It's refreshing how you acknowledge your lack of knowledge on this subject. It's relatable in my opinion and i know you're the best when it comes to fixing behavior but i like your openness to learning about new things and how you don't pretend to know.

My two large senior bullies get glucosamine supplements for their joints and they play like puppies, although not as long because they tire out more easily. One of my seniors also gets a probiotic supplement because she has a touchy digestive system. My younger dog, a cattle dog mix, tends to have a dry coat, so she gets salmon oil which makes a big difference in her skin and coat. They all are on a quality diet with limited treats. So far, so good!

I am so glad you brought up CBD in this Video. Our boxer named Molly (now passed on) slipped on the hardwood floor and blew out her knee. Rushed her to the vet. They suggested knee surgery and recommended both knees should be replaced. The estimated cost was $12k. She was seven years old at the time, the recovery for her would have been very difficult. We decided to wait and try alternative methods. The method that worked the best for her was CBD. It was like she was a puppy again! We never did go through with the surgery, we didn’t want to put her through this. She went on to live her life out without the surgery and was a very active happy dog up until she passed away. We do still miss her 😢

Fish oil is an INCREDIBLE supplement, even the dogs with the most thick fur can see a significant difference after long term use! On top of that I use hemp fibre daily for digestion and supplements for joints (my dog jumps like a maniac so I'm trying to make sure there aren't any problems later on in his life). His diet also has lots of variety, canned food with fruits and vegetables, fresh veggies and fruits, steamed meat etc. I got my dog from a shelter, he had dark bloody spots under his eyes, very coarse fur, and it all got solved within a month.

My dog has such a sensitive stomach that most supplements make him nauseous. Things that you would think would not make him sick do, so I stopped giving him most. This is one of the reasons I feed him high quality raw bones, organs and muscle. He is getting good fat, good protein and great minerals.The green food that I prefer for my dog is marine phytoplankton, which is superior to chlorella. He gets omega 3 in that as well. Fish oil makes him sick, so marine phytoplankton is a good alternative. That's all he gets. With a HIGH quality diet they don't really need a bunch of supplements.
@annaburns53822 жыл бұрын
@SmokingHotNeedles I tried CBD oil on my dog. It made him sick, like everything else. Look into marine phytoplankton. They get omega 3's from it and it increase ATP. My dog does ok with that. I also give it to my kitties. Glucosamine and MSM made my dog sick. Literally almost everything makes him sick. Glad your dog is doing well.

I get it if ppl can't afford to feed their dogs high quality food to give supplements, but what annoys me is that there are people who give supplements to their dog even when they eat all sorts of berries, veggies, raw meats, and organ meats. Supplements are supplements for a reason. Btw avoid cottonseed. Cottonseed disrupts the reproductive system. Some dogs have less puppies due to vitamin supplements.
@rotten22092 жыл бұрын
"Supplement" doesn't just mean vitamins. Chondroiton and glucosamine help with cartilage. Oils like Olive,coconut and salmon all help with skin and coat. Cbd helps with relaxation and 'pain'. Etc... Supplement is anything you 'supplement' your pets diet with. None of the "supplements" I listed are in most kibble or can. They do have joint specific food with Chon and Gluc so yes, there would be no reason to supplement more if using that food.

I have a 5 month old great dane puppy and I supplement his kibble every day with fish oil (Nordic Naturals), a raw local egg with shell, and a big scoop of homemade stew (ground turkey, liver, lots of kale and other vegs like sweet potato, beans, peppers, mushrooms, carrots, squash, etc. I also put in fresh ginger, flaxseed, and fruit like blueberries, apples, pears, and canned tomatoes. And a small amount of cooked brown rice. All the vegs are shredded up in a food processor so it cooks up in no time. I freeze the stew in quart bags and thaw as needed. He loves it, and it doesn't upset his stomach (danes are prone to gastric issues). Super soft coat, happy boy. Like most puppies I guess, but time will tell if it makes a big difference in his health and lifespan. I'm hoping.....

A tip: Dogs synthesize Vitamin C in their own body, and when young they do not need Vitamin C from diet. BUT, as dogs get older, this process with vitamin C synthesizing slows down, so older dogs will benefit from having some fruits and veggies with vitamin C. I feed my 8,5 year old dog golden retriever spinach, kale, broccoli, some tomatoes and paprika every week, just mush it up with his food. Also, canned sardines are great snacks for dogs (lots of Omega 3).

This is an important conversation and I see plenty of overlap with behavior. A dog’s diet can directly impact their behavior and state. Diets high in doggy junk food can lead to inattentiveness and hyperactivity and, overall, don’t help our case in eradicating problem behaviors.

