Great list, Arthur! My two cents: If you're just getting started, get the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and the Sigma 23 mm f1.4 (surprised you didn't include it!). This combo will cover 95% of your needs - landscape, portraits, street, semi-macro shots, and even use the first one as a webcam. The Sigma 23 mm f1.4 is the best lens for family gatherings, parties, and low-light photos IMO.

Sigma 23mm F.4 probably can't really compete with the viltrox 27mm F1.2 at this point. It is surely smaller and the optical performance can be identical but the F1.2 wins and the bokeh is not as busy as the Sigma and more pleasing. AF are very identical. I got high success rate in both and I really can't tell which one is better or worse so it's a tie for me for AF. This come from my personal experience and I have sold Sigma 30mm and Sigma 23 F1.4 away after I got the viltrox 27mm for a few months. Though one really cant go wrong with either but I like the Viltrox more despite being slightly heavier lens.

@@rsat9526is the difference in bokeh between a f1.4 and f1.2 really that big? I'm curious about it, is there a video with this topic? I would believe immediately that there is a noticible difference between a f1.2 and a f1.8
@rsat9526
@rsat9526 2 ай бұрын
@@Sony-Fanboy I never said its big? Where did you get that from? I said the bokeh difference is busier on the Sigma. For the record I owned Sigma 23,56 and 1850mm so comparing images between them is something I had to do naturally but the Viltrox is better for me. This does not mean the 23 is bad at all. Beside…. You can pretty much search for the video to see the looks of bokeh on both to thee the pattern easily. While the DOFvis not a vast difference but light performance is very noticeable though on F1.2.

@@rsat9526 dude calm down, there no need to react like so confrontational. My words are not a personal attack. I'm only curious in a sincere way about the bokeh differences between a f1.2 , f1.4 and f1.8...If this Viltrox 27mm is your new favorite lens then it's totally fine. I have read your previous message as well.

The Viltrox 27 1.2 is my favourite lens to shoot with, it used to be the Sigma 56 1.4 but you are right about how special the images that come out of the 27 are. Immensely pleasing.
@rsat9526
@rsat9526 2 ай бұрын
Agreed. It also replaces my Sigma 18-50mm these days. I only pick the Sigma 18-50mm up when I really need wider focal length. For Sigma 56mm F1.4, I really use it a lot less but I plan to sell it for Viltrox 75mm F1.2 for better reach. Back to Sigma 56mm vs Viltorx 27 mm, I feel 56mm and 27mm are not that far apart when really go out. I do get further reach from the Sigma but that's it.....and image quality wise they are almost the same except the Viltrox has F1.2 and more pleasing bokeh.

@@rsat9526 I have both Sigma 56mm and Viltrox 75mm. The latter only comes out in professional portrait shoots, but the 56 is so small. If you can afford to have both, the Sigma is a great thing to be able to take on any trip without worrying about weight

Gotta give the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 some love. The fact that it's under $300 is insane considering how good it is. I've seen the Northern Lights, tornadoes, the milky way with it plus it's good for portraits and product photography. Only real downside is that the minimum focus distance is almost 12 inches, but even then the pros outweigh the cons by a large degree.

The Sigma 56mm is my sharpest lens. It's fantastic for portraits. The 18-50 constantly surprises me by being sharper than I expected (small and light). The Sony 11mm f/1.8 fills a gap for me. It's a good little lens but I don't use it much. The 16mm f/1.4 is wide and sharp. I've learned to rely on it when I have to shoot in low light. Lenses I've sold off include the Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS. It just never thrilled me. I sold off the 18-135. I liked the reach but it too didn't thrill me. Sharpness was ok but it disappointed me to the point of me skipping over it when choosing a lens for the day. I didn't care for the variable focal range. Good review Arthur. I often return to your channel when I want to learn about new lenses or body's. You give real world reviews that are easy to watch.

The Sigma 56mm is definitely so good. I love it but the Viltrox 27mm F1.2 kinda replaces it most of the time these days. It does the job well enough and more flexible focal length so that I do not have to switch the lens. The only good thing which keep me from selling it for Viltrox 75mm F.2 are budget and focal length. When I got enough saving (soon) I might sell it for the Viltrox 75mm or perhaps get the Sony 70-350mm.

