For people who want the higher portion of the delays to come through, potentially adding a De-esser before your delay in the send chain can give you a tiny bit more wiggle room as far as when the delay vocals will start to poke out of the mix (at least in my experience)

imogen heap has an interesting way to do this also, she copies the vocal and manually slices out all the sibilant and plosives, then feeds that into the delay

Just found your channel and you´ve got some really good crash course material for many of my favorite VST plugins! I love that you do fair A/B comparisons in your videos, with comparable sound levels instead of showing something unprocessed that sounds low in volume and then the loud processed thing (which pleases most ears and make them think it´s better, cause it´s louder and/or has stronger volume, but probably squashed and undynamic). Just pure gold

I love how you explain not only what to do and how to do it, but more importantly, why? When you understand the concept behind a technique, and what the goal is, then you can apply it in different ways, or perhaps not applying it at all in certain situations that don't call for it, instead of just mechanizing it or copying it. I tend to use the doubler effect on the Waves Manny's delay plugin, which modulates the pitch as well, and really fattens it up. But I like your approach when something more subtle is required. Rolling off those frequencies really does the trick. And that almost goes for all effects, including reverb. BTW, just subscribed. You got it.

Up until now I've avoided delays or used them sparingly at best relying more on reverbs and have some good results, but also some I haven't been happy with. These tricks give me a much better idea how I can use delay successfully in my music. I've got the H-Series so will try out these tricks with some of my recordings - this is a really good overview on how to use delay - better than I've seen in a lot of other videos....... I feel like I can put this to immediate use. Thanks!

Just found you and watched a couple of your vids. Less is more! A man after my own heart. Just because one can doesn't always mean one should. With all of the tools available to us today it's way easy to over do it and just wash out a mix giving it no punch or definition and we're going "I've got fifteen plugs on this so why doesn't it sound good" lol! I like your approach even tho my music is definitely a different genre, the principles still remain largely the same for a clean punchy defined mix. I only wish I had had these tools when I was doing my first six CD's. We hardly had enough tracks back then to do the job much less the plugins and of course no computer at all. For that matter, the first studio I worked in back in the 60's had two Ampex 2 tracks and we spliced quarter inch tape with a razor blade. Now we have Disney world on a lap top lol! Not quite that simple, but you get the point. Kudos my friend!

hey, i’ve watched the video about a month or 1.5 ago and actually tried these delay techniques pretty much exactly the way they are presented here just to test out how they would show themselves in different scenarios straight “out of the box”, and gotta say these points are pretty solid. after that I aimed to bring some of my creative thought to the concept and found that there’s a great trick that may be added on top of any of these delays: basically it’s working separately on the filters (here you use the ones that are provided in delay plugins) as a separate closing step in a chain - use any separate filter, 3rd prty or included in a DAW, that supports sidechain input and feed it with the signal of dry vox, so it responses to its dynamics and moves cutoff frequency reacting to side-chained signal. through experimenting with it i preferred using both HP and LP filters this way. LP can be targeted at frequencies close to what you’ve shown here, and HP - somewhere around the fundamental of a typical vocal performance (~200Hz), setting the amplitude of the filters to move within slight spread of 3-7%, with resonance set for both at around 10%-11% (static value, not affected by side-chain). pretty much worked great with every delay from this video on different vocal tracks in various projects regardless of any input differences. summing up - brightens up the overall vocal performance in a dynamic manner in sync with the elements of a track & filters’ reactive subtle resonant movements add just a sparkle of characteristic sweep to resulting sound image. since the movement is really subtle within the specified few percentage points, it comes across causing no audible harshness to the sound, but rather enriches it. anyway, if anyone would be bored (loool) - feel free to try this out, worked like a charm in all of my tests. it’s highly possible that you will find it to be working as well. Bobby, thanks for the tips, turned out to be useful in my workflow.

Wait... you apply all three approaches together to the track?? 🤯 I use approach 3 on every mix, usually shorter delays and often use a dotted or triplet on the one channel (not saying what I'm doing is right/good). All three seems like it would be busy and aren't you doubling up at least one of the delays (in approach 1 you use a 1/4 delay and then you apply the same delay to one of the channels in approach 3). I will definitely give it a try - creating space for the vocal is so important especially in heavier tracks. Love your channel, your explanation, and the FB group. Thank you!

this is an awesome technique. thanks Bobby! would you recommend doing this only to the main vocal or to harmonies as well?
@RaytownProductions
@RaytownProductions Жыл бұрын
I know this is a generic answer here but it depends haha. Sometimes the song sounds really good when the harmonies on the sides are really dry and tight. Other times it's cool to give the harmonies a ping pong delay to help make them feel more 3D. Most of the time I would say I probably use a lot of these tricks on the harmonies as well. Hope that helps!
