One way a save money is by not buying seasonal decor. I just use things from nature to decorate (squash and pumpkins in the fall, evergreens in winter, flowers and branches from the garden in spring, etc.). Another tip I’ve discovered is that if you shred your lettuce (like romaine) and store it in a glass airtight jar, like the kind IKEA sells, it will last SO MUCH LONGER and not wilt or brown. I store almost everything in glass jars now and have gotten into the habit of food prepping my veggies and storing the cut up peppers and carrots, etc. In glass jars in the fridge. It looks really pretty in the fridge and is a real time saver at dinner when I want to throw together a stir fry. Thanks for your helpful video. I enjoyed it immensely as usual!! 😊💞💞💞

Or keep re-using the same seasonal decor. I used to make or buy one new Christmas decoration each year for my tree. After 20 years, there isn't really any more room, so i didn't buy one this year. Nothing 'matches' (except that I've bought a few from the same craftspeople over the years, so they kind of 'blend') but I love it, and each one has a story.

I've really been enjoying making my own yogurt. It means I can buy one big jug of milk and make a whole gallon of yogurt, rather than buying multiple small yogurt tubs. I understand why you are saying this, but for many people with disabilities there are some single use plastics which cannot be replaced by reusable. Have you ever tried to clean a thickened drink out of a reusable straw? It sets rock hard. Thickened drinks stop people choking. If all single use plastics were banned it would be life threatening for some people.

Well said. And I think you're right. Pity we didn't have this 20 years ago. We may all be in a different place now if we had. 20 years ago it was all fear and uncertainty and too many conflicting "facts". No-one it seemed could deliver the truth. If you believed in climate change you were "another bloody tree hugging hippy" and your opinion was deemed to have no value because of that label. Well, that was my experience here in Ireland 20 years ago anyway. I'm sure it's not just our country that this small minded attitude existed either. Praise be for Ciara and all like her who show us that the lifestyle we craved for ourselves and others is attainable and simply attainable too. The only sacrifice? Well from what I see there isn't one. A simple life is a happy life.

It really is just changing our mindset away from the disposable society that developed over the past 60-70 years. Anyone shopping a hundred years ago were doing this all along - re-usable grocery bags or baskets, meat wrapped in butcher paper rather than styrofoam trays wrapped in plastic, etc.. The more the public expectation/demand is for less plastic and packaging, etc. the more companies will be forced to seek alternatives. We just have to be more aware. All it takes is a little more thought and a commitment.

What a happy sound - the water flowing into your jar and coffee cup. It sounds healthy, waste curbing, not to mention money-saving. This will sound like such a small thing, but looking at my tattered wallet-sized planner makes me smile. I sewed cloth scrap zipper pouches to hold coins and folding money that I added to my planner doing away with the need for a separate billfold. My planner has small slots for any cards/driver's license that I need to keep in my purse. I have repaired this planner several times and absolutely don't want to give it up for a new one. If there comes a time when my planner seems beyond repair, I will probably just put a rubber band around the whole thing and keep going. So much can be accomplished toward zero waste with a good attitude about our possessions. Your attitude is contagious. Diane in NC

For years we have taken our own bags, drinks, soup or sandwiches, snacks etc. Last April we started shopping waste free at a refill shop...we love it! So fast, no waste packaging and in so many cases cheaper! We live in a remote place, it takes us an hour to get to a town to shop, so whilst we are there we get all the jobs done...mending shoes, trawling the charity shops for what we need, petrol, come home via the mill every 3 months to get oats and flour in 12kg paper sacks. We cook from scratch, what we can't compost goes in our bokashi bin...since 23 April 2019 we have managed to keep our waste so low that we have only sent 2x30 litre bin bags to the landfill and we are getting better all the time! You are inspiring and are helping us do more! I am knitting/crocheting my own cloths and skincare pads, I have made my own washable menstrual pads, we are changing to soapnuts, dentatabs and bamboo toothbrushes, we now have a whistler on our stove to heat water and this is used for washing up, drinks, cooking veg....in fact we have recently cooked meals on the stove (like a slow cooker) and can see our electricity has reduced! It means you have to think and maybe plan...but the good glow you get, the satisfaction and big smile when you achieved another reduction in energy, plastic or whatever. Oh! Tried your oat milk this week....delicious! Off to make a tumeric latte with Hey Nutrition Ladys tumeric latte mix and your oat milk...thanks! Bye xx

