One big thing with drawers - KNOW what you’re going to store there so you know how many/how tall they need to be and how wide/deep/tall the INSIDE measurements of those drawers are and measure your stuff. Otherwise adjustable shelves with pullouts MIGHT be a better solution, especially if you have found yourself adjusting the heights of your shelves in the past. Drawers are by far more convenient than opening a door and then a pullout, but if you just randomly go with drawers and then find what you want to store there won’t fit you’re going to be upset with yourself. For those who aren’t detail oriented that step is going to be painful but totally worth it in the end.

Best part if this whole video is about expectations! Homework on the whole process and even your own home is huge. So you're prepared for anything to come at you, never be blindsided. Excellent point and advice!

I designed my kitchen in 1996, right when the drawers were becoming more and more available. I decided on 2 big wide sets , and the small one for “ littles”. I have never been disappointed !!! Doing exactly what you said in the “5” by writing on the paper design what would go in each . My entire pony and pan set goes in one deep drawer! Rubbermaid- left over containers in another. Wax paper-bags,,,, so on and so forth ,,, think it out for yourself.

When we redid our kitchen 1.5 years ago, your videos were invaluable. Some of the top tips, close out the corner base cabinet-wasted space, the best sink (loved taking my old corner sink to the metal recycler), drawers, drawers, drawers!!!.

We did an oversized peninsula with banks of drawers. We also took a painful blind corner AND put in a single platform lazy susan for recycle bins, which was awesome, and probably the only reason I'd have a corner cab.

If your layout is changing try your best to “try it out” before deciding. You might not be able to physically do this if the layout change is dramatic, but make copies of the layout and then work through some of the things you cook most often. Use a bright colored pencil or marker to show your steps. If you’re only tweaking one or two things in your layout, see if you can physically try them out. Plug the fridge into a heavy duty extension cord and move it to the new location; get a portable cooktop (you’ll probably need one anyway during the remodel for your temp kitchen) and place it on a counter in the proposed new stove location; use a dishpan at the proposed new sink location. It won’t be exactly the same as the new layout, but it will give you a better feel for whether you will love or hate the change in function and whether or not further tweaks are needed.

My list: 1) Make it accessible. Comply with the relevant code/s for wheelchair and vision accessibility, consult extensively with the tallest person you know, and also consult with parents who are used to having their small children in the kitchen learning to help. 2) Have a range hood over the appliance cabinet as well as over the stove. Choose quiet range hoods that won't drive you mad with their noise. 3) Pull-out pantries give you that deep storage you just lost by having knee space instead of storage under your work benches. 4) Have a designated handwash station. The kitchen sink is not designed for washing hands. 5) Think about how food enters the kitchen, from the car boot or delivery service or from your garden or other food production spaces, and how you process, store, and prepare it, and if you're not eating in the kitchen, how it goes to where you do eat. Do you want a vegetable washing station outside the kitchen door? Think beyond the fridge-stove-sink triangle to the pantry, the oven and small appliances, and the rubbish bin and dishwasher - as well as your workspaces. Imagine some of your favourite dishes, and how you'd move around the space preparing them.

8:05 Pretty much the situation I've been looking at for some time. I need some structural repairs that will involve rebuilding the exterior wall of my galley. The layout appears basically sound and I generally like it, but there are a few tweaks that will improve its function, especially a wall oven and cooktop, and getting rid of those kneel-and-stretch base cabinets in favor of drawers, pull-downs in the wall cabinets, and since I'm doing structural repairs I'll widen out the doors to the brealfast room and the dining room.

yes to the drawers, all drawers nothing but drawers - even under the sink. Lots of deep drawers especially. OTOH my new island is 2 cabinets deep plus 15 inch overhang and so I put doors under the overhang for rarely-accessed storage - drawers would not work under a big overhang. As for time budget - I am at 5 months into this kitchen, pantry laundry room remodel and just waiting for the granite to be installed as the icing on the cake. I did half the kitchen first, with 2'x4' tiles on the counter (In February) to have a usable kitchen the whole time while demoing, wall removal and then a big island.

On drawers vs pullouts with doors. Kitchen remodels happen $lowly and as family's have resources and not at the speed kitchen usage changes do. After a lot of years of living in one (un-remodeled) kitchen I also noticed that items also do not stay the same size/shape. My giant mixer went the way of the dinosaur, my hand blender multiplied and shrunk. Many plastics are now gone for good and I won't be replacing them. Several new kitchen gadgets found a home with me. Now with a new kitchen coming up I'm taking flexibility into account. Drawers are pretty static sized while doors and pullouts are much more easily adjusted for height and sturdiness so I'll include at least one or two into the design, just in case.

Loving your videos and taking notes with an upcoming u shape remodel! Your expertise is valuable. If you’re walking into a medium kitchen with a long wall of windows, parallel to a large empty island, would you rather put the farmhouse sink in the middle of that wall under a big window or a 36” range with hood, windows nearby? Which one is the “showpiece” behind the island? (Not putting either in the island.) Would you ever put sink and range on same wall with enough landing space in between? And neither of them centered with island? Maybe I need a consult! Ha!

Haha. Thanks so much for watching my content. I’m always down for a consult lol. Firstly, a long wall of windows is amazing as well as an uninterrupted island. Get your designer to show you both options. Sink and range on the same wall and separated. My go to is to separate them but I don’t k ow the sizes or the aspects of the layout. So…yeah maybe a consult. Haha

My sink and range are on the same wall now (rental) and will be in the kitchen I'm planning (availability of hook-ups). I have about 20 inches between them now (with another 18-20 inches between sink and refrigerator), planning 36 inches on one side and 18 on the other in new kitchen. I've made my current work, but am looking forward to having space on both sides of range and sink.
