The 360 version of Sonic Generations has been backwards compatible on Xbox One for a while, but they recently added "FPS Boost" which allows 60FPS and 4K resolution when played on Xbox Series X.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the *Definitive* Sonic 3 for me. I still remember when i got the stage select code for the game and discovered those 'other' stages and that got me hooked for the meaning behind that Flying Battery Zone that was mentioned. I got what i, we, asked for months later :)

Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Mania are my two Sonic GOATs. S3&K has quite a story going for it without using words. Mania takes what made the Genesis games great and improved on it. I didn't like Sonic CD's level design. The time travel mechanic and emphasis on exploration ruined the flow of the game. I'm so used to collecting rings, killing enemies, and reaching the end of the level.

Transformed is, to me, the best "Kart-game" ever. It just has everything. Also on Series X, it just got HDR- and fps boost support. I started play it from beginning again. Fantastic and finally with 60fps on console. If you missed it, correct that error!

Too bad that the Master System version of Part 1 gets no love. It is still my favorite Sonic Game, with fantastic level design and a lot of variety. It feels different to the 16-Bit games by being not as fast, so I kind of understand why it is often singled out, but this is just so much fun to play and rewarding.

Now that Sonic Generations runs at 4K / 60fps on Xbox Series X, it has become one of my favorite Sonic games ever. All-Stars Racing Transformed has always been great but now that it's also 60fps on Xbox Series consoles it is absolutely AMAZING. 💙

I know people will think I'm crazy, but of all of the Sonic games, Sonic Adventure was the one I had the most fun with and spent the most time on. I loved everything about that game, and to this day, I still haven't met another console with the feeling that the Dreamcast had.

This really brought be back to before Sonic 2 came out and all the anticipation I felt leading up to its release. Then to finally have it in my hands that Christmas holiday and having the time to really savor it. It did not disappoint and was so much fun to play it, seeing the improvements they made over the original, and figuring things out. I didn't have a NES when Mario 3 came out, but I imagine there was similar magic for that game. It truly felt special to me playing Sonic 2 at the end of 1992. It fully lived up to all the hype in my eyes, though I could get it to glitch in the Chemical Plant Zone and get stuck sometimes if I went too fast.. It really is a shame they were so fixated on making everything 3D in the 32-bit era that they couldn't just provide a traditional 2D Sonic on Saturn that was redrawn and enhanced in the way that Sonic Mania is both familiar but well beyond the capabilities of the Genesis. I never could get into Sonic CD. Exploration is not as much my thing as straightforward action is. But I think I'll go back to it. When I last played it, I wasn't at my best mentally and I needed no-nonsense, intense action to enjoy playing. But I have changed my mind on games that never grabbed me before, even some that should have been my kinds of games in the first place. I've been going back to some lately to give them another chance and several games have really jumped out at me as being a lot more fun than they were when I had last played them. Knights of the Round arcade and Undercover Cops arcade are two of those that I didn't hate before, but I enjoyed them so much more recently. Another is Yoshi's Island for SNES, which was just a bit too slow and relaxed for me at the time I previously played it, but I've been playing through that in the last few days and have had a good bit of fun with it. The presentation of that is quite nice. It's in that spirit that I should give Sonic CD another shot. It's always nice when a game you didn't like much in the past grabs you in a way where you finally get what all the fuss was about.

I actually enjoyed Sonic Chronicles as well, even though I know it is incredibly flawed but I still enjoyed trying out different party combinations with some of the iconic characters from across the series.

One the Sonic Advance games might have deserved a spot

The All Stars racing series are all my favorite games in the series. I played the original the least, but I absolutely love Transformed and Team. As for the mainline games, I have a soft spot for Sonic 3 and Sonic Adventure, but they're both rough for me to play today.

Wow, someone finally agrees with me on Sonic Chronicles, never thought I'd see that day. But one big reason there can't be sequels of it is because of Ken Penders and his lawsuit, preventing the use of the main new characters and story elements of this game again.