My zero waste tip was training my husband to use fabric instead of paper napkins. It was difficult at first, but every time I pull them out, I smile, because they are made from old tablecloths and I know I’m saving paper. My other zero waste tip is using old shoe boxes to store things in, as well as beer boxes. I have a sewing business, and I’m always looking for organized storage. The shoe boxes hold pieces of fabric known as “fat quarters” and the beer boxes, two six-pack size, are used to store pieces of embroidery. And if I want, I can cover them all with old fabric.

There are things that can be done "in the name of making more room for bamboo" but that is more the exception and not the rule. I would just hate for people to be discouraged from seeking out bamboo products. Bamboo is an incredible sustainable, eco crop. I would encourage people to know the manufacturing process of the bamboo items they buy but again... let's not discourage good behavior. It's like when the powers-that-be decided to tell Americans that they had popularized quinoa too much and as a result we were starving the quinoa farmers in Peru. Getting Americans to eat something healthy was a miracle in itself but sure enough, the moneyed interests behind dirty food quickly put out anti-quinoa propaganda. In a sea of "evils" bamboo is the angel for humans and for the environment and we just want to be careful that we don't discourage its use.

When I wash raw vegetables for cooking, I try to store that water to water my plants. And I always make my tea by measuring the water in the cup I am drinking or even if I am making tea for more I measure the water in respective cups. And I dnt use tea bags, I use a similar strainer as yours and I store the tea leaves for plant manure.

I also take a reusable grocery bag when shopping and small Colton bags for produce. Lately I’ve been really looking at what I throw away. It’s too easy to just put the trash bin out and forget about it. But all that goes into a landfill and a lot of it just sits there forever! Yikes. My resolution this year is to lessen my mess!

I do all the same things you do, and I also take my own large shopping bag to put everything in. Sometimes we shop at a coop where there are no bags given, so we keep a large container in the back of the car to place everything safely inside. The changes we need will come when we each take responsibility for our own actions. Thanks for the video; love to watch. 😃

My top zero waste items are actually very similar to yours! I take reusable shopping totes with me everywhere. I also have the mesh cotton bags for produce and muslin bags for nuts or dog treats from the bulk bins at a local pet store. I pretty much always carry my Hydro Flask so that I am not tempted to buy anything in disposable bottles while I am out and about. I keep a couple clean handkerchiefs in my purse at all times. When I go to work, I carry my lunch in glass containers or jars. I keep silverware from home in my desk at work. I have glass peanut butter jars that I reuse for storing foods bought from the bulk bins at a local grocery store. I have a bamboo toothbrush, which I love!!! I have even managed to influence my youngest sister to make some changes to live more sustainable. Life is good!

I use the thermos trick also to fill it with cold water from the fridge during the warm months and hot summers (we live in Greece). This way we don't have to open the fridge door fifty times a day just to get another glass of cold water, or make a cool drink :) We keep cold water in the fridge in glass bottles, and refill them as soon as we've emptied them into our thermos jug or bottles.

Many of these things are part of my daily practice too, although I haven’t changed my toothbrushes yet. I need to find super soft ones as I am an overly vigorous brusher from too many years of orthodontia (brushing braces is a big challenge to do well!). I have invested in a good selection of canning jars with the ring lids to store food as I find that the jars that I buy food in aren’t uniform and make storage a bit more challenging. One thing that I would add to the things to do on the go is to pack your own food whenever possible-lunch for if you are working outside the house, snacks and food for when you are traveling. The amount of single-use waste that can come from one meal eaten in take-away containers is astounding! Thanks for another lovely few minutes with you, have a wonderful week!

Pam W, I just use the canning jars because they are big ( I eat a lot of pecans,) and I have so many of them as I use them to keep soups etc. in the fridge- they take-up less space on the fridge shelves ( vertical space rather than sideways).

Thanks for the video! I've found that another helpful thing (I'm from the US) is that if you cannot afford to get solar panels, then you can see if your energy provider has a program with a "green" energy provider. Ours does, and it is only fractionally more money (like, 3 cents a kilowatt or there about).

