Strangely underrated these days. He wasn't a shredder (obviously) but he played with such touch and precision that it's really difficult to exactly emulate him - as any cover-band guitarist who's ever done a Shadows track will tell you! Every British guitarist I love seems to have been inspired by him: Gilmour, Jimmy Page and the lot of 'em!

Fantastic choices, John :) I’d just throw in a few extra suggestions: My favourite Jeff Beck instrumental “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” (from Wired) A Gary Moore one from Colosseum II “Fighting Talk” (Wardance) Snowy White “The Journey - Parts 1 & 2” (White Flames) Mark Knopfler “Going Home” (Local Hero) Eric Clapton “Edge of Darkness”

Hi John, a great list. I would have included a couple more if it was my list. By far my favourite guitar instrumental is "Tommy" by Focus from the "Moving Waves" album. Jan Akkerman is simply masterful on that track. The other one for me is "The Snow Goose" by Camel. On that track not only do we have the most melodic guitar part but what Andy Ward and Doug Ferguson are doing on drums and bass must make them arguably the best rhythm section ever! PS I thought you might have included "Sleepwalk" unless that doesn't count because it was on a steel guitar.

Good choices John. Did you know Jessica was Dicky Betts tribute to Django Reinhardt, he decided to play it in Django style.

Great list. Some of my favourite guitarists in the list. Some I have seen and some I wish I had seen (Jeff Beck and SRV in particular). I have seen Gary Moore with his rock and blues lineups. I saw Jeff Healey (fantastic) and Joe Satriani. I think I had the same pull out crush of love floppy ‘vinyl’ disc as you from a guitar mag. I too prefer a Hard Road to the Beano album. Nice one!

Totally agree with Cause We've Ended As Lovers as being the one that captures the essence of Jeff Beck.

Excellent choice John! The older I get the more I appreciate The Shadows and Hank. My favourite track of theirs is "Wonderful Land" which really portrays that image to me. Nice to see that you've included that unsung guitar hero Gordon Giltrap. After suffering so much personal tragedy over the past few years it's great to see that he's gigging again. I think that Phil Manzanera and Robert Fripp have come up with some great instrumentals over the years. I shouldn't forget Bill Nelson either - his tribute to Stuart Adamson (Big Country) called "For Stuart" is well worth a listen. As always great work John!

Great list of 10 Instrumentals! I'll add Stevie Ray Vaughan "Little Wing" from The Sky Is Crying 1990, amazing. And "Moby Dick" from Led Zep II 1969 (long drum solo too). Also Link Wray "Rumble" 1958. I'll also add several multi instrumentals with prominent guitar, "Red" from King Crimson Red 1974 and John McLaughlin Mahavishnu Orch "Birds of Fire" from that album, 1973. Not everyone's cup of tea but two of my all time favs.

drag racer by the doug wood band will always be one of my fav guitar instrumentals. if you are a fan of snooker in the uk you would recognise it as the theme tune from 70's-80's.

Some belters in there . The Jeff Beck and Gary Moore tracks nobody could argue with . You mentioned The Loner and I always loved the original on the Cozy Powell solo album with Dave Clempson on guitar duties . I’d have Zappas Rat Tomago in there and Brush With The Blues by Jeff Beck from the Who Else album . Need to scratch the head for a few more ! Cheers

Great stuff John! 😃👍 I remember whan i was about 15 and went to my first "proper" guitar lesson. The teacher asked "If you could learn to play any song in the world ever - what would it be?" I answered "The Crush of Love" 😎👌 First satch tune I ever learned - Still can't play the solo though 😂

Gordon giltrap re-recorded heartsong in the 90s with guest appearances, and it was an improved version (hard to believe, but it was).