My last dog had hip dysplasia and arthritis, at 10, she could barely walk, I put her on mainly raw diet, grain free, added green lipped mussels which helped, added home made bone broth, fish sticks, herbs, fresh turmeric and ginger for their anti inflammatory properties and cbd oil. Within 4 days of giving cbd, her back paw unsiezed. Her mobility improved, walks increased and she lived another 4 happy years until she passed from cancer. Even then the vets were surprised at how long she lived with cancer. Diet is so important to all systems. If giving supplements to yourself or your dog, I would advise that they come from whole food sources and not synthetic ones that the body can't always recognise and process.

I’m starting to stray away from using treats myself, and using other rewards in the environment, or even doing a quick little jog with my pup when he is walking politely by my hip. Although I don’t use leash corrections, leash tension is a thing so there is truly no such thing as only positive reinforcement. That being said, treats are a double edge sword because a lot of people become reliant on them, and if not implemented properly they can be confusing for the dog. But I am seeing great success without having to use leash corrections, and although I use treats when introducing new behaviors, I always try to find a way to make myself more interesting than the environment, and cueing behaviors before any threshold is passed. Rewarding a dog is not always about using treats, but 99% of “purely positive” trainers cannot see past that and properly implement rewards which are subtle. For example, you don’t enter the park until you sit and look up at me. No bedroom until you wait my desired duration of time. No dinner until you leave it and show the self control to earn yourself the meal. No walking forward until leash tension resolves or I get a look cue...etc.

Natural supplements are great. As a dog walker, I recommend the following to my clients: Glucosamine and Chondroitin for joints and turmeric as that is a powerful anti-inflammatory. I also recommend Omega too. For urinary health, I recommend cranberry pills or even just feeding cranberries if the dog will eat them. Vitamin C is also good to help treat bladder infections. For constipation relief, I recommend pumpkin but for diarrhea, I prefer yogurt as that is a great probiotic and good for gut health.

For kennel cough, so many rush to the vet but if the dog is not sick, i.e. not lethargic, no fever, is eating and drinking but just has the nasty cough and spitting up white foam, I treat with colloidal silver, honey and a cold mist dehumidifier. Colloidal silver is amazing - very powerful.

@SmokingHotNeedles I feel a raw diet to my dog but, because she is a senior who was fed cooked chicken thighs by my father for 5 years until he passed, I now supplement with psyllium fibre, organ meat and offal because she used to suffer from chronic constipation because of a lack of moisture in her diet.

Unless you live out in the middle of nowhere & you don't use chemicals on anything outside, probably not so good. I supplement my pups dinner with either olive oil, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar or salmon oil. No more than half a teaspoon for his current weight of less than 50lbs. No, not all at once either. I do one each evening in rotation. These are mainly for his skin and coat as he gets dry skin. They have done a great job with that. The ACV is in my pets main water source. It supposedly helps with multiple things like coat, flea prevention(🤷♂️), allergies and gastrointestinal support.

I also believe that kibble food is dead. It can sit on the counter for years and still be "fresh" and fed to a dog. My dogs have a quality kibble based diet with added real food that would actually go bad on the counter in a few hours or days. Real FRESH live food. They eat whole chicken necks raw or even turkey necks for the larger dogs, raw turkey oatmeal meat loaf, raw veggies and one will peel and eat a banana. Now if the vet says to add something I will but otherwise lots of fresh food, fresh air, sunshine and if they want to dig up some grubs in the yard and eat them I let them. Animals know what they need.

Sodium is bad for dogs. Their kidneys can only handle very small amounts. So small that they usually get by without supplements. The himalayan salt contains some other minerals, but that's so little that there's not even a measurable benefit for human consumption. It just looks pretty. Glucosamine is excellent. I have this mix with MSM and vitamins and oither minerals. Yoghurt or buttermilk is good, if the dog is not lactose intolerant. They've got probiotics. Lots of dogs are intolerant, lots of dogs aren't. Sheepfat is great, I've never gone a day without it for my dog. Makes the fur nice and soft. Garlic, in small amounts, is a good deterrent for parasites. So in winter-months that's usually enough to get by without catching lice, depending on how cold the winters get for you. I get sheep-fat with garlic mixed in, and just tap a little bit over their food. There's a study that says garlic is toxic for dogs. They tested huge amounts for long periods. Don't worry about it. The best thing for your dog's teeth is not giving it anything with sugars. Plain and simple. Hard pressed kibble are good too, because they scrape some plaque from the teeth. And bones to get the really bad stuff off.

