I love this guy. After years of having moved to manga because of my distaste for what comics had become, I stumbled onto this guy's video on Usagi Yojimbo. I looked at his other videos. I looked at his library. I heard his nerdy enthusiasm. Those three things gave him enough credibility so I decided to give this lame looking children's comic a try. And now I can confidently tell you that Usagi Yojimbo is comic book caviar. Thank you eloquent indian dude. You're the man.

Great selections! I've been meaning to explore Richard Sala's work for a while, definitely going to hold some at my library along with Motherless Oven and Children of the Sea. Great video! I’ve found your channel just recently and I’ve been enjoying it quite a lot. Making quarantine a little bit more bearable, so thanks. I love this little fantasy triptych of videos you have crafted. Very nuanced and stunningly diverse. So I'm gonna leave some more recommendations for everyone interested. The Spire by Simon Spurrier, Jeff Stokely and Andre May: This comic is a weird mix of fantasy and a couple other genres, but to me is definitely fantasy. A story with a lot in common with Nausicaa, with a lot of Miyazaki themes, all blended with a weird Mad Max vibe. Violent, graphic, but with a lot of feeling and heart. The Hero by David Rubín: I’m gonna throw a recommendation from my country, given the fact that you seem to have enjoyed Beowulf by Rubín and Garcia. This retelling of Heracles with weird sci-fi elements is a visual delight, even for an early work of Rubin. There is a lot of Jack Kirby vibes here, and it is a rather cruel book departing a lot with the Disney version, more in tune with the original myth at its core. The Girl from the Other Side by Nagabe: This manga is still ongoing but it’s a treat. Nagabe’s art is deceivingly simple, the story is slow and filled with visual storytelling, with little dialogue and a lot of the story delivered through the characters body language. A Grimm brother’s tale in essence with a japanese sprit. A story about connection but also about separation that is so cute as is dreadfully tense sometimes. I’m sorry if you have already covered any of this books before (and for the LONG comment). If so, I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did. Stay safe people!

Thank you so much for such a wonderful comment and some great suggestions; I'll be looking up The Spire and The Girl from the Other Side. Also, if you are apologizing for long comments, you need to spend some more time on this channel - it's all ABOUT long comments and long videos and long chats! I briefly talked about the Hero in one of my 'Recent Reads and New Acquisitions' videos (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9OdfqtqvrHDqGQ.html) and The Hero almost made another appearance in my honorable mentions for this list. But I already had Beowulf and Ether and even briefly considered Battling Boy/Aurora West so Mr Rubin was getting a little too much love, haha!

Just watched the three parts in one sitting. Amazing videos, you have a wonderful way of expressing your thoghts. If I could make a recommendation from a recently read comic that I liked a lot, I must mention Coda by Simon Spurrier and Matias Bergara. Post-Apocalyptic High Fantasy with beautiful art, great character archs and elegant plot twists. Also has some really funny parts.

Loved these series, great selection and i apprecuate the effort you to put into these videos. Also ur selfimposed constricts and rules to make sure that a particular genre is clearly defined. Ordered sailor twain was in my wish list for a while since i have meaning to collect all of first second comics. Please do ' wtf' genre of comics, i always found European scifi comics to be in that league. P. S. Why no paul pope? his battling boy series are fantasy genre isnt it. Anyways do more of top ten lists - adventure, horror, comedy, European etc. TY

Thanks so much; I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I'll definitely keep doing lists but spread them out over my videos, and of course do proper reading to warrant them! 😁 As for Paul Pope, he came very close here with Battling Boy (as he did in sci-fi for Heavy Liquid or 100%) but in the end I think I out it with other superhero comics with fantasy elements. I may regret that choice later, but honestly I can't think of what I would drop from here to accommodate that anyway, the true test of a Top 10! 😁