I was using all sorts like white vinegar, eo’s, Castile, soap nuts, conkers and soda crystals… I did not totally get on with these many things… most come with plastic anyhu… and with one cheap delicates detergent I am good to go! Well done for being plant based… even though my blood type is arhs+ and it ought to suit me…. My friends love them ive made a few. I save them for making my kitchen waste a little less. Little things like that helps. The other thing i like to save save those big big 30-40 lb bags the dog food comes in. They have multiple uses. My best one was that i taped together and added inside cardboard to create a carry wood big pices for the log fire with cutouts for handles. Our house is heated by wood only mostly. For some reason, the idea of boiling a larger amount of water and keeping it in a thermos jug is something I've done only when there are warnings of possible outages or pipe repairs -- I'm going to have to try that out! Otherwise, I've managed to root out all the non-LED bulbs in my house and have saved so many jars that I'm running out of where to put them (although we do have a decent recycling program here, so it's not too bad a problem). I also have a big ol' "disposable" plastic cup from a local convenience store that holds several years' worth of old (plastic) teethbreesh; after a good cleaning with alcohol and/or hydrogen peroxide, they're great tools for cleaning in all kinds of nooks & crannies, and are a cheap alternative to "patterning" or "texturing" tools when working with clay and/or paints. I'm getting ready to experiment with the oldest to see if the handles can be melted down and cast into something new.

I need to rethink about using the kettle -- I overfill! Even though I was using it the next day to water plants, it's still using electricity wastefully. However, we used to make a full pot of coffee and either throw out what was left or drink too much, now we're making half the amount and almost none gets wasted. The next step I'm going to take is remember to bring my reusable coffee mug. I would also like to crochet some open string bags, reusable and, I think, they're very pretty.

Hi Niamh! Very useful video as always, thanks! My absolute fave zero waste items are reusable cotton or hemp bags for shopping, reusable cotton pads & wipes, glass containers and coasters and chopping boards that come from our own logs! My partner made them for me a while ago, and I love having them around the house and smell them every day! In Italy we don't use kettles as we don't really drink that much tea or instant coffee, so that's not a problem. But we wash a lot with the washing machine and we air dry everything as the climate allows that even during the winter, so no big surprises bill wise. Hugs! 🧡❤

Great tips there. When we boil our kettle its only with the amount of water that we need too. I can't stick it when the kettle gets almost full for ONE mug of tea. Trying to go zero waste bit by bit. As light bulbs go, we're replacing them with led bulbs too. And we bring our own bags to the shop too (but hey we're also in ireland and I refuse to pay for a plastic bag when the house is full of bags). It is so hard to go zero waste where we are though (cavan). There is so much packaging on food in supermarkets and there are very few zero waste alternatives here unfortunately. I wish more people would insist on less packaging. Remember there was a day we had that we could return all unnecessary packaging to the shops direct? And the shops would return it to the suppliers? We need that in permanence for a few months. One day has no impact.

I’ve been using reusable shopping and produce bags for a decade. Recently I started using bread and tortilla bags for the dog waste when I walk the dog. (I know, it would be better to make my own bread and tortillas, someday I will. I now make mayonnaise and chocolate syrup and laundry soap from scratch.) It’s usually a lot cheaper to buy the bagged potatoes and oranges where I live rather than bulk, so I take those on my walks and pick up trash...I think I should write Sonicare to request they manufacture bamboo replacement heads for the electric toothbrush.

Lately my biggest zero waste item is simply a bowl with a plate on top. I've been making homemade bread, and all the YT videos and recipes and cookbooks recommend plastic wrap on top of a bowl instead of the traditional damp clean linen towel, but a regular round plate works better than either one, doesn't stick, is easy to clean, and costs nothing. If I were planning my perfect next life, my bread baking equipment would be a glass bowl with a glass plate (or lid) for perfect transparency, but even that's not necessary. Then again, I think I've seen all of those in thrift shops many times.

Now that I live where it rains alot I don't do this as much. As you said..thrifting is s great way to reuse and reduce when looking for storage items or take along containers.
