Thanks Erin for sharing your initial impression of this prototype. All the praise, coming from you, has sparked my interest in knowing more about this future offering. I will wait for their public announcement of the MSRP, but we'll aware that if I have to ask, I most assuredly can't afford them... Great clip, thanks again!

I heard my first Unity Horns back in the early 2000s and it was a revelation. I was a horn hater until hearing these and I can't say I've heard anything better. I built my own 14 years ago and haven't looked back.

Thanks for sharing your road trip experience. That type of horn always has intrigued me and I am sure done right, like these guys do it, you get coherent sound top to bottom for the wide range they cover. You would probably need to plan on using DSP/ Dirac to make these work in a normal room without overwhelming the lower ranges. But with the $$$ you need to invest in these, that is probably a given.

Thanks for a great report. I suspect that the large room contributed significantly to the lack of listening fatigue. When would really have to try high output speakers in the same word very least similar spaces before a tributing the lack of fatigue to the speaker. Another factor that may diminish listener fatigue is speaker related: intermodulation distortion. The horn in the 215-in woofers will certainly reduce this although a two-way will push things in the other direction. Thanks again!

Hey Erin, I really enjoyed this vid. Awesome that you were able to visit DSL and hear the Hyperions, as well a bring one of Tom's Synergy Horns home to put on the NSF!!! :) I'm very interested to hear about your findings in regards to the required test procedures for it, and ultimately how "it measures". Do you know yet how low in frequency (F3) this Synergy Horn reaches on its own without the 15" woofers? Cool stuff, and dammit, now I'm craving a PB&J, LOL!

Full range group delay measurement or full range phase (same thing) would be what could show it. Also, harmonic distortion measurement. The Danley synergy horns have acoustic crossovers that help eliminate distortion. I've learned over time with Danley also is that their speakers typically output way more than necessary so at 95dB they are using about one watt. The magic is how the Danleys sound accurate at all volumes and all frequencies and most speakers aren't dynamic at all frequencies. I'm very familiar with all Danley models and I use them mixing live audio a few times per week. In home or live audio they are incredible. I've yet to hear speakers that sound better than theirs and I've heard hundreds of live and audiophile/home speakers. I agree with you I've heard speakers costing $200k plus and they do not compare to a $10k pair of Danley speakers lol.

incredible video !! i know that meyer sound had pretty extensive research on the phase linearity / soundsstage quality correlation for their bluehorn system, however i dunno how much is public. that should help in understanding why coax tend to be "better" at spatialisation (maybe linked to on/ off axis linearity )

One of the benefits of large pro speakers, is that they transfer the energy into the air more efficiently than home speakers. The coupling of sound to the air produces more realism, dynamacism (your term,) or jump factor.

Man now I want to hear these speakers even more. End game speakers. Regarding the lack of ear fatigue, my JTR 212RTs do the same thing(though probably not to that level). My Genelec 8351b can play really loud and clean, but I still find that the JTRs can play 8-10dB louder with about the same level of ear fatigue. I'm guessing these are even a level above that.
@TimpBizkit
@TimpBizkit 2 жыл бұрын
I think ear fatigue is about being "loud in one spot" e.g. there is a resonance or a frequency that sticks out like a sore thumb, and if it happens to be in the range of 500 to 7000 Hz where the ear is most sensitive. Also harmonic distortion can cause a lot more content in this range when you turn it up. Bass frequencies won't generally give you ear fatigue, unless they are at a level which makes you feel like your ears have "popped", which is usually higher than you reach in a home audio setting.
@abdo-dr1tu
@abdo-dr1tu 3 жыл бұрын
Probably the lack of distortion and resonances made it so the volume isn’t as draining that loud.

Wow this anecdote really has me wanting to build a pair of high sensitivity towers with the b&c coaxial horn drivers. Luckily they are way to expensive for me to justify right now lol. I’ve been wanting to pair them with either a pair of eminence lab 12s or 15s for some full range speakers. Either that or get some higher sensitivity woofers to pair with them and just have dedicated subs. Anyway, great video! Nothing but quality from you and I can’t wait for what you have next.

If you're doing vented maybe one of the Eminence kilomax 18 drivers as they are good for boxes tuned in the upper 20s and probably play higher than a lab and use less amp power

When you say you can pick out lower frequencies but not high frequencies . . . What your experience is demonstrating is the psychoacoustic "critical band." We hear less accurately as we progress to higher frequencies. These bands of audio are much more forgiving when it comes to speaker response.

My DIY speakers are not coaxial but are DSP distance-corrected for my listening position, and their imaging is spookily palpable. I also resonate with Erin's comment about the challenge of verbally characterizing the sound of a speaker that seems to just get out of the way of the music. It has to be heard to be understood. You know you are on the right track when your focus shifts from judging the speaker to judging the recording and you find yourself seeking out the exceptional recordings that have successfully captured the spatial and timbral magic of a musical event.

I also have the same 4 channel DSP with Smaart software, this sounds like a super expensive system that you will not find in almost any speaker store and the FS is 27 Hz, lower makes no sense anymore as that 27 Hz is already like a heavy thunderstorm sounds above your head.