Hi FtLoC! I found your channel through your excellent video about "Lone Wolf and Cub", very nifty to give my friends an introduction to the comic (and it's parallells to "The Mandalorian"-television show). Eeally love this channel for talking about Japanese, European, American & other comic traditions side by side. I wondered if you had read these three fantasy comics (and if not, I do recommend them fiercely): The "Dinotopia" illustrated books by James Gurney ("Jurassic Park" in Art Nouveau/academicist art style), the "Thorgal"-series by Jean Van Hamme & Grzegorz Rosinski (mix of European Dark Age history & mythology and "Ancient Astronauts" & Atlantis) and the limited "Siegfried" comic by Alex Alice (a magnificent interpretation of the "Nibelung-Ring Cycle"-opera by Richard Wagner, inspired by Norse mythology).
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, I really appreciate your kind words! I've just started reading Thorgal, actually, having just finished the first volume (what a coincidence!) after a viewer recommended it following my 'Recent European Reads' spotlight. I've heard a lot of about Alex Alice's Siegfried, but the books seem very hard to find here - I remember looking for them some time ago only to be disappointed. Maybe it's time to try again! And DInotopia sounds great, I'm going to look it up right now! Thanks so much for the tips and please keep them coming! 😁
@MacScarfield
@MacScarfield 3 жыл бұрын
@@ftloc Thank you for your quick reply! I almost feel bad hearing that "Siegfried" is so difficult to find, since I found it so ridiculous cheap and translated to my own language in my local comic shop. Not fair at all! "Thorgal" is fantastic, but I would recommend to read a couple of books into the series, since the series takes a while to find its final style, its true tone and its emotional depth. In my opinion, that is the the "trilogy" of "The Black Galley", "Beyond the Shadows" & "The Fall of Brek Zarith" where it finds it and just builds on from there. I would also recommend "The Keykeeper" and "Arachnea" as later brilliant "single issues" in a continuing story. Would love to see your take on "Thorgal" in a similar video to the one you made about "Lone Wolf & Cub" some time in the future! Glad to hear "Dinotopia" also sparked an interest: I find it a true hidden gem, I hope you do too!
@ftloc
@ftloc 3 жыл бұрын
@@MacScarfield I quite enjoyed the first volume of Thorgal, but I can see what you mean about it perhaps needing a bit of time to find its voice. The setup is interesting, and even though the plots seem 'simple' right now, the structure and approach is not the same ole same ole, which is very encouraging. I'll definitely keep going, as long as I can find more volumes! I looked for Siegfried again but alas the only volumes available here are extremely expensive imports so I'll have to keep waiting. On to seek Dinotopia; I love hidden gems! 😁

@ftloc

This is purely personal but I love slim hardcovers. They are fun and easy to read and give me the heft and beauty I enjoy as well. So I'd say that the original 12 volumes in hardcover are my favourite way to read the Sandman, even though I do love the oversizing of the Absolute Editions.

I would like a video on the Rob Davis books and I would recommend (for future videos) that you put the lesser known comics first (I think it would catch viewers more). It was great video and I only knew about Fables and the comics you have talked about before. In my opinion Fables was really good for the first 75 issues but quality went down after that, specially after the departure of Jean James on cover duty. I will check all the comics out and see what I like.

Let me know what you think of the books you do get to try out! And thanks for the tip or the order; I will try that out the next time! My thinking here was if people liked my first - more famous - books themselves, they may feel more confident in my subsequent choices (their taste matches mine, let's keep going!). Also, I wasn'ty sure if ending with the most well known comics wouldn't be so something of an anti-climax? It's so hard to know what is 'right' that the only way is to try everything, no? 😁

For the Love of Comics I know what you mean about Autumnlands, I also read both volumes. But there’s no comparison, this is a very innocent and joyful approach, nothing dark, contains a lot of jokes. It’s about the last member of a long dynasty of dark wizards, the problem is that every bad action against the local population has exactly the opposite effect and has a lot of funny situations, Childress and adults could enjoy it. Not like autumnlands. Give at chance look for some artwork on the internet is from David Wenzel

Just finished these three videos, the first time I've seen your channel. Yesterday I watched another two "best fantasy comics" list videos, and I don't think there was a single title that appeared on both lists - the other list focused mostly on recent Image/Boom sorts of fantasy titles - excellent work, but quite different from your list. Now I've got two very long lists of comics to read - needless to say, I've included your exclusions and honorable mentions on my version of your list. It's all great stuff. I don't think you mentioned any comics in the classic euro/BD style, with their meticulous lines, close detail, lots of vast architecture, and weird amalgams of fantasy, sf, and the absurd - Moebius, Peeters, etc. Was that deliberate?

So thrilled to hear it, and a warm welcome to the channel! I hope you find plenty here to enjoy! The Image, and previously Vertigo, impact cannot be denied, and I got to touch upon some of them in the build up to this final part, but yes, on a personal level, these particular stories just resonated with me more. There are many comics that are not just more popular but also lean more heavily into fantasy elements and tropes, but I guess I went with 'comics I've loved that also can be classified (by me) as fantasy' if that makes sense! 😁 A livestream I did a couple of months ago - 10 Comics to read after Tintin and Asterix, features a dollop of those classic European comics you may be referring to (along with other, non BD comics) and that's here if you don't mind the unedited format of livestreams: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/osp-Za-GnN6VmHU.html And there's also my Top 10 Image Comics (another livestream, here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adR-qttept2Upqc.html) and my Top 5 Dark Horse series (a shorter, edited video, here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hd6piZuD2arSeqs.html) ; these may be of interest to you? Great fantasy comic not already featured on this list: The Swords of glass by Corgiat and Zuccheri A fairly "traditional" hero’s journey, distinguished by sensitive characterization, imaginative locations and stunning artwork. So stunning, in fact, that I thought it headed straight into the uncanny valley. There is something disquieting about the character’s eyes. Anyway, definitely worth a read.