We used CBD to with good results on our 12 year old black lab who had arthritis. The key thing from our search was to ensure that you are buying CBD and not hemp oil. If the price looks too good to be true, read the label closely. One other thing I learned from a breeder here on youtube called 1st508th Airborne is that you can use frozen carrots as a treat that will help clean off your dog's teeth. Haven't implemented it myself, but it seems like a decent idea.

If you feed a good diet and use supplements which aren’t needed, a vet told me you just end up with expensive pee. I feel if you are trying a supplement and seeing a difference with what you are targeting, then stick with it. I have horses and the supplement and feeding propaganda is huge and changes a lot and can be very,very expensive and confusing. I haven’t ventured into the dog supplement world so much. My experience is that Joel is right about oils. I feed a rice bran oil based product to my horse, will try fish oil for my dog. Am enjoying reading what everyone does and what has helped in the comments.

Yes to fish oil, glucosamine cbd. Have used them on an elderly arthritic dog to good effect. Also found gelatine and collagen helpful with the above. No to salt or bicarbonate as I have always been told high levels of sodium not good for dogs and they will swallow it when teeth cleaning. Bones are the best for teeth cleaning but can upset some dogs so I have used toothbrush with doggy toothpaste with some dogs. Chlorella is a funny one. It makes me really nauseous even to the point of being sick so I wouldn’t feed it to my dog. Usually give a spoonful of cooked veggies like broccoli from our evening meal though.

Much like humans, animals are a big business and the supplements marketed to us are not only daunting but impossible to weed out what actually works and what doesn't. None are certified by the FDA so the businesses that sell these supplements can virtually say and put in whatever they think will make them money. Food is the best way to get the proper nutrients. If food is lacking then perhaps a well researched multi vitamin might suffice but the focus should be a healthy balanced diet. Remember that anything not regulated in business will never be in your best interest only their's. The only protection you have is choice. Become better educated and then think for yourself and question everything ✌🏽❤️

I give my 15 year old boy who suffers from kidney disease and heart failure a B50 complex supplement and half a teaspoon of crushed eggshells (eggshell is a phosphorus binder) with each of his home cooked meals (home cooked meals, to my opinion, are imperative for dogs with kidney disease). To the young members of the pack I provide salmon oil on a daily basis, one teaspoon of olive oil twice a week and once or twice a week one tea spoon of kefir (as probiotic). Only time will tell if the regime I follow is a successful one but so far my fury companions are as healthy as bulls (apart from the 15 year old one whose condition is due to his hereditary predisposition towards heart failure).

Prior to adopting my 7-year-old Sibe husky, I did a lot of research on raw feeding and really wanted to have him on raw. However, he was not interested. He enjoyed raw chicken feet and necks but turns out he was sensitive to it. It was expensive and time-consuming (if made at home). Instead, I buy a mid-range kibble brand (Taste of the Wild) to as a base and supplement it with high-end air-dried or freeze-dried (Ziwi Peak, K9), raw eggs, canned sardines or mackerel (water, no added salt), lactose-free yogurt, frozen blueberries, baby purees (organic, no added nasties, veggies and fruit suitable for dogs), raw or lightly browned beef mince. For supplements, he gets an all-rounder booster and a lot on omegas 3/6/9 (fish oil, hemp oil, chondroitin, glucosamine, manganese). He is old and had a prior injury so I want to give him as much support as possible. He is on a rotation of different products (One ingredient treat (fish skins chews, fish puffs, dehydrated green-lipped mussel), 4CYTE Oral Joint Supplement, Pernaease Powder, Bark Naturals Omega + Coconut. He is active and bouncy as a puppy and gets at least 2 hours of outdoor activity. I think without these supplements he would have had a lot more flare-ups in his shoulder.

Just feed a species-appropriate diet!...and no unfortunately that doesn't include kibble or canned food. Then very little supplements are necessary, but become dependent upon the specific dog and situation...such as an active/working dog needing more joint-supportive supplements. Fish oil is very likely to become unstable/rancid due to processing and all it goes through before getting into the body of your dog. Yes, healthy fats and oils are an essential part of a healthy diet, but it seems to be much safer to provide those through whole food sources such as sardines, salmon, etc.
@artemis666x2 жыл бұрын
Didn't know that fish oil became rancid. If you do buy it, I'm assuming smaller bottles are better?
@heidih22602 жыл бұрын
@@artemis666x Personally I wouldn't buy fish oil. If you look into the processing it is poorly managed from the beginning and then often put in bottles exposed to oxygen with each pump or heat during stocking and transport. EPA & DHA are just too sensitive to retain their integrity without going rancid and causing more damage then good. Adding canned sardines or salmon to your dog's diet is closer to how dogs would have gotten fish and the accompanying oils in their natural state. The only product I have found outside of feeding a fatty fish is Mercola Krill Oil for dogs. They take precaution from the very beginning to avoid oxidation (which causes rancidity) and krill contain more naturally occuring antioxidants which help fight oxidation. Do some research and you'll see what I mean ;)
@lanah74712 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by a species-appropriate diet? Some many interpret this as raw or home-cooked. Not everyone can afford this. Kibble and canned food have come a long way (Ziwi Peak, K9) are air-dried and balanced. Again, not everyone can afford the high-end kibble. I agree, supplement with whole foods where possible. I use a mid-range kibble, topped with air-dried or freeze-dried food, whole food sources (canned sardines, mackerel, raw eggs, yogurt, frozen berries) and still give my dog supplements. He is entering senior years and is an active husky so I want him to get the nutrient and support he needs.

