The taxi driver wasn’t going home, your trip was only short & not worth it to him, so he wanted to go elsewhere & hopefully pick up someone else who needed to go across the other side of the city & make more money or pick up a tourist, who again he could get more out of by way of a tip etc, English people rarely tip unless we have to.
