, it makes sense as there's already f1.2 and f1.8 versions of both 17mm and 25mm (I think, can never remember the focal lengths of the f1.2 lenses), so it would be redundant in that sense and using the intermediate focal ratio with an intermediate focal length gives lovers of both 17 and 25 a good compromise lens. It has the weather sealing of the f1.2 but with some the compactness of the f1.8, while also being a (compromised) replacement for both 17mm and 25mm lenses (it's a few mm short of "standard" and a few mm long of "street" but for many will be a usable version of both I guess?). I can see the thinking from a business sense. Given the new "Olympus" seem committed to compact lenses, and the deliberately different focal length, this lens might actually be a sign that they intend to weather seal the old versions. Even if it just means the old versions aren't going anywhere, that's not a bad thing IMHO... Personally I have the Pan 20 1.7 already and want something just a little wider, so have had my eye on the Oly 17 1.8 for years. Would've liked this new 20mm to be 17mm, but now I've thought about it even if it was I'll still probably get the older f1.8, as it already has the clutch (which the 20mm might not even have!) and still looks quite a bit smaller than the 20mm (from what the pictures show). And weather sealing isn't the most important thing to me, I'm just a shit amateur not a pro lol 😀

As soon as I saw the announcement, I had exactly the same thought (or dream) of a 50-250mm f/4 weather sealed lens. Hopefully next time! The 20mm f/1.4 might be a tough sell, with the venerable Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 being really good in terms of sharpness and rendering, and maybe half the price. I'm sure the 1.4 will have blazing fast AF, and great C-AF performance, so that should excite the videographers, but I'm not sure it'll be a big hit overall. I entirely agree with you that OM Digital Solutions should improve their big selling f/1.8 primes with weather sealing (I bought the 12-50mm kit lens specifically because it was splash proof, to use in rain when I don't want to take my non-weather sealed primes out of the camera bag), and I'd like to see them getting new coatings to further improve flare and ghosting resistance. It wouldn't make them much profit, but it would be awesome if they could weather seal the 14-42 EZ and 40-150 R too :)

The 40-150mm f/4 makes sense to me as a landscape photographer when compared to the existing options, especially if it will work with the 1.4x convertor. A 50-250 zoom is a different product altogether and by all accounts PanaLeica already did a pretty good job of producing one if you want that range. Or is it heretical to suggest using Panasonic lenses on here? I'd also consider buying the 20mm f/1.4 as an upgrade to my Panasonic 25mm f/1.7. It's nicely in-between the traditional 50mm and 35mm perspectives (on 35mm film) and with weather sealing and f/1.4 it would be a very handy fast prime option to add to a two zoom travel kit. The WOW thing will have to be a new sensor with lots of computational photography features that can't be done economically

Interesting thoughts, and I agree with much of what you say. I'm not surprised you would have preferred a macro lens, since you are an active and very good macro shooter. The "trinity" or whatever of f/4 lenses... the 8-25, the 12-45, and now the 40-150... * I own the 12-45 f/4. To me, there is too much overlap between this and the 8-25 f/4, and I won't buy both. * Because I own the 40-150 f/2.8, I struggle with the thought of buying the f/4 version. Perhaps... if it is really small and comes with IS, but someone suggested the 40-150 f/4 will not have IS... * With the 12-45 f/4 (as well as the 12-100 f/4), to me, a 50-200 or 50-250 f/4 with IS would have been more interesting. * Still, I think that these new f/4 lenses could be of interest to those who do not already own the f/2.8 lenses. What about the 20 mm f/1.4? This is very close to a normal lens for the m43 format -- defined as the diagonal of the sensor (is it 21 mm or so that is the normal?) What about the Pana 20mm f/1.7? * I used to own the Pana, and I loved it. * However, it had really, really slow AF, so I think there is room for a new 20mm * The Pana lens gave a blueish color on my Oly cameras, so Oly lenses will probably give better color. * I think f/1.4 is interesting OK, personally, I have some Oly 1.8 lenses in the same focal range (17 mm, 25mm) as well as the 25 mm 1.2, so for me personally, I don't see the big need. But it would perhaps be very nice if there was a Pen F II?