For those of us that want to home cook for our dogs, I've been very happy with BalanceIt. They have a menu creator where you can choose ingredients and it will tell you how much of each they need. I have big dogs so they get half kibble and half home cooked, and this way I can be sure their home cooked food is still nutritionally balanced. My 16 month old large pit mix has not so great joints, so I have him on a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement as well as keeping him lean and well exercised. I have a toothbrush and toothpaste for them and I always forget to brush their teeth 😕

I think supplements have there place, maybe for a specific problem, but I believe get the diet right and all is good, I make my own raw food every month for my border collie and mince it all up with a meat grinder 10 to 12 percent bone, muscle meat, hearts, liver, kidneys, tripe. Testicles and brain when I can get them, fruit and veg added as well and I add fish twice a week. Everyone he meets they say doesn’t he look lovely and shiny. It takes a little more effort but I think is worth it, and after the initial cost of the industrial mincer that can cope with bones the actual cost of all the ingredients for a month is the same if not a tad cheaper than a commercial dog food and I’m certainly not expecting my dog to live on kibble all his life how boring is that. Also the big things I noticed when I started him on this was the amount of poo he did halved and his coat got an amazing shine to it. Funny though I go to all this trouble for him and my grandads dog lived on table scraps and lived to a ripe old age of 17, never went to the vets never had vaccinations and was never on a dog lead, how times have changed. My grandad was a window cleaner mistakenly left the dog at a job, got home and realised later, panicked, went back to get him and there he was sitting waiting for him, amazing dog didn’t even get any training, where did it all go wrong.

Omg thank you Went through the comments and didn't find much about dental hygiene. My dog and I have started teeth brushing but like nail trimming, I am foreseeing a long journey in getting ok with it. She eats 2/3 raw 1/3 kibble so she doesn't have a big issue of plaque going on, but her canines have some showing up. I give her raw bones regularly, but for the canines it doesn't clean them up as much as the other teeth. She is 3 now. I tried the whole chew toy with dog tooth paste in it. $30. She wouldn't chew at all on it (probably because bones are way better). Teeth brushing is effective only if you do it multiple times a week and I am not there yet unfortunately. Any other tricks on cleaning those canine teeth would be appreciated.

For dental I do a combination of things - Silicone toothbrush and gel (3-4/times) - Raw bones (1-2/week) - Natural treats that require a lot of chewing - pig hooves, pig ears, moo tubes (tracheas), fish skins (daily) My dog came to us with healthy teeth but his gums were black. Since doing the above, his teeth continue to stay healthy and we can see his pink gums. The vet is impressed with his dental hygiene for an 8-year old dog. He is starting to show yellow stains along the top of his canines (near the gum) and the vet said it was okay given his age and his overall dental hygiene was good. It is difficult because it is right at the top and he doesn't really use that part to chew. I'd consult with the vet and monitor it. If it is a concern, they'd let you know. Good luck

Are there any supplements that are heavily marketed but that don't actually do much? Any to avoid?
@jennm25452 жыл бұрын
I would be very wary of the baking soda and salt choices. Pink salt is excellent for people (I use no other salt) but in moderation. I wouldn't use it for dogs because depending on what you are feeding your dog they may already be getting a lot of sodium.

I don't recommend A single/specific supplement for every dog. Just like training it's not a one size fits all thing. I practiced/supported allopathic medicine & fed kibble for 20 of the 30 yrs I've worked with dogs. Then ~11 yrs ago I started to add supplements and reduce pharmaceuticals, as well as add healthier real food and less processed. It taught me A Lot. I did & still do A Lot of research & continue learning. Now I use all natural choices 98% of the time. Contrary to popular opinion- I fed the vast majority of fosters and my pets raw diets for the same cost of kibble. And the ones who cost more to feed specialized diets, end up costing less in medical bills. I find ppl are spending a ton of money on all this extra stuff, but still feeding kibble. If you're willing to spend the money & time, then feed a good quality raw diet first. Then the supplements come in based on the breed, and or issues each dog has. Unless you can spend the time to learn by doing the research (which I realize not everyone excels at) you might want to consult with someone that's been successful in this area.

