The series originally featured William Frawley (who had first co-starred with Fred MacMurray 25 years earlier in the movie Car 99) as the boys' live-in maternal grandfather and housekeeper, William Michael Francis "Bub" O'Casey. William Demarest, playing Bub's brother, "Uncle Charley," replaced Frawley in 1965 because of Frawley's illness. In September 1965 (when the show moved from ABC to CBS and when it began being filmed in color), eldest son Mike (Tim Considine) married fiancée Sally Ann Morrison (Meredith MacRae), and his character was written out of the show. To keep the emphasis on "three sons", original youngest son Chip's (Stanley Livingston) friend Ernie (Barry Livingston) was adopted. In the program's later years, Steven Douglas remarried and adopted his new wife's young daughter Dorothy Anne ("Dodie") (Dawn Lyn).
While the three sons were always central to the storyline, several major changes took place by the late 1960s. In the spring of 1967, the ratings for the series began to sag and My Three Sons finished its seventh season in 31st place in the Nielsen ratings. It was decided that the 1967-1968 season would bring the program not only a new time slot but also new storylines to spice up the ratings. In the fall of 1967, CBS moved My Three Sons to Saturday at 8:30 pm ET. In the season premiere episode, "Moving Day", the Douglas family and Uncle Charley relocate from the fictional town of Bryant Park in the Midwest to Los Angeles. Robbie (Don Grady) marries his classmate/girlfriend, Katie Miller (Tina Cole). Tina Cole, in fact, had appeared in different roles on three previous episodes of My Three Sons: "House For Sale" from the fourth season (February 13, 1964), "The Coffee House Set" from the fifth season (November 19, 1964) and "Robbie and the Little Stranger" from the sixth season (February 17, 1966). At the end of the 1967-1968 season, the ratings had improved from the previous year with the series placing at 24th in the Nielsens. The following season, the newlyweds discover that Katie is pregnant and she gives birth to triplets named Robert, Steven, and Charles. Originally played by sets of uncredited twins, these babies were later played uncredited by Guy, Gunnar and Garth Swanson. The most familiar triplets in the show's last two seasons are played by Michael, Daniel and Joseph Todd.
For the series' 12th (and ultimately, final) season, CBS moved My Three Sons to Mondays at 10:00 pm ET. In addition to the time changes for the 12th season, a new four part story arc is introduced with MacMurray in a second role, that of his cousin, the Laird (Lord) Fergus McBain Douglas of Sithian Bridge. English actor Alan Caillou's voice was dubbed over MacMurray's. The plot centers on Lord Douglas's arrival in Los Angeles from the family's native Scotland, in search of a woman to marry and return with him to Scotland.
The series' cast had several music connections. MacMurray began his career as a saxophone player during the 1930s, and sometimes played it on the series, as well as clarinet. Frawley had been a vaudeville actor and sang in the 1929 short film Fancy That as well as in the 1936 film The General Died at Dawn and in several episodes of I Love Lucy. Actress Tina Cole (Katie) was born into the King Family, a popular 1950s-1960s group. Ronne Troup (Polly) was the step-daughter of singer Julie London and daughter of musician/composer Bobby Troup (who wrote the song Route 66 and also starred in the TV program Emergency! along with wife London), and Dawn Lyn is the younger sister of 1970s pop idol Leif Garrett. Don Grady (Robbie) composed and produced music, having created successful Las Vegas venues for Phantom of the Opera star Michael Crawford and pop star David Cassidy.

Loved this show. Everyone here aged well. Especially Tina Cole. She was beautiful then and still is!!!!. Looks like a model. She was my idol back then. So was Don Grady. So sad he passed so young. Wish there were shows like that now. Everythg so innocent and funny. I always feel sad when I watch these old shows cause these times will never be back. Miss my childhood I guess. Great video. Thanks. .🥰😢👏👏👏

The shows were innocent because that's all they were allowed to make. There were rules back then that you probably know about like married couples couldn't sleep in the same bed, if a couple were sitting on a bed one of there feet had to be touching the ground (😆 just like when you're playing pool) they couldn't show toilets in the bathrooms and all kinds of others.