Thank you! Interesting selection. There is no right or wrong lenses. Everything is contextually dependent. That is awesome that you have discovered your favourites. If you're on a tight budget but still want a reliable lens for all your photography needs, the Tamron 18-300 is a great pick. Thanks to its power zoom and constant aperture, the Sony 18-105 is incredibly versatile for filming. Obviously these do not cover all scenarios but are single lens solutions for many purposes. Viltrox 75mm seems to be worth to try.

I was coming to comment the same. I’ve owned both, and while the Sigma is fantastic….. the Sony is just that little bit better and sooooo much lighter. The size to me is a big selling point. Arthur is spot on when he says it’s more refined. Also the lack of the 70-350 on this list baffles me. That lens borderline justifies me keeping APS-C even after getting into full frame.

I love your videos and how well you go through gear! However, I think it is important to note that if you want to shoot wildlife or anything else using a zoom, then you should keep in mind, that Arthur does not do this a whole lot. Me personally, I don't care too much for portrait, and I have little need for multiple wide angle lenses, so I would recommend having the Sony G OSS 70-350 4.5-6.3 or something similar. When I pair this with any of the three lenses you mentioned with the Sigma 18-50mm then I honestly have 99% of my shoots covered. It could be well complemented with a nice prime lens :) Great video!

Certainly an interesting 5-lens lineup there, I certainly couldn't agree more with both the Sigma 16mm and the 18-50mm F2.8 as well. My only gripe with the 18-50 is that its not a 16-50 instead (the old Sony SAL1650 was a favourite in my a-mount days), there is just something special about the 16mm on aps-c. I have no experience with any Viltrox lenses but for one to knock the Sigma 56mm F1.4 off the list, that 75mm F1.2 must be very special indeed. Keep up the great work with the videos, take care. 👍👍

I've been using my a6700 since got it on launch day. My go to lens has been the Tamron 17-70, it is amazing, but it is heavy. I use that for shooting with models. For street photography, love the Sony 20mm, 35mm, and 50mm. I can have one on the camera, and carry two in pockets, for an incognito wandering and street shooting. I have the Sony 70-350mm for wildlife or sport shooting. I'm thinking of getting into videography, and think I'll use my 35 or 50 mm Sony's for that. I also have a Rokinon 12mm Ultrawide, but don't use it that often. For waterfalls and astrophotography, it works very well.

My one-and-done lens is the Tamron 17-70mm 2.8. I was also considering the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 but because the Tamron is wider and has considerably more reach, has OIS, weather sealed and gives you better bokeh when zoomed-in (70mm vs 50mm of Sigma) then to me it was a no brainer. It is bigger but that doesn't really bother me. For the price, the Sigma is still an incredible choice though. For my street and low light, 23mm Sigma 1.4 -- for landscape Yongnuo 11mm 1.8. I wanted to consider the Viltrox but multiple shops told me that Viltrox is their most returned lens because it breaks in less than a year of use. They also receive multiple DOA Viltrox lenses. So I'm steering clear of the brand ... for now at least

What filter(s) do you tend to use when you're shooting out in the day time fully open at 1.2 - 1.8? I'm really thinking of upgrading my 6400 to the 6700 (or possibly save up more for full frame). I want the IBIS since my main lens, the Sigma 16 doesn't have any stabilization built in.

I have the Sigma 18-50, Sigma 56, and the Viltrox 13mm. I felt that the Sony 11mm is just a little too wide for me, and 13mm is more visually interesting to me than the Sigma 16, as brilliant as that lens is. Now I just crave more, Sony 18-135, 70-350, Tamron 18-300. I need to get out and just shoot more

If you want something with a reach on e-mount apsc, there's hardly any way around it. Sizewise its almost the same as the Viltrox 75mm, so its big but still small enough, that I carry it in my bag just in case I need it. I don't have any comparison to other Telephoto lenses, but there's nothing to complain about the optical performance. Silent, fast, sharp. The F6.3 means, that you will not catch a flying bird in the dusk/dawn or at night. But its still ok on a cloudy afternoon with a 1/2000 shutter. The only real downside is the prize, but even that is a bargain, if you compare it to similar lenses for fullframe. I can definetly reccomend it.