Hi Joel, what fish oil is best for dogs? The pill or does it come in different forms for dogs? Keep up the good work
@Flippokid2 жыл бұрын
Salmon is the most popular I think. Get the squirt bottle, not pills.

Hi. Whichever will get your dog to consume it or easiest for you. Because fishy is smell, dogs will usually not have issues having it. It will be trial and error. Some I use are: - Fresh - Canned sardines or mackerel in water. No added salt. You can mix it with their food, or feed it separately. - One ingredient treat - fish jerky, fish puff cubes, fish skin chews, dehydrated green-lipped mussel - Pill form - 4CYTE Oral Joint Supplement - Green Lipped Mussel, Shark Cartilage, Biota Orientalis Seed Oil, Abalone - Powder form - Pernaease Powder - Liquid form - Bark Naturals Omega + Coconut (ALA, EPA, DHA) - coconut oil, Cod Liver Oil, Flax Seed and Cotton Seed

sodium bicarbonate is actually very abrasive for teeth (my friend used to do it every night to get wighter teeth and she ended up damaging the outer layer of the teeth). There are teeth cleaners with sodium bicarbonate and maybe thats best than pure SB. Fish oil very good for people and dogs (fights inflammation). I am a nutritionist and in human nutrition they teach us there are so many nutrients in food we dont even know about them all so I do believe kibble needs to be supplemented every now and then. ohh and another great supplement are probiotics! both for people and dogs

I saw a video about using a fresh rib bone with the raw meat still on it. And they said one bone once a week as a meal replacement (cause it still had the meat on it too) would naturally clean their teeth and then do it like once a month to maintain them once they are clean. What are your thoughts? I guess the idea behind it has to do with the sinew in muscles acts like dental floss.

We give our GSD puppy Windie who 10 months old joint and hip chews. Too young ? Or did we start too late? Don’t know but hopefully it works
@asp12132 жыл бұрын
My opinion is that it's not too young, especially in the larger breeds that are prone to joint problems. I have a 16mo old pit mix and he's on a joint supplement because I know (confirmed by vet) his joints aren't great.

Not too late. I don't think you can be too early with that, but ask your vet to be sure.

Rotate every 6 months. Look for the big 3 Green Lipid Muscle (may upset the tummy), chrondoitin, amd glucosamine. As they get older or injured you can add MSM. I get equine MSM as older Equine GLM

Caution with just any fish oil these days. Unless otherwise stated they're heavily contaminated with heavy metals and toxins.

What form is the supplement? What kind of a supplement are you adding? If it's omega 3/6/9s, the following has worked for me and I have a fussy Siberian husky - Fresh - Canned sardines or mackerel in water. No added salt. You can mix it with their food, or feed it separately. - One ingredient treat - fish jerky, fish puff cubes, fish skin chews, dehydrated green-lipped mussel - Pill form - 4CYTE Oral Joint Supplement - Green Lipped Mussel, Shark Cartilage, Biota Orientalis Seed Oil, Abalone - Powder form - Pernaease Powder (mixed with yogurt or sprinkled on his food) - Liquid form - Bark Naturals Omega + Coconut (ALA, EPA, DHA) - coconut oil, Cod Liver Oil, Flax Seed and Cotton Seed

Hi I was wondering if someone could help me out on a good fish oil? I heard something about krill oil does anybody know about it
@patriciaremonda47892 жыл бұрын
Nordic Naturals. They get their fish oil from the unpolluted waters of the north sea, so they don't have high mercury levels. They make oils for people and pets. Great quality. Krill oil is good too, better than from larger fish like salmon and cod, which have significant amounts of mercury (toxic).

If any of your dogs have cancer or get cancer you need to give them golden paste. It's tumeric powder, water, and coconut oil. It's very very good for dogs and it is known to cure cancer. There's a channel named husky squad that can testify. Their dog had cancer but after it ate golden paste for a little while the cancer was gone.

Pink “Himalayan” salt? 🤣🤣🤣 no but really, if you have a dog that can’t eat fatty fish then fish oil is real good. Same with glucosamine. But supplements should be used with caution and carefully researched. If you are giving your dog meat and no bones, then yes bone meal/calcium supplements are a no brainer, but I still think that you shouldn’t supplement an already good diet proactively.
