I have now had four, yes FOUR, endoscopies/gastroscopies however you want to call it. I did a video previously • Endoscopy (Gastroscopy... taking about my two experiences with an Endoscopy one with sedation and one without and I keep seeing a lot of questions in the comments, so I thought I'd do a quick video talking through my top tips to get through it!!

Hi all! I had my endoscopy on Saturday. Just thought I would come on here and share my experience. Not to make you all feel anxious at all. I had my endoscopy without sedation because my veins are small and they couldn't inject the sedation into me. Overall, the procedure took 4 minutes exactly. I was gagging quite a lot but it's over before you know it. Im so glad I didn't take sedation.

Just to share my experience as well with this examination. I’ve had a couple, all requested by myself (as a true health anxiety person would do, unfortunately). It showed a small hh. I never had the sedation, I guess in NL this is not common, it was every time the lovely bananaspray (lidocaine). The most important advise I can give is: Stay calm, breath normal and steadily. The more calm and easy you are, the less uncomfortable the experience will be. Sure, the swallowing part is not comfortable, but it’s painless, and once it’s ‘down the hatch’, all you have to do is lie there and be still, it’s done pretty quickly. The people doing the exam are professionals who do this multiple times a day, day in day out. Lastly, know that many people of all ages have this exam, it’s quite common.

I couldn’t agree more. I had it without sedation and it was horrid. I was told so many people have it without sedation so I thought I can do this. I am assuming those people haven’t had one before. 😀

I'm a fellow young Hiatal Hernia sufferer, 22! Thanks for making this video it will help lots of people. Without a family friend advising me to have sedation I suspect my gastroscopy experience would have been far worse!

Hey! First of all, thanks so much John, for your videos on endoscopies and your experience with them! Of all the hundreds of vids like this, yours calmed me down the most! The first time I tried, without sedation, because I wanted to be in control of my body, They gave me half of the full dose of throat spray and I freaked out and left in tears and a panic attack. Anyone getting an endoscopy, PLEASE GET SEDATION! Today I went for the procedure WITH sedation - completely different experience - You don’t really remember much at all, and what you do remember is just things like heaving, and having it pulled out! Couldn’t believe how comfortable I was, and like John says, the sedation is quite nice 😅 I have an anxiety disorder and I’m telling, if you get sedation, it actually feels MORE than fine!

i’ll be having one tomorrow to hopefully diagnose stomach pain problems i’ve had for over a year and i’ve been absolutely petrified the weeks leading up for it- will definitely beg the doctors for sedation as i have several anxiety disorders. thank you for this video, it helps a lot with all the worry.

I had an upper endoscopy today and have to say this video did help me a lot. I was really anxious and it was indeed uncomfortable but soo glad I took the sedative option. It really helps to take the edge off in terms of anxiety when it comes to the procedure. The mouth spray is a MUST, as it helps to hide some of the discomfort of the scope. overall, both options for comfort only cover up the discomfort a bit. This procedure isn’t a breeze (at least not in the uk) as you are still awake even on the sedative and you still have to swallow the scope at the beginning. However, once that initial bit is done, it is mostly alright and is over before you know it. I’ve been diagnosed with moderately severe gastritis so hopefully can get the treatment I need for my pain.

Also as an emetaphobe, this procedure terrifies me.

While I recognize that in some countries you have to fight harder to be properly sedated for the procedure, the trick is to speak up for yourself ahead of time and insistently voice your concerns (to the point of refusing consent if warranted) especially if you have issues with a strong gag reflex.

Thank you so much for putting me at ease and sharing your experience. As you say, there aren’t many patient lead views, so it is great to find yours.

Thanks for posting this, my relative has declined sedation, after listening to your experiences I'm going to encourage them to have it, knowing they won't handle it well otherwise x

Just had my first one this week. I wanted sedation, but because I live alone and no one could look after me they wouldn't give me sedation, so I had to it without. I won't pretend it was anything less than horrible, with completely uncontrollable retching despite the staff doing their best to comfort me and me doing controlled breathing, but it was over pretty quickly, and was totally painless.

Dear John, thank you so much for helping me out to decide if to go with or without sedation. I’m definitely going through with sedation and I don’t care to stay a few hours later in the hospital. I don’t want to remember this “lovely” experience 😅 I’ve had open heart surgery twice, but I wasn’t nervous like I’m now. I guess it’s because of putting a tube up and down… It must be uncomfortable for anyone. I’m going in in 7 days.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I am having one (my first) in a couple of weeks so gathering info and pros and cons of whether to be sedated. Over all I think I will choose not to have one but it’s really helpful to hear other people’s experiences

I have had several of these. 1st one I had was sedation. I remembered thinking someone was trying to murder me by choking, that was my only memory. The 5 or 6 others I just have throat spray. Its very uncomfortable but breath through the nose. The gagging is horrid but u cant be sick. Got another this Thursday and am terrified but will go for throat spray and get on with it. I have v strong gag reflex. When endoscope is in you CAN breath. The swallowing is the worst bit as you said it’s not small at all.good luck to all out there. However you get this test and you are left with no options for treatment

First thing I said in the clinic, is knock me out! Absolutely.. I remembered nothing, and that allows me to continue my future appointments and be less anxious about my healthcare. Be kind to yourself. Thanks for the video.😊
