i am using drop a as my "standard" tuning, but one alternative tuning I use on my six string would be dropping down the low A to F#. so now when you do a power chord on the low 2 strings you got an octave. barely use it to play those octaves but it gives the possibility for interesting chord-voicings. on my 8string I like to use my drops with a low E on top - 6string version would be Adadgb. and also, but thats where it gets tricky with string tension I tried going down to E on my 6string. So you got Eea etc. very different but also very fun. Yes those tunings djent, but I like to built my songs around nice chords and put the djent on top If I choose to, generally I would consider my playing-style to be more deftones-ish, I am not a super technical player, so I try to come up with interesting chords instead. I use a standard scale tele, 72/74- 11/12 - used to have 80´s on it but thats more suitable for my 8string. on that I even had 85´s at one point, chugging on that low e really works with that. Thanks for your inspiration Bill, will try a few of these! :)

These posts are always inspiring. This may or may not be of value, and it's coming from somebody who's just learning ambient guitar. But, I would highly recommend the Thalia Capo for baritone guitar if changing tunings with a capo. They are designed to work with individual fretboard radius dimensions. They are a bit heavy and expensive, but well-made and keep the guitar in tune. I started out using a Kyser 12-string Capo ( for extra strength) on my Taylor 416 LTD baritone, but the Thalia is so much better IMHO. I use it in conjunction with my collection of Kyser partial Capos, because the Thalia is so good as a pseudo "nut" for the guitar, it makes using an additional partial capo in conjunction a much better experience.

Something else I'd like to share is that it is kind of cool to record a standard guitar with an alternative tuning and then lay down track with another guitar that has Nashville tuning strings that's in the same alternative tuning scheme. It weaves a rich tapestry of sound ( I can't believe I just wrote that!) and allows you to use different effects on each. Sometimes it's good just to leave the Nashville tuning string guitar track with little to no effects at all. It really has a nice harmonic overtone. It's like playing 3D chess with sound.

You know, I am very boring and love standard tuning! But my second favourite is drop C# tuning (one semitones down and then drop). You can a little lower but it's not too crazy.

I’ve been playing in G Standard & Drop F. I started off using it for really heavy Doom Metal like some of the bands today who tune almost as low as a bass. Lately I’ve been loving it for softer psychedelic ambient sounds. It can sound really pretty yet also dark & evil at the same time.

@CiteWhyclosa

@@matt79hzwell, if you’re playing songs meant for standard guitar tuning, it’s tuned a fifth down from standard, so you’ll often get far more throaty and deep sounding versions of old classics. If you’re attempting to play songs you’re used to in their intended keys you’ll need to capo on the fifth fret. As for how to play a baritone, treat it like a new instrument and explore all the sonic capabilities!!ill bet you’ll find yourself lost (in a good way) playing a baritone. Open chords always sound best to me, personally. But there is a lot to be said for power and barred chords. It oftentimes sounds so much more powerful through a baritone.

I have a baritone being built from parts right now. I had purchased the body and neck several years ago but issues of time and budget intervened. Hey just incase you still have this problem, I have an Ibanez which I'm pretty sure is exactly the same scale length and I recently bought some "mammoth slinky" 0.12 gauge guitar strings and it has enough tension to be able to go to baritone standard tuning or even as low as drop G#. So I'd recommend buying some thicker strings but just make sure they'll fit your guitar.

So, I just picked up the White Gibson Bari SG (Unofficial Buckethead). It has light strings on now. I just bought some 13-62 strings for it and I like the idea of standard A tuning because it seems very understandable, that is same as the notes on the typical 5th fret one octave down. I also like that I get a whole octive lower of Bb which allot of Jazz tunes are in. Think the strings are heavy enough. I guess when I try out I will know. Also wondering if you have tried flat wound strings on it and what you think. Thanks

In case you still read comments here, thx first of all and a Q: i got my first baritone and tune it as if the lowest strings of an 8 string, so all in fifths, all down half a step. So F, A#,D#,G#,C#,F#. Tension is all fine. But, is it common to forego the 4th tuning of the two highest strings? I‘ve only been playing bass before so have not gotten accustomed to the guitar intervals yet, and am not sure if I‘m missing out too much or not. Thanks

I'm loving triple drop G... it's essentially a fifths style- G D G D G D. I got the idea from (trying to) learning Hindustan/ Raga stuff. But it's great for Doom & Ambient because you can just rake up the strings & get great harmonic sounds. I do the same on a guitar with CGCGCG... really awesome if you got a fretless. For my Fretless bass I'm using DADA which makes some fab drones. There's pluses & minuses with any tuning- but this is a fun one! I'm itching to try a version of Fripps' New Standard Tuning on Baritone. Pardon my long rambling. Mr CO Orion- you rock, great chan yo!

