I read these at different points of my life and influenced my path as a student and even now as a psychologist- there's a good mix of self-help, psychological science, lived experience and even a textbook! It's a bit of a long one so buckle in and hope you enjoy! :)

Currently reading Body Keeps Score, and its a such a good book! The explanation of trauma throughout a wide range of individuals was very comprehensible. Had to put it down a few times because reading of trauma of that nature can be a bit much. Love it though!

As a psych undergrad, and someone diagnosed with bpd, I really appreciate the way you explained the condition, as well as how gentle you were with the topic. It seems like most who talk about it aren’t very aware of how it really works, and that shows in the ways they describe dbt patients. No hate to others, but you come across like you genuinely put your heart and sole into getting to know patients as well as your research. I appreciate this video a lot, thank you!☺️

In Germany, we read the book by Gerrig, but in America, the students read Atkinson and Hilgard Introduction to Psychology

added most of them to my list 😀 I am in my Masters Programme in clinical psychology, and in my country I have to decide if I then want to go on to work with children/adolescents or adults. Since you have done both I was wondering if you could maybe do a video about the differences in the approach etc.? I know you touched on it in a Q&A which was helpful so I'd love to hear more :)

This was so helpful! Thank you. For the Happiness Trap, would you recommend the normal version or the practitioner version for a 2nd year psychology student? Or both?

I'd say normal version! Practioner version is usually more helpful once you actually have a client so you can apply the skills immediately (otherwise it's a bit dry just reading a textbook!)

Hi Ro! Firstly, thank you for your informative videos. They really help demystify alot of the nitty gritty around taking up psychology as a profession. My question is around how you managed living expenses while studying full time. Alot of unis have disclaimers advising that even a part time job will be difficult if you want to perform well in the course (which we all know is a must if you want to get anywhere). Say someone wants to do a 2 year masters or a 3-4 year doctorate of clinical psychology. Do you have any resources that might help in the above context? Many thanks

Oh great question. I personally lived at home, so big thanks to my parents as I was rent free, and most of my meals too. I think in undergrad there is definitely space for a part time job but for Masters I did have to drop down as it was very full on. Many in my cohort did 1 day/ week research roles or their previous jobs (yoga teaching/ soccer coach etc).

Loved this video! I read "The body keeps the score" last year and it was the most insightful and heartbreaking read that detailed the many forms that trauma can come in and the different ways it affects people across their lives - truely the best psychology book I've read to date

@@thepsychdiaries I actually found this video from wanting more psych book recommendations after my therapist suggested I read the body keeps the score! I’m not done with it, and my therapist said she hasn’t even read it all, but it’s been such a journey in what I have read. I’m finding it really useful for understanding my own trauma and in a professional capacity since I’m studying psychology. I look forward to reading some of the books you mentioned :)

Hey ☺️ I have graduated from high school this year and I was thinking about studying psychological science. I have two questions, so maybe you can help me out a little 🥰 First of all, is there a difference between psychological science ans psychology? And second of all, if I'd want to become a counsellor, would I have to complete the whole pathway to become a clinical psychologist or are there other ways to become a registered counsellor (e.g. after three years of undergraduate study) thank you so much ❤️

Hey Summer! At my uni (UNSW) they just had somewhat different courses- most of them overlapped but I think psych science had the ability to major something and b. psychology meant you had guaranteed entry to honours, it might be different at different unis however. I'm so sorry not too sure about the counsellor pathway! It wasn't offered my unis- I think it's actually a different accreditation altogether (Diploma of Counselling I think)

Thank you for this video. This a really varied list and I think there will be something for everyone! I wanted to share a recent read which has had a bit of an impact on me. 'Your own kind of girl' by claire bowditch. Specifically it's the way she talks back to her inner critic that's stuck with me. She named that voice 'Frank' and throughout the book there's this endless litany of "f**k off frank". Without any concious effort I've started to respond to my own inner critic in the same way. It makes me laugh every time, which is a nice change from how I typically feel after frank rears his ugly head.

@@thepsychdiaries have you read how to be yourself? It’s such a wonderful easy to read book even for someone who doesn’t know all the terms and mumbo jumbo that goes a long with it. I haven’t taken any psych classes as I’m in high school right now (might take one next year idk), but this book as well as blink are really easy to understand books. Have you read them?

I’m really enjoying your podcast. Thanks for all the recommendations. I just wanted to let you know that a lot of autistic people don’t like the term ‘ASD’ because we conceptualise our neurodivergence as a difference, but not a disorder. If you’re interested in Temple Grandin, you may also be interested in reading the critiques that some autistic people have written of her work. She can be ableist at times and you might be interested in that as a psychologist. 😊