Producer Don Fedderson really had a thing for engineers. On MTS, Steve Douglas, the principal character (played by Fred MacMurray) was an aeronautical engineer, and son Robbie becomes a civil engineer. And on Family Affair, which Fedderson also produced, the principal character, Bill Davis (played by Brian Keith) was a civil engineer (in fact, a co-owner of his own engineering firm). I always thought that there should have been a crossover episode between these two shows on which Bill Davis, Steve Douglas, and Robbie Douglas were working together on some big engineering project.

Actually that's partly correct that Demarest replaced Frawley. . William Frawley's last episode was S5 EP #17 "A Woman's Work" (air date 1/7/65) . William Demarest first episode was the very next one S5 EP# 18 "Here Comes Charley" (air date 1/14/65) . However William Frawley didn't die until over a year later -March 3rd 1966. @@2004mojo Maybe the reason "Bub" didn't like "Charley" because they were in competition with each other for film roles in the 30s & 40s. They both played the lovable gruff, a manager, an uncle type, cowboys, any genre etc. They also had similar backgrounds when they started in show business. Both started out in vaudeville. Both worked an act with their wife. Both marriages ended in divorce. Both had a slew of film credits and memorable tv roles. Both had one unforgettable role-Frawley as the the Judge's political adviser, who warns his client in great detail of the dire political consequences if he rules that there is no Santa Claus in "Miracle on 34th Street". What I liked about these shows is that they showed examples of how to communicate with each other and how to try to solve problems (rather than violence being the answer to everything). Yes, it was idealized, yes it was simple. But shows like this, and one of my favorites “Good Times”, at least showed an ALTERNATIVE to violence and anger. And maybe put a kernel of a better way to handle things, you know?

Because of this role people only seem to know Fred McMurray as a kindly family man. In actuality, most of his roles were cut-throat killers, notorious old west outlaws, and alot of crooked cops. But he was good at them. The original Double Indemnity, in which he played a killer insurance salesman, is one of the greatest movies of all time.

When MeTV was still showing 2 episodes daily one aired I didn't remember at all but it was funny & now have it saved on my DVR. S6 ep #5 "There's a What in the Attic?" . A lion gets loose and ends up in the Douglas attic. Ernie tries telling Steve who doesn't believe him. When he hears his door open he tells who he thinks is ramp , that he's gamey & needs a bath. Then from outside Steve hears Tramp barking, jumps out of bed & sees the lion leave the room . He & Robbie run from bedroom to bedroom to get away from it. Steve tries to phone the police but leaves the reciever gangling when the lion shows up by the phone. You hear the police yelling hello in the reciever. Meantime the lion's trainer comes up the steps and gets the lion to follow him outside. A police officer tells Steve they got a call. It was Ernie. He shimmied down the drainpipe & went next door to phone. Chip sleeps through the entire night of a lion being in the house. This could have easily been a Fred MacMurray vehicle.

*I'm sure others here know this but I didn't know this or simply didn't remember the storyline completely. When Tim Considine left the show they wanted to continue with the premise of the family having 3 sons. Chip's friend Ernie was an orphan & his foster parents were transferred overseas. Steve decides to adopt Ernie. He considers marrying the social worker assigned to the case when the court felt Ernie should be in a home with a woman but both realize it's wrong. Didn't help that Uncle Charley didn't like Ernie,. Found him annoying. The storyline played out in 3 parts. (From Wikipedia) As many times as I've watched the reruns I've missed those episodes every time .I always wondered why Ernie's parents would let him be adopted.(lol)

Fred MacMurray didn't tape them all in one day though. He insisted that he be able to film his scenes on non-consecutive days over 65 days but out of sequence. All the kitchen scenes would be filmed first. Then all the upstairs hallway scenes and so on and he was done for the season and had the rest of the year to do movies, play golf etc. The other actors would then film their scenes and have to do things to keep the continuity of the episodes like get haircuts once a week so they look the same in the episodes. Guest stars would have to return months later to complete their episode. You can catch the change in continuity 1st season Dawn Lyn (Dodie) joined the cast. Her missing teeth are barely showing in scenes with MacMurray, But in other scenes within the same episodes without him, she's shown with her teeth grown in.
