This is super informative... thank you! I just bought the assegais with DH casing. I’m a poor climber but I want to challenge myself on climbs by putting the 2.5 Assegai up front and possibly a high roller 2, DHR II, or Dissector in the back... and then reward myself on the decent.😎

If you really want a challenge, do Assegai front and back, it will really be sticky to climb with, almost like going through mud lol. It will be super stable on the descents after.

Hey Dustin, I love the geeking out on tires. I'm definitely in that same mindset right now. Keep up the videos. I'm riding here in SoCal, so probably pretty similar dry conditions to you in Boise. I have an Ibis Ripley LS (V3) with 120 rear/140 front. The stock Schwalbe Nobby Nics 2.6 were garbage and once I swapped them out the bike came alive. I went with the Aggressor 2.5 rear/Assegai 2.5 front and I loved the grip and cornering on rails, but they feel so slow to me, my uphill times are much slower, but my downhill times have improved. I then tried Rekon 2.6 front/rear, so fast, both uphill and downhill improved. My biggest issue was lack of grip front and rear. I then went with the Rekon 2.6 rear/Minion DHR2 2.6 front (Worldwide Cycles review), but the lack of grip in the rear was disappointing. I'm now running my Aggressor 2.5 rear/Minion DHR2 2.6 front and I'm pretty happy but the bike still feel heavy and not as playful as it did with the lighter Rekons. I'm Thinking about the Aggressor 2.3 rear/Dissector 2.4 front or Dissector 2.4 rear/front. Are there any weight savings or grip improvements that you have experienced with a dual Dissector setup? I know it's not your favorite rear tire.

I've had the 2.3 and 2.5 Aggressor on my 30mm Hunt Widetrail rims and I've gotta say, the 2.5 is wayyy better. The extra volume means you can run a little softer and soak up those small bumps so it's actually a bit quicker. In UK riding conditions the more spaced out knobs of the 2.5 also means it's much better in the wet and you can run it beyond the 2 weeks of sort of dry conditions we get, braking is also improved. I've been running Assegai front and rear Grip F / Terra R for the last few weeks and I've decided, in slop, they simply don't clear mud as well as the DHF and can be ( as a result? ) a bit vague in directional stability. In summer this may not be an issue and they will be better. I'll try them again then. Last ride I put the DHF Terra back up front and enjoyed the feeling of bite, it's not as consistent as the Ass from side to side but it feels more committed when it's there, more of a "Yep! Yep! Yep!" rather than "Okayyyy" Worth noting that the mud was shallow and that tacky foot slipping stuff in places after a couple of dry days and in those places the DHF was a non issue but the Ass Terra out back was a little undecided as to what was happening, it never let go but it wasn't always interested in following the rest of the bike in a new direction either. As we're in lockdown and my Patella tendon is a bit buggered again anyway limiting the rides, I've put the Aggressor on the rear for less drag and pedal effort which actually puts me back to fave summer combo. Pressure with tubes is 22F 25R, Summer would be 23F 27R
@dustinbjohnson
@dustinbjohnson 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great input and information! I love hearing other peoples experiences and opinions on tires. I've been really happy with the 2.3 aggressor but we are extremely dry here and I always tend to lean towards lighter faster tires especially out back. But I may have to give the 2.5 a try. I only have less then a hand full of ride in wet/mud. Pretty much un rideable here in idaho when the trails are wet so I only run tires for dry. But I totally agree with you on the DHF bite vs the more seemless transition of the assegai. Both are great!
@cornishcactus
@cornishcactus 3 жыл бұрын
Yep in the real dry, esp hardpack surfaces the 2.3 may work better, don't need the bite and spacing of the slightly larger knobs and the extra volume won't be much of an advantage. Have you tried a Minion SS?

I live in Bristol in the UK and it’s constantly wet and muddy here and these tyres grip in the mud like crazy and I can still knock out a 100k without dying. I also run Michelin wild enduro up front and rock r rear. These too have amazing grip, possibly a bit more draggy. Been binging your tire videos! You answered a lot of my questions/concerns. I've been running Dissectors front and rear and felt they were a little slow and I know understand some of the drift in the front. So, should I go DHR2 up front and Aggressor out back? or Dissector/Aggressor? or DHR2/Dissector and Rekon? I ride New England rocky rooty and slick with loose leaves over semi-hard. I like a light fast set up but need something a little tougher for rubbing on rocks. Thanks man!

Heck ya! I've never rode in New England.. but I would definitely go DHR2 up front. Hands down. Now for the rear depends. Super dry conditions I'd go aggressor. If it's damp I'm go dissector, and more wet I'd go dhr2 front and rear. You can try a rekon and see how it does. That's the fastest option. But if it doesn't have enough tracking step up to dissector! And when it's dry go aggressor!