I grew up with a Sega Genesis and I will always gravitate back towards the 2D Sonic games as well. I've tried the 3D ones, but they just didn't gel with me at all. I'd actually have a similar list minus games like Sonic Chronicles and Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic Mania is probably my favorite as well since it offers so much classic Sonic goodness! Sonic CD is also one of my favorites as I actually like the time travel mechanic and has one of my favorite game soundtracks! It also can be beaten faster than most other Sonic games, so it is fun to replay for a quick burst of fun. This is going to sound weird, but I also really love Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine even if it isn't really a "true" Sonic game. I just love Puyo Puyo that much! 😅

The sheer excitement and joy of unboxing a sega megadrive in 1993 at Christmas, to play Sonic 2, is still unrivalled. I mean come on, look at it, listen to it, it's a masterpiece.

My personal fav titles are Master System Sonic 1, Transformed and the Adventure titles. I've put so many hours into them all that it's just silly. It's a shame Master System Sonic doesn't get much love as it's soundtrack is flawless, the map screen is a nice depiction of progress, and the emeralds throughout the stages that reward daring exploration is a prefrence over special stages for me. Solid list though.

Colours and Transformed saved my interest in the series. Colours for the intricate level designs and Transformed for the sheer spectacle and being more skill based than Mario Kart

Just bought a Sonic plushie toy in my local smths toy barn this morning when in buying a foot tall MechaGodzilla for my nephew (yeah I'm a cool uncle who's teaching him about the Toho originals etc). Cute girl behind the counter serves me and say "Oh my dad plays the old sonic also". CHRIST I'M OLD. I'm 39 and still remember getting a mega drive on my 9th birthday in 1991. Sonic was the game I turned to in my 11 to 13 year old time in school when I got bullied bad. He was and still is a special part of my childhood. Great video Lord. Absolutely brilliant

My favorites would be Sonic Generations HD (best Sonic game in general), Sonic Adventure 2/Battle, Sonic3&Knuckles (best 2D Sonic game), Sega All Stars Racing, All Stars Racing Transformed (best Sonic spinoff), Sonic Colors Wii version, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Adventure/DX, Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Rush Adventure, and Sonic Triple Trouble.

That's a really solid list, I can't help but smile nostalgically whenever I hear any track from those 16-bit entries in the series. It's like I'm instantly transported back to that time, really damn good memories. Also Sonic Mania absolutely deserves the number one spot, it's a fantastic love letter to the Mega Drive/Genesis games, but also stands on it's own as a damn good game.

I always loved the Sonic Games, mainly because I was a major Sega fanboy in my time. I started off with the Master System, and then discovered the Mega Drive from my brother, who tended to bring over rental consoles and some great games to play on. I rekindled my interest in the Mega Drive after finding one at a charity shop one day, for $5AU. It came in a nifty Nuby carry case, and had two controllers. And it also worked brilliantly. This was technology that was designed to last. I later got a Mega CD Model 1, and a 32X addon, and more recently, a Sega Game Gear. And I've never been better. These wonder consoles were worth the effort finding and getting, and with their brilliant design, they deserve to be played.

While I did explore the Genesis library more than most others have, Sonic was basically my Mario. I had grown up playing Sonic games and never even heard of a Super Nintendo until I was finally allowed on the internet around 13 or so, and pretty much loved the series from the start. Granted, it wasn't until later when I understood why I loved the physics and momentum of the controls, and the "Classic Era" is my favorite because despite enjoying all eras of Sonic for what they are the original trilogy seriously aged like a fine wine, their presentation and game play holds up well for modern tastes if you enjoy satisfyingly difficult games. On my absolute favorite, I'm quite torn between Sonic 1 or Sonic 3, I find myself humming music from both those games without even thinking about it sometimes. I am quite surprised you actually enjoyed Sonic Chronicles. I have not played it recently, but as a kid with a DS (because it was cheap, mind you) I remember enjoying it quite a bit, though that is probably a freak who loves both action and RPG games equally. (Seriously, someone make a Rougelike Looter Shooter in the GZDoom engine... with platforming, I dare ya!) I was able to look past the music quality back then, but yeech, recordings from the Genesis' headphone jack would have served better music for the overworld. Maybe if the music was good more people would give it fair reviews, since it was certainly engaging enough to keep a kid of my type entertained through multiple playthroughs. As for Sega's handling of Sonic today... ehh... I don't have high expectations nor low expectations. Another mediocre Sonic game now would hurt his reputation even more, and unless they give the next game coming out some actual relaxed time in the oven it's probably gonna be mediocre again. Seriously, I've mostly turned to fan works to keep me excited about Sonic and finding good games featuring him. Fans even made the perfect 3D Sonic game for me in the form of Sonic Robo Blast 2, as it tries to mimic the classic 2d style while putting it's own spin on things thanks to it's heavily modified Doom engine it uses, it's quite impressive how such a versatile, powerful engine originated from 1993.