A belated comment perhaps but better late than never, managing to catch up with all your new content now that we’re all somewhat isolated. Hope you and Ashwitha are staying safe! I have a question about elfquest; I tend to be interested in any sort of epic fantasy and this series seems to bring a good many innovative and refreshing unusual elements to the table (for instance, the central characters’ romance, as you mentioned). That said, I’m only for the most part able to find it in black and white, some of the images you displayed were in colour 🧐 try as I might, I’ve found it very difficult to source an affordable colour edition of any elfquest story, especially during these times. Would you recommend reading them in black and white? Does the absence of colour detract or enhance the general storytelling? How did you experience the series for the first time? Perhaps I’m overthinking this and should just take the plunge and pick up volume 1 but I did think it was an interesting (first world 🥴) dilemma and your expertise would be very much appreciated!
@ftloc
@ftloc 4 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend; long time no 'see'! And you should know there's no such thing as a late comment here 😁. I'm glad to see you're doing all right in these strange times, and Ashwitha and I are well, thank you for asking. All the 'original' ElfQuest stories I have are in hardcopy are in the Dark Horse volumes, and so in black and white. The Final Quest new stories published by Dark Horse are in full colour, though. However, the entirety of the original series, including all the minis and adjacent series, are available for free reading online by the authors, and those are in colour and from where I got a lot of the images here for connvenience (since I don't have a scanner). I quite like the black and white, but you can compare for yourself if you want, by looking up the comic here: elfquest.com/read/digitalEQ.html I hope that helps you decide what works best for you!

Love this video! I'm not a huge fantasy fan but i still made a top ten(ish) list. Some are probably not translated to english. Just like you I loved Sailor Twain. It's not only in this top 10 but also ranked high in my overall all time favorites. Maybe not all books meet your fantasy standards but they are pure sang fantasy to me. ;-) 2. Azimut by Lupano & Andreae 3. Watersnakes by Tony Sandoval 4. A wrinkle in time - graphic adaptation by Hope Larson 5. Tale of sand by Jim Henson 6. Les 3 fruits by Zidrou & Oriol 7. Ghostopolis by Doug Tennapel 8. Brindille by Federico bertolucci & Frédéric Brrémaud 9. The gigantic beard that was evil by Stephen Collins 10. Brocéliande by various artists 12. Tale of Sand has a bit of a cameo in my previous video, and The Gigantic Beard is one of my absolute favourites, but - as you say - just shy of the definition of fantasy I decided to go with for this list. As if that matters though, what a masterpiece that book is. I really hope most of these other books have English translations! Thank you!

Great fantasy comic not already featured on this list: Thor by Walt Simonson Macho superhero operatic swords&sorcery spectacle is not an easy story to really connect with the reader, but this work really threads the needle. Turning the pages, you can practically hear the thunder rolling in and the electric guitar going off in the distance. For this comic, the only really good way to experience it are the original issues. The collected editions are all more or less ugly. Also, only roughly the first half of the run is really "essential", I think.

I read & enjoyed Order of the Stick long ago but felt it was more of a filler series compared to Erfworld on the same site. The latter had great art and was slower to come out. Art aside, do you think Erfworld was inferior story-wise? Are they both still ongoing?
@ftloc
@ftloc 4 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I think I only read a couple of issues of Erfworld so wouldn't feel equipped to comment or compare. I think the Order of the Stick may have started out as a gag/filler type of comic, but moved very fast to establish itself as something a bit richer, and then really went completely complex and epic, both in plot and characters/relationships. Even if I compare it to other, non-web, comics I feel it more than holds its own. I'm not sure if these series are still going on. I usually purchase the print editions of web comics (ditto Kate Beaton, Bad Machinery, Private Eye, etc) so I'm not very current or caught up. I saw a to-be-released volume on Amazon some time ago but haven't checked in on the site to line it up.

Great fantasy comic not already featured on this list: The Ogre gods: Petit by Hubert and Gatignol A quasi-renaissance fantasy world where the rich literally eat the poor. Of the cluster of modern european fantasy showcased at number 8, this one is my favorite, as it has that rare quality of an imaginary world that is both believably "historical" and yet visually imaginative and immersive. What I liked best was the considerable cast of characters and how real they were as well as the ammount of development they get. I also liked the world and its complex cultural clash. I would prefer a fantasy (long series) recomendation but if there's something in si-fi that fits I wouldn't mind. Great fantasy comics not already featured on this list: The Great Walls of Samaris and Fever in Urbicand By Schuiten and Peeters Referring to the discussion on genre in the last video, these two comics probably belong more in the "bizarre nonliteral dreamlike journey" category than actual fantasy. I normally do not like dreamlike comics and yet I adore these two. They are the best comics about cities and architecture I have read, and there is some kind of primal, mysterious power about them. They are the first two parts of a series titled "Obscure cities", but the other parts fall into the trap where the storytelling is not strong enough to sustain interest in the dreamlike, nonliteral journey, which is a difficult and rare thing for a writer to do. These two works definitely deserve more attention. "Samaris" has recently been re-published by IDW, but featuring modernized recoloring and should be avoided. The older editions by NBM are better.
