This video covers my typical trail foods/meals, my favorites, and a Q&A regarding resupplying. I had to break this up into two videos to cover dehydration and packing a resupply box, so stay tuned for that! Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe :)

Made me feel a lot better about my thru-hike food planning. I'm freaking out about how to fit 5000 calories a day in my pack and it's feeling impossible!!! I think I just gotta accept that I'll never have 'enough' food, and I need to overeat in towns. I dehydrated a lot of my own food (vegan!) and it's loaded with chia seeds, nutritional yeast, dried veggies/greens, beans, etc. It did take forever, but I just stretched it over a few months, it was pretty low effort. From what I've noticed, PB powder comes in handy when it's used in something else. Obviously, you can just use regular PB, but sometimes it's just nice to make your oatmeal and not have to drag out another food to mix in and let melt. *shrug* That's just me. I mixed it in with a lot of my dehydrated meals. Thanks for relieving me of my stresses!! (Also, are you vegetarian?? Marshmallows are made with gelatin... :\ )

If you can take advice from an old worn out hiker with lots of worn parts, work towards ultralight. In time it will effect your joints and spinal cushioning. When young I was invincible but after thirty I began to have lots of pain. Go safe, go warm, but go much lighter. You have to experiment with new packs too. There are many very comfortable sub 2 lb packs these days.

I've never heard of a good quarter of these things, but I'm Canadian and we just don't have some of this stuff. That PB2 powder definitely looks messy and rather odd (plus I hate peanut butter unless it is contained in Reese or similar treat format.) Flavoured peanut butter sounds exciting though! I'm a vegetarian too and man, I'm not big on nuts. I'm not entirely sure what I am going to do snack-wise for my thru hike, but there's a good chance that trail mix will be but a rare contribution to my food supply.

Super helpful with the recording of all the food choices. Nice and thorough/So many options. Not a fan of the PB2 myself. Too much work as you mentioned, especially on a trail. I noticed a lot of the stuff you pick like protein powders, the quest bars, the PB2 etc are all pretty popular in the fitness scene. You about that life or just trying not to die from malnutrition on the trail? (exaggerating of course haha) Excited for the dehydrating video. Been looking into it. I saw a few dehydrators pop up for sale, still looking around. Decisions decisions...

This does not have to do with Trail Food however I did not find too much info on google about health insurance and thru-hikers? If you or anyone has info on what they did/did not do that would be helpful, I am transitioning out of active duty military and getting into thru-hiking (JMT this summer), insurance is something I never needed to worry about being in the military but now I am almost out I am starting to think about it. Great videos and any advice is appreciated, thanks ;-)

There are a couple of reasons why many hikers ran out of feed between resupplies in spite of the fact they were experienced backpackers during the later stages of the PCT. (1) They could be looking for a little sympathy and attention. After all, if they finished one section of the trail and they went without food at the end, that means they must be one tough backpacker, right? This could be a mark of honor just like a student who studies for finals by locking themselves in a bedroom for one week. It could be admirable just for their effort (2) Perhaps they were trying to lose weight and by consistently underestimating the amount of food they would eat, they most definitely caused a weight loss at the end before each resupply. (3) Perhaps they were overambititious and overoptimistic in estimating how many miles they would hike each day and thus consistently ran out of food because it took them longer to finish a section of the trail than they thought. (4) Perhaps they wanted to gorge themselves at restaurants and food stores and by running out of food prior to arriving in town, they would give themselves a nice calorie deficiet and thus, it would be okay to eat 6 Big Macs or 14 pancakes at one meal. (5) It could be a way to try to save money. If they were carrying too much food, they have to give it away, throw it away, put it into the hiker box. If they are carrying too little food, they are sure to eat everything and not spend any money on unneeded food. Of course, you could argue that if you carry extra food into a resupply point that you just buy less new food at this location which is a valid point. (6) Maybe it was just laziness.....=)
