I went for the 25mm on a hunch because it was comparatively very cheap on Amazon. It's on my gx9 about 60% of the time, 35% being the 100-300 and the rest of my lenses sharing the rest. It is just very very good

I’m very much a budget photographer. I have a G2 bought 2011, and a G80 bought 2019. Lenses are the kit 14-45mm, the 45-200mm and my favourite 12-60mm. Your video identifies how difficult it can be to get the desired bokeh with the high aperture. I will definitely be looking for a single lens probably 15mm to get crisp exposures.

That is my favorite MFT lens it is just so solid and can actually get decent bokeh. The 42.5 can also be great for bokeh and I think is cheaper

YES!! I fully agree with your #1 choice..!! I actually bought this lens before I owned a M4/3 camera of my own. Small,, sharp as a lazer-edged tack and has manual f-stops. Beautiful piece of gear. I did not have the same results with my 45-150--I found it low contrast and weak edge sharpness outside of the center of the zoom and f-stop range. I did replace it with the 45-175,,which is lesser known in N. America. (popular in Asia) It appears to be a step-up in stabilization and coating,,and weirdly has a power zoom,,,which turned out to be a video bonus. Thanks for your comparisons-- and especially on the Sigma insights...enjoyed the video.

Thank you for this video. I'm new to videography aside from having shot some stuff on my smart phone earlier. I just recently got a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, but so far I haven't got any lenses for it at all. I'm not looking to become super professional, so I would like to have maybe just one or two lenses that I use for most of my shots. However, with my limited knowledge it's difficult to know which lens or lenses suit my particular needs. I'm mostly going to do overhead shots of a bench in order to document my work on camera. I will use a tripod and have the camera look down onto the bench at an angle. I don't need anything super wide, and I don't want anything that can easily create distortion. I'd like a lens that is easy to work with as a beginner. Having at least some decent focal depth would be good too. Low light capabilities is important for me, as I know I will have to take low light shots in some particular situations. Do you have any good recommendation for a MFT lens that would suit me, based on my particular use case? Will the ones you mentioned in this video still work well for me?

Interesting choices. I use the G9 for video after years and years with the GH3 and GH4. Stabilization has been a real game changer for me. For doc and event work, my primary lens is the Canon 24-105L on the Speedbooster XL. This gives a 30-135mm equivalent on the G9 with f2.5 across the zoom range. It's very useful because of this reach. Even the PanaLeica 12-60 doesn't have this reach or aperture. In very low light doc or event work, I use the Sigma 18-35 on Speedbooster XL. A tiny bit of vignetting at the wide end, but otherwise fine. For controlled situations, corporate and commercial work, I use the Voigtlander primes. They have a beautiful organic look that is more like 'cinema' than any other lens I own. Stop them down to at least f1.2 or f1.4 as they have a lot of glow wide open. Stills are another matter. Olympus primes, especially the 25/1.8, 17/1.2 and 45/1.2 are amazing. Fast autofocus, beautiful rendering, its all there.

The 12-35 is a great lens for me with f2.8 .. but it suffer from distortion 😣. Unfortunately zcam e2 does not correct the distortion and really looking for an alternative lens .. could you suggest me one !! My concern is to get same color tone when swapping lenses
@jakefelzien

Let me think... not super familiar with the distortion issue. Can it be fixed in post in Resolve? As far as a recommend, there aren't a lot of other great options that are better than the 13-25 if you are wanting a direct replacement. But you could get like a 25 prime and a 15 prime? I love both of those lenses. Or you could go the speed booster route and adapt an EF lense with a similar FF 24-70 range. lots of options

I have a gx80 and these lenses: - 14-42 Kit (not a big fan of it tbh, as its not very sharp and plastiky) - 25mm 1.7, absolutely love it - 45-150 4-5.6, the 45-100mm range is good, from 100-150mm it does have its weaknesses. But as its affordable, its a good option for people on a budget (like me haha :D ). - Olympus 9-18mm, it was a pretty bargain (200 euros) for an ultrawide. Not fast, a bit plastiky, but its very small and therefore pairs perfectly with my gx80. It gets its job done and the Leica 8-18mm was too expensive for me. I use the 45-150 and 9-18 frequently for landscape photography and the 25mm for video. Another honorable mention would be the Sigma prime trio. Especially the 16mm f1.4 is interesting for me, but the 15mm f1.7 could be fantastic too.