Running the two viltrox also in my lens line-up meanwhile. I would love to get rid off my Tamron 17-70 but there is not really something to replace it, while the Sigma 18-50 ends up at 50 any meanwhile my next lens to take things up at the long end is my Sigma 100-400 which would make it a gap from 50 to 100. We definitely need something to fill in here. I personally would add a zoom lens on the short end, either the Tamron 11-20 which I own or the Sigma 10-18.

The advantage with APSC Sony Cameras and Lenses are compactness, so I would choose Venus Optics Laowa 9mm 2.8 Zero-D, Sony 15mm 1.4 G, from here I will jump to full frame Lenses ! Fx Zeiss Loxia Distagon 2.8 T* (I do not need aperture 1.4 !), Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 T* ZA (a few month ago I saw one as low as US$180 included taxes at my local store and they had five of them for US$360 each), Zeiss Batis Sonnar 85mm 1.8 T* (I do not need aperture 1.2 !). Remember there are a lot of full frame Lenses that can be used on Sony APC Cameras ! In total, this set will be more compact and light weight than Arthurs set.

i have all 4 sigma primes, and viltrox 27 1.2 too. I will be selling it. There is nothing to justify monstrous weight, size and atrocious vignette at 1.2 - sigma 23 has better af in video and photo, only slight vignette wide open, and it is much smaller and lighter. Pros of the viltrox are small - punchier colors, slightly better sharpness wide open, slightly better bokeh, aperture ring. I think apsc shooters are just enamoured with 1.2, or 0.95 etc. your photography gets better with time at f2.8 or f4, not at 1.2))

On top of all that the “promised” 30 days now turned into 7 day trial. Since I bought the tamron 18-300mm it's my always on lens. 300mm is perfect for wildlife and also portraits of people. 18mm has a very close focal distance. I sold the sigma 18 to 50 as it was not wide enough with 18 and also not tele zoom enough with 50.
@harshil102
@harshil102 2 ай бұрын
The Sigma 18-50mm and the Sony 18-135mm keep me on APS-C. If not for them, I'd just go full frame since nearly all the nice fast APS-C primes will be as big or bigger than equivalent FF primes when accounting for higher ISO capability. The 27mm and 75mm Viltrox lenses for example are equivalent to a 40mm 1.8 and 107.5mm 1.8 respectively. The Samyang 45mm 1.8 FF lens is much smaller, lighter, and cheaper. The fast 107.5mm or any tele lens really is harder to find, let alone staying compact in FF. But the Viltrox 85mm 1.8 would be close enough in my opinion and that's also smaller, lighter, and cheaper. The Sigma 16mm 1.4 is big compared to the Samyang 24mm 1.8 but there's even more options at this wide end especially since f1.4 is appx f2.1 FF equivalent so less than a stop slower at f2.8 can save a lot of size. I just need to figure out if I'm more of a zoom person or a prime person long term. Right now I prefer zooms, but I'm also pretty amateur and producing a lot of mediocre pictures between good ones using zooms. So medium/long term I'll see what happens but I definitely think primes favor FF whereas compact zooms favor APS-C.

I have the sigma prime trio. I find the 16mm to lack some clarity… granted, it’s much wider so my expectations should be different, but focus and sharpness seem to me to get better as the focal length gets longer from the 16 to 30 to 56mm, the longer being the crispest. Maybe it’s the bokeh fooling me.

@Edwin--
@Edwin-- Ай бұрын
I would not do it. These cameras have about the same age and sensor resolution. So all you're gaining is a larger sensor, larger body, better battery performance, but I don't think that really significantly translates into image quality, maybe somewhat in low light. If you really like a step up, it would be better to go for a newer generation of camera with a newer sensor type. They have higher resolution, often now 2 dual native ISO's, better low light performance, continuous eye auto-focus in both photo and video, 10-bit video etc. I think that would be a better longterm investment than an A7iii. An A7iii is a very good camera though, but released in 2018 and tech has developed since. If you do mainly photography and you can find a good A7Riii (which already has 2 newer models), that could be worth doing as upgrade. That sensor is amazing, is also 42 megapixel and not 24 megapixel. I think there you will see a real bump in quality over the A6100.

The 27mm is more versatile, as it is in between 35 - 50mm full-frame equivalent focal range, which likely gets the most use. The 75mm however, combined with the f1.2 aperture, will give you the better compression and bokeh but is a more niche lens to use.