Mania really was incredible. I was in college at the time but I ended up staying awake all night just to wait for the pre-order to unlock. Think I got up to Press Garden around 2 or 3 in the morning before I decided to try and get (some) sleep.

I was in my latter teens when I played Sonic Chronicles, and I quite enjoyed it then (and still do now). I thought it was a solid game all-around. Nothing spectacular, but a nice enjoyable game nonetheless. My younger sisters enjoyed it too (and still do), so it wasn't just me. I wasn't much of an internet person back then, so imagine my surprise a few years later when I find out it's one of the most trashed Sonic games ever by just about everyone online, whether on forums or on KZfaq. Now different strokes for different folks and all that, but after about a decade of wondering why the heck I like the game and genuinely see few reasons to regard it as one of Sonic's low points when practically everybody seems to dunk on the game or resist talking about it at all, I've finally come across someone else who openly shares my opinion of the game. Thanks SLX!

As much as I love the first two Sonic games, I've gotten spoiled by the Sonic Classic Heroes romhack and haven't played them in their original versions in a long time. I'm glad you don't hate Sonic The Hedgehog! Besides Sonic CD, Sonic games don't usually get enough love on your channel. This is a good video! Sonic made me fall in love with Sega and along with Street Fighter II made me a believer in videogames in general!

Dr. Robotnik's true name is Dr. Eggman because he is shaped like an egg. The "Bonus Stages", where you obtain Chaos, Super and Sol Emeralds, Time Stones and Chaos Rings, are called Special Stages, not Bonus Stages. The Bonus Stages that you're thinking of are the Gumball Machine, Magnetic Orbs and Slot Machine Bonus Stages from the Sonic 3 series (Sonic 3 Standalone, Sonic & Knuckles Standalone, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic 3 Complete), etc.. The worst Sonic racing game is Team Sonic Racing because the game does not keep track of your online win and loss records. Plus, Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus is the true Sonic 4.

Starlight Zone is fantastic and Labyrinth is a nice change of pace from the rest of the game. Scrap Brain is challenging as a final level should be. Sonic 1 has no filler unlike Sonic 2 where I could do without some of the levels in the second half.

I actually completely agree with your list, even the placements- aside from the racing game since I never played it.

Yeah there are a good bit of great sonic game's. My favorite's are sonic 1, 2, 3, sonic and knuckles and sonic adventure. Sonic CD, sonic adventure 2, sonic mania, sonic color's and sonic generation's are also great sonic game's as well.

Seeing Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing on here was a delight. I love that game, the Xbox version in particular, and it saddens me that it somehow didn't make the cut for Xbox backwards compatibility. I'd love to know why.

Base on your description of Sonic CD, I'm willing to guess it would be my favorite Sonic game in the current day. At 37 I still enjoy the Genesis Sonic games but I do find them a little monotonous, and now prefer games where I can explore a bit more.

A very solid list and I agree with most of these. Sonic Mania definitely deserves the top spot and was an incredible experience.

Unpopular opinion, but I always loved the idea of Sonic more than the experience. Sonic Adventure in 1999 was the game to change that for me. Absolutely adored it and have even gone back to the OG Sonic and really enjoy it a lot more now than I used to. But I'd say my top 5 were, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Colours, Sonic Generations, Sonic 1, Sonic and Sega Allstars Racing Transformed. Hopefully this won't get me banned! haha. I really do need to give Sonic 2 the same stab I did the 1st. I also loved the idea of Sonic CD but just found it too unweildly too :( Oh and I can't believe I completely forgot about Sonic Mania in this comment! That is definitely number bestest!

Love seeing Sonic CD up at the top. I'm not actually much of a Sonic person, however I adore that game to death. The soundtrack is absolutely incredible

For me there is only one sonic game. I used to play Sonic the Hedgehog on Game Gear using the car power adapter over and over on the highway to Oma's house. I never really got all that into any other sonic games.