@@jakefelzien Hi Jake, Thanks for the reply. I'd recommend that you use that 42.5mm lens sometime when you'd otherwise use that 25mm. What happened to me was that I was at a wedding in Las Vegas and left my 25mm at home. I had the 42.5mm on the camera at a cocktail party the night before the wedding. I will say that the photos were "up close and personal", but they also were fantastic. The bokeh was beautiful, and the low light performance was fantastic. I kept the lens on the camera for the entire evening, and even for video. It's now a regular in my kit, but I just ordered the Leica 15mm. I guess that I've got that 25mm bracketed. LOL.

How anybody could not have 25mm f1.7? Me :) Since 20mm/f1.7 came as kit lens with GF1 I feel like 25mm and 17mm are too similar. And 20mm seems to match natural field of view pretty well. But I'm considering Pergear 25mm/f.7 for fun with imperfect cheap lens with manual focus.

I own 6 lenses, along with the 25mm and the 45-150 kit lens (my #3) but for me it's the 42.5 f1.7 (#2) and the sharp 35-100 f2.8 do ok. I'll only use MFT for well lit or outdoor applications where I don't want to lug around much heavier gear as I'm doing what I call casual shooting. Their weakness is in low light situations using high iso or if cropping/enlarging is intended. I chose the GX85 because small size matters,. Using a body the same size as a mirrorless full frame Z7 makes no sense to me. A high resolution full frame sensor is on a whole different level. Not fair to compare the two systems especially when shooting weddings or events. My Samsung S10 image quality isn't far from MFT, so my next smartphone upgrade may signal the end of MFT for me, as ridiculous as that would have sounded only a few years ago. Probably why Panasonic went full frame and Olympus is dying.

@jakefelzien 3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree Tom, it is so competitive these days. and I think MFT will always have a place, but there are people who still shoot film as well. But that is widely considered dead. I think the writing is on the wall, the market is pushing full frame, it has a lot of great advantages. Also, cannons new RF lenses are looking so small. that f4 70-200 is super intriguing for full frame users

@@jakefelzien I still shoot film on occasion to keep me on my toes and the pure love of photography. I started shooting more than 50 years ago in high school, so with a dozen vintage cameras sitting on a display shelf I can't resist the urge to use some of them. Only reason for not becoming a full time pro was because I could earn much more taking other directions. Family first. Having retired 13 years ago, I now do paying gigs to supplement my addiction to photography and keeping up with the "latest" technologies, but mostly for enjoyment. I also keeps me young. Good luck yo you.

I agree with your choices. For me, the best lenses for photography with mft are the 15mm f1.7 and the 25mm f1.7 in my gx85. For video it is the sigma 18-35 with speedbooster on the gh5. AF sucks anyway, and the gh5 is already big enough for the sigma. And I think the extra weight helps for handheld video. But the sigma with the GX85 is a no no.

I sadly agree with 12-35/f2.8mm. It has some use: bad, dull winter weather and (late) evening hand-held city shots. Basically low light static scenes. If you want zoom 12-60mm kit lens is more versatile, it does not suffer from lens flare and optical quality is the same. If you want low aperture then lenses without zoom are better. 45-150 surprised me a bit, but I considered it few times despite having 45-200. But 45-200 is heavy and it basically ends somewhere at 100 or 120mm. Beyond that image is blurred and zooming further does not show more details. My favorites right now are 12-60/f3.5-5.6, 20mm/f1.7 and Oly 45mm/f1.8 ... there's nothing special about the first one, it's just super versatile. On my "considering to buy" list are 45-150, pergear 25mm/f1.8 and laowa super wide angle (8mm?).

Pretentious photographers worry so much about bokeh and background blur. What, it's not enough when you're uploading it on Instagram and viewing them in tiny images? Or after KZfaq beats the hell out of your upload and compressed your video? F/2.8 in mft is more than enough and 12-35mm will cover about 80% of your focal needs. Unless you're strictly a macro/wildlife photographer.

@Swiftray Aperture, ISO, and focal length are all affected when talking about full-frame equivalency. This isn't important to everyone, but as someone that shoots acress 3 sensors, it helps me get similar shots. The math gets even more interesting with active speedboosters and passive adapters that I accidentally got a minor in math!!