I dont have any time on exo+ just because I keep weight at a minimum and I never tear sidewalls. I think I have maybe once in 8 years. Try Dissector 2.6 front and rekon 2.6 rear. Much better combo. Faster and tons of traction without having the downfall of plus tires.

Hi Dustin great review I recently got the Ibis Ripmo AF that has Assagai 2.5 front and back. Thinking of changing the rear to the Aggressor 2.3 out back. I have wide rims at 35 I believe. Will a 2.3 Aggressor still work or do you recommend something else in a 2.4? DHR2 2.4 or Dissector 2.4 rear if think need something wider for my wheels? It sounds like the 2.5 Aggressor has way bigger nobs than the 2.3 so rolling resistance is significantly better on the 2.3 although the weight is much of factor?

You ever tried DHR II in the rear and Assegai up front? Been doing research on my next set up. I’m going from WTB’s Vigilante (front) and Trail Boss (rear) on an enduro but find them punishing up hill and anything but downhill. Insane grip, but very slow set up. Figured Assegai is a good replacement for Vigilante but don’t wanna loss that Trail Boss, last moment braking power. Thoughts? I also ride in the Appalachian mountains so it’s rocky, easy to rip tires especially with my aggressive riding style.

I have rode that exact combo. Love it! I think for heavy enduro use that is the money setup. Braking is superior. And endless traction. That is a fantastic question!! One I've been stuck on myself. In my experience is a combination of the two. Weight and tread pattern both play a factor. In my experience the Assegai though it's heavy feels like it Rolls faster then the DHF due to the tighter spacing of the knobs. You should really check out the Dissector. Thanks for the video! Right now I'm running DHF 29X2.6 front and rear during winter, however just like some other videos had mentioned. Don't feel super confident in my turns and berms at speed with the transition zone on that tire, feels like I'm gona wash out. Other than that, they're great for everything else. I already purchased an Assagai 2.5exo+ front and 2.5 Agressor DD for my rear for when April rolls around and more trails open up. How much of a difference do you think it makes running the 2.3 rear, vs the 2.5?
@dustinbjohnson
@dustinbjohnson Жыл бұрын
Some of that vague feeling could be the 2.6 tires also. I found 2.6 tires have a lot of tire roll under hard cornering. So I think you’ll like the 2.5 assegai much better! 2.6 tires usually have weaker sidewalls to keep weight down. As far as the aggressor goes, their is a big difference between the 2.3 and 2.5. Almost like 2 completely different tires. The 2.3 has much smaller knobs and feels more XCish. Much more zippy fast feeling. The 2.5 feels more enduro. Still rolls extremely well on steep fast downs. But climbing it feels more draggy then 2.3
@2Philthy
@2Philthy Жыл бұрын
@DUSTIN B. JOHNSON thank you!! I think rather than send the tire back, I'm going to try and run the 2.5s. If it's slowing me down too much on my climbs. I'll aim for the 2.3 rear. Prolly keep the DHFs around and beat them up during the winter months. If I had multiple bikes to try different combos I would, but I don't make a ton of $ and tires ain't cheap either! Lol. I did run 2.3 aggressor front and rear last year on my Polygon and it did fine, i liked them, but I upgraded to a Marin Alpine Trail 7 Enduro bike for more travel. We usually tend to ride about 8-12 miles max, most trails are about half up, half down.

Don't forget to mention tire width and rim width. 2.5 tires on a 30mm rim at 22 PSI will feel a lot like 2.3 tires on a 25mm rim at 28 psi. PSI alone isn't enough info. Also, ride style and terrain is a factor. I do 22psi/F and 25psi/R at 175lbs, with a 2.5 front and a 2.4 rear on 30mm rims. I've been running the DHR2 front and rekon rear lately. Loving it. Bit more grip then dissector/rekon. As soon as it gets loose and dry I'm going to DHR2/aggressor and ill report back. Looks like a combo I'd like

I was dhr f/r, went aggressor/dhr (front). As expected, faster overall riding but lose bit of grip/breaking on the dh's, but overall solid. I now want to try Dissector up front now for more speed/less rolling resistance on the smoother trails, maybe even something faster like...?? Then have set up for dh/aggressive rides, all MTN and light trail riding

So I'm on a rekon right now. Slight drag on climbing with the aggressor. But not as much as a dhr2. But the aggressor carries really fast speed once it gets going. As much as a rekon I'd say. Rekon is just slightly more pedal friendly..
