I was 15 in 1977 and had every single in this list. Then I got married aged 24 and had to sell everything to get a pram for my daughter. This era was my time I saw the Clash in Inverness. The Jam in the Capitol in Aberdeen playing their debut album and saw Suzie and the banshees 3 times. Great times and great memories.

I do agree on a a lot of your selections Chris but I have a few others, One record from 1977 that really stood out for me and still does today was from Squeeze, the song Cat on a Wall, from the Packet of Three EP on Deptford Fun City Records (owned by Miles Copeland) I love the intro it's very Pistol-esque in places with the opening riff/intro, so much energy in it. My other big was Grip by the The Stranglers, again so much energy and aggression and fabulous work/input by all 4 band members especially Dave Greenfield RIP.

Hello Chris. Im viewing from New Zealand , and i was 17 in 1977. I liked Punk back then. My favourite group was the Damned. I had the pleasure of seeing Public Image Ltd in the 1980s, and it was great to see John Lydon perform. We had a small punk scene here in NZ, with the band Suburban Reptiles and the Scavengers being popular. Pretty Vacant is my fave Sex Piatols song too. I liked the Stranglers too. Enjoyed watching the video and throwing my toys out of my pram from time to time :) I don't think The Motors even pretended to be punk. They were more of a Status Quo pub rock cover band. Looking back almost 50 years on, I think "Oh Bondage Up Yours" was the best and most important single released during '77. At the time, for me, it was "God Save The Queen" followed by "Complete Control". I would also have found room for Alternative TV's "How Much Longer" and Chelsea's "Right To Work", but it's all opinion. Probably.

I watched this and the '78 one a few days back, really enjoyable. I turned ten years old in the Summer of '77 and although I'd had records scrounged from my brothers (Bolan, Slade etc) 1977 was the year I started getting new records. I still prefer Holidays in the Sun / Satellite to Pretty Vacant though and The Rats' Mary of the 4th Form a massive single for me then (the lyrics appearing a little creepy now) . The Modern World by The Jam was first bought by my cousin and became the song that changed my life to be honest; I still loved a lot of the punk and new wave tracks, but the sixties bands also beckoned and the Mod revival was on the horizon. Some great 45s here, some unexpected too. Nice to hear a mention of Armadillo, I loved that shop although I went there a few years after you. The Dr Feelgood live album "Stupidity" topped the UK album charts in September 1976 before either "Anarchy" or "New Rose" were released. In ‘77 I was an art student in Bournemouth. I went to any punk gig I could and remember seeing The Stranglers, The Boys and The Jam. When the summer vacation came I moved back up to London and joined a band called first The Monotones and later Berlin as lead singer and rhythm guitarist. We decided to do as many gigs as possible, get tight and take over the world. I had a really brilliant 1977. I took tons of speed, smoked masses of dope, drank as much as possible and had sex with anyone who was willing to.We Played all over England often with Eater and a band called The Maniacs. Thank you for posting this for a while I felt young again.

I'm surprised that i didn't know all of these. Many great songs and bands. There's a song by a Finnish punk band which is actually a love song to Gaye Advert. Very un-punk thing to do. Sax player was Lora Logic ( i don't remember right now did she play on that particular track), don't know how they managed to get her to play on it considering their budget must've been around as much as a used tea bag. I must put my number one as Sex Pistols Holidays In The Sun as it had the incredible intro which in time would help my way in to punk rock music. Pasi

Great video me ode, got me playing my '77 singles. Much prefer complete control to white riot. a few others are. slaughter & the dogs- cranked up, the nosebleeds- ain't been to no music school, the drones - i just want to be myself, Raped - EP. killjoys- johnny won't get to heaven (what's the connection to jocky wilson....?), so many classics, lost a lot of interest in '78, the originality was gone, the media had told everyone what 'punk' was all about and what to wear, in THEIR opinion. '77 defintely was the prime of punk.

