I really appreciate this list. It seems like most of the booktubers I watch avoid mystery books that have any kind of traditional series or those with police procedurals. Personally, I tire of those books quickly. Whereas, series police procedurals (or private detective equivalents don't get old for me. Thanks!

Same here. I actually am a private detective in real life, so I absolutely love PI stories. It makes my life feel more exciting than it actually is in reality 😂

SA Cosby is a fantastic find for me, recommended. Have read all of the Hap and Leonard novels, Lansdale is the bard of East Texas. Bad Chili is brilliant.

S.A. Cosby is easily the best author that I’ve had the pleasure of stumbling across recently. I read horror fiction predominantly (I like all kinds of stuff, but I’m a horror nerd through and through), and I think Cosby has, in every single book so far, inspired a sense of dread and panic within me that surpasses 90% of the horror I’ve read in recent memory. He has such a knack for atmosphere and putting his characters in hyper-tense situations that get the blood pumping. Great list as always!

I am just now reading my first Block book, A Diet of Treacle, in a nice little vintage looking "Hard Case Crime" edition and I am enjoying the heck out of it! It is a 50s beatnik crime thriller and it is a really fun read.

Coincidentally I just finished reading Drood by Dan Simmons in which the main character and narrator in the book is Wilkie Collins (author and friend of Charles Dickens). I didn't know if he was a real person or actual author of the book Moonstone till this review. Very Cool. Drood was very interesting btw if you like books about that era of London life. Simmons never disappoints in my humble opinion.

I whole heartedly agree with your assessment of All the Sinners Bleed. It didn't quite measure up to Razorblade Tears, but still superb and it was on my personal top 10. Another from that approximate genre from my list that I would recommend is Small Mercies by Dennis Lehane. Murder, revenge, family loyalty and local crime bosses. All against the backdrop of the school busing conflict in Boston in the 1970's.

I read a handful of the Bernie Rhodenbarr books when they were reprinted by No Exit in the early nineties, but I also returned to them this year, reading the first seven in the series! Absolute gems, such a delight to read. I'm now reading Calendar Girl by Stella Duffy, another throwback to the nineties. I haven't read her before, but I thought her story in the recent Daggers Drawn CWA anthology was the pick of the lot, so thought I'd check out her novels. Calendar Girl is her debut, the start of a private eye series and I recommend it (so far): written with style, humour and pace.

Im hearing many detractors saying Holly is just a platform for King to billow his political beliefs. I was going to pick it up but im sooooooooo sick of woke and political agendas finding their way into too many books these days. Also, how many books feature the protagonist from All the Sinners Bleed?
