The Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake beef has been consuming the internet and culture for quite some time now. It's been an ongoing victory lap by Kendrick. With that being said, what are some of the reasons this has blown up in the way it has? In this video, I go over some of the details of why I believe it did, as well as why this isn't the end-all-be-all when it comes to hip-hop beefs.

Think the fact that is such an artist has been saying all the things that we have collectively disliked about Drake over the years I think is what makes this so monumental. Sure the fact is one of the “big three” makes it even better but I’m looking at it from the perspective of someone finally saying what so many rappers have said quietly about Drake now immortalized in song form is a victory, regardless of who it is.

I am mostly a metalhead however since I live here in the West Coast, hip-hop has always been a huge deal in this part of the USA. I myself have had kind of a rocky relationship with hip-hop especially recently for what I love about it is mostly the clever poeticism that can be super impressive mixed with a the flow of the rapper, but most of recent hip-hop neglects that for vibes and talking about the hoes, music and drugs without any of the creativity or artistry. And not to mention the autotune most of them stick to. People like Kendrick Lamar are one of the few rappers that actually compels me in this genre since he does more than just use a lot of poetry and sincerity to it, but also the music itself can be creative and one of a kind. Obviously since we both from the same Coast I do have my biases but as someone who is fucking sick of Drake and been hating just the lyrics of him being a total piece of shit (especially when he talks about women in his songs just makes me nauseous) and just with how much undeserved fame he got I have been waiting for someone to just rough him up a bit just to get like actual compelling music back. Again as you said, it's most unlikely Drake will ever go away but I know that his image will never be the same. Like his shift to more bad publicity was going on since Pusha-T had his ass handed to him and in some aspects it seems like he only got worse as a person. While metal will always be my biggest love, if people like Kendrick inspire others to follow suit in making hip-hop this compelling again then the whole genre would be my second love.

If you like this beef, you should check out “Ether“ by Nas when he took on Jay Z. As an East Coast hip hop fan, Nas and Jay are two of my favorites. 90s New York hip hop is the best.

I personally got into this beef just because of the music not necessarily from the hard hitting disses. I feel a lot of this "pop culture" stuff (I guess that's the best way to explain this) doesn't have that much shelf life. Its eventually gonna get outdated in in the end the musicality wins out. And yeah in that regard Kendrick wins as well in my opinion. Drakes beats and in bars sometimes get boring though its probably just my personal preference.

the musicality wins out; such a great way to put it. I totally think that it will wear thin after some time just like other beefs tend to. :)

I've been a Drake disliker for a while now so I feel extremely vindicated by this whole situation. And I'm not yet familiar with most of Kendrick's discography but I liked TPAB and from the whole diss track series I thoroughly enjoyed Euphoria and Not Like Us in particular.

I'm glad I wasn't involved in the Drake vs Kendrick beef and headed on to old school rap like MF Doom and Cypress Hill. I still love rock, metal, and pop-punk

I have kinda outgrown rap, long ago. The massive immaturity. The phoned in nature of a lot- NOT ALL but A LOT of it. Why do some people get bent outta shape cos some rappers allegedly lied like Snoop and Rick Ross? (Snoop's store was graffitied.) I get it's WHAT they allegedly were untruthful about. Many people seem to take pro wrestling with grain of salt. I wonder why other aspects of entertainment aren't held to that same standard? Ever heard Jeru The Damagja's "Ya Playin' Yaself"? And nothing is original.