So disappointed when it wasn't the Damned, then I read the comments, I hope it isn't too rude to call you a pillock for selling your Damned records. 🙃 At the start you said you saw a few of the bands, I was lucky and saw most of them, some more than once. A good selection, if I went through your 1977 collection of singles, as in your rules, I think I might have came up with a very similar listing. It was a great time in my life, best summed up by Joe Strummer, I'm the white man in the palais Just loo- lookin' for fun Only lookin' for fun Oh, please mister Just leave me alone I'm only Lookin' for fun Lookin' for fun F, U, N Fun, despite all the cow dug written defining punk, F U N was the main reason for me.

I would include ALL those tunes in your ‘bubbling under, not quite sure ‘ list, as Punk. For the simple reason that to me Punk isn't really a sound that you can define and put your finger on, that is set in stone..but more of a ‘period in time’ and a ‘feeling given’. My personal opinion. Keep the great posting up… and hope to see a time when you're able to play the 45s as you do your countdown. .. A little Dansette of similar would suffice and give us listeners the authenticity of the era. 🤔🤷🏼♂️👍🏼

@@thevinylorchard5929 if you were to play youy45s as you did your countdown, just write a disclaimer, firstly ,Thanking all the bands and artists, producers and record labels.. and saying that you ‘do not own the rights’ but if there are any complaints from the people that do ,then to contact you at your channel.. I've seen this approach on many other channels with don't seem to have been closed down. It could possibly work in your favour as many old-school punk tunes are on the smaller independent labels who could welcome the fresh exposure, that's if they're still in operation. great video, some terrific selections most of which i own, strange that you exclude TRB on the grounds that they're 'not punk' yet you include the motors, its all very subjective but i'd have put TRB in if you are including the motors, both bands weren't really 'punk' in the true sense but they were both a part of it, same with the hot rods, all great bands which i love, dancing the night away is an absolute classic, you say that the feelgoods jumped on the punk bandwagon to some extent, with respect that is nonsense, the feelgoods were a great band who actually inspired the punk generation to a large extent and in my opinion never tried to adapt themselves to the punk style in a way that say the vibrators or the stranglers(both existing before punk exploded) did, the feelgoods stuck to their high energy R and B regardless, personally i'd have put slaughter and the dogs bootboys in, the models man of the year, cortinas fascist dictator, one chord wonders by the adverts, killjoys johnny won't get to heaven and maybe baby baby by the vibrators, perhaps also young savage by ultravox! a very different band in 77 to the one with which most people are familiar with! great nostalgic fun, another forgotten classic is radio stars dirty pictures
@thevinylorchard59294 ай бұрын
I found it really knowing what to include or not actually. Love that TRb song. What I really meant about Feelgood was that they were lumped in with punk although predated it. I wonder if they would have had the success they had in late 70s without punk. Love the band. Toyed with Slaughter as I love that song. Also cranked up too. Like cortinas and one chord but Gilmore is one of my favourite from this era. Would love the Killjoys 45. Ultravox! were a terrific band in the early ! version. Haven’t played dirty pictures for years. Brilliant comment Simon. Thank you so much for watching and contributing your thoughts. Going to do a 1979 version but it is mainly new wave and hardly any punk as such. Cheers, Chris

All a matter of taste I suppose, id have had binned that very poor Radiators single , ditto Lurkers, Eater, Vibrators even Don’t Dictate and Oh Bondage were pretty weak singles compared to their better material and substituted with : Dead Boys - Sonic Reducer, Buzzcocks - What Do I Get, Generation X - Your Generation, The Damned - Neat Neat Neat, The Avengers - Car Crash, Subway Sect - Ambition, Wire - Mannequin, XRay Spex - Identity, Snivelling Shits - Bring Me The Head, but spot on with the Saints and Pretty Vacant!

Eaters Dee Generate was actually Roger Bullen from Caterham just South of Croydon in Surrey.