@@chordsoforion Was hoping a EHX Pitchfork + or Digitech Drop would get me in the ballpark, but I think to get these amazing sounds I'd need a Baritone guitar. I have a strat, acoustic and bass. Like to have just what's needed.

Great video. Question, can a baritone like that PRS handle, B standard, drop a, and c standard without having to be adjusting the truss rod all the time? What string gauges would you recommend for that?
@chordsoforion
@chordsoforion 5 жыл бұрын
Drop A is no problem, but I would be a little concerned about drop C on this guitar using the stock strings. If I were you, I would use one of the online string tension calculator to see how much tension this would produce.

Hello, I'm in the process of building a "Telecaster Like" baritone right now and still considering different pickups. Can you inform me of the model name of the guitar you are using in this video? I'm listening around now for pickups that are 1.) Clear and stringy 2.) Rich with a llittle sweetness and, 3.) Are not muddy or congested in the lower mids. The tone you get in this video is very nice and very close to the list of attributes I'm looking for in a pickup, especially for a neck pickup. During covid I decided to learn a completely new style of acoustic guitar that I had never done before and that I found beautiful. That eventually led me to celtic finger style, and guitar material that is like that. Stephen Wake, Pierre Bensusan, Michael Hedges. I managed to learn and play a number of tunes well that had enchanted me for years. This was on the acoustic but set out to build an electric that would be used primarily for this kind of music, and designed to be optimized for this. So, I have no interest in strumming or using a pick on this guitar - I have my regular Strat for everything else. If I could find out the make and specs on your pickups that would be great! Love your videos and thank for all your efforts in making them available to us! Best, Phil Donovan

The guitar in this video is the PRS SE-277 Semi-hollow baritone. The pickups are the stock P-90 style "soapbar" pickups. I have idea what the specs are. I would guess you could get a similar tone by getting any kind of P-90 pickup.

I finally got a baritone guitar by repurposing my 1994 strat and a local luthier is putting a 29 inch neck that he made by hand. We will be doing Half Nashville Tuning tuned to A or Bb A D G(octave up) C(octave up) E A. Basically like Pat Metheny. Note that the middle strings are higher. And I will be using 72 to 14. The middle 2 will be normal guitar which I plan to 15 and 11/12

So, I write songs, and I’ve noticed my vocal range usually works really well if my guitar is tuned to D! Is it worth buying a baritone guitar and tuning it to D to accompany my vocal range ? Also, will my voice and tone of the guitar blend too much ?

Love all the contributions to ambient guitar. I can't say how many purchases I've made based on your playing/ info/ reviews. Thanks so much!!! I was wondering if there are any sonic differences between this PRS 277 in this vid, and the sunburst you've used on another vid? Also my funds are limited, and there are no baritones in my area, that I could find...Do you have a favorite electric baritone sonically? Many thx again.

@chordsoforion 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! As far as the SE277s go, there is no sonic difference between the grey-black one and the sunburst. There is however, a small difference in the feel of the neck. The sunburst is just a wee bit chunkier. I am sure it is just variance in the manufacturing tolerance. And yes - the semi-hollow PRS is my current fav, although I still love my Tele baritone.

Weird question but I bought a Danelectro baritone guitar from a guy who's a pro bass player. The strings he has on it are much thicker than regular guitar strings so I'm just wondering does anyone have any idea what they might be because I really like them. I have 10 gauge strings on my regular electric guitars and the 6th string on this baritone is about twice the thickness of my regular 10 gauge 6th string. The 3rd string on the baritone is around the same thickness as the low E string on my regular guitar and the 1st string on the baritone is around the same thickness as the D string on my regular guitar. It feels almost like playing a 6 string bass. If anyone has any ideas on what strings he has on the baritone, I'd appreciate it!

Hi bearded guru,first of all good job on your alternative approach to guitar,I like it a lot. I have a uestion for you,can I tune a baritone acoustic in real open c or the one step higher is gonna put too much tension on the instrument?
@chordsoforion

Hey Christian - it all depend on the string gauge. I would use one of the online string tension calculators to make sure your desired tuning works with the scale length of the guitar.

I'm curious... Has anyone made a 12 string baritone acoustic ambient song? Imagine a 12 string baritone acoustic with massive hall reverb any maybe some delay. The chords would sound so full and beautiful. I could be wrong though. Would be awesome if you can test that out Bill, if you have a 12 string acoustic of course.

would baritone guitars like the SE277 or Squier Jazzmaster Baritone be able to support standard C (Maj 3rd lower from standard E)? if not, what could i do on my regular scaled guitar to tune it lower with the buzzing/flappy sounds?
@chordsoforion
@chordsoforion 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but i suspect you will need to put lighter than usual strings on the baritone because of the longer scale length. If you want to use a standard scale guitar, just experiment with a heavier gauge string.
