Thanks for this great video, perfect timing for me! My backyard is covered almost entirely in lush sphagnum moss. (Canada) Do you have any tips for using this moss to make moss poles? I wonder if I would need to dehydrate it completely first, or if I could use the "fresh" moss.

Almost exactly a year ago, I watched your moss pole making tutorial for the first time. I had a regular old trailing golden pothos I wanted to wrangle. This year, I have pothos leaves way bigger than my hand. Not to mention a growing collection of different plants on moss pole. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping me learn how to create a lush jungle in my home.

I am a Flight Attendant ✈️ and right before this trip started I thought and reminded myself to save all the plastic water bottles that I drank and I carried them around for this 4 day trip and I will be putting holes through the caps of the water bottle and putting them on the top of my moss/fern tree mix in my poles to water my poles. 👍

This man got me hooked on the moss pole 🤣 I'm a brand spankin new plant parent too. My poles dry out hella quick here in the NE of US but it's heckin hot this summer and I use about 400w+ of grow lights. I sleep during the day and work overnight, the lights automatically come on at 11pm. Do yourself a favor, DON'T use the plastic "hardware cloth/mesh". Unless you don't mind zip-tying an additional dowel or stake to the back, as shown. The skinnier the pole, the floppier that rubbish plastic gets. I've found adding a piece of plastic sheeting on the back of my moss pole before adding the moss helps with the drying out too. I shoulda done that on day one. I made my own "grow vertical" poles too, using basic products bought from amazon. Worked like a charm! Glad to see Brad hamming it up as usual😂

I've been keeping plants for 10 plus years and that is the secret to indoor gardening, block out all available sunlight and use grow lights. I was awake for 4 days this weekend with the Colombian marching powder so I slept like a baby even with my lights. I only have 1 small philodendron and 3 small Hoyas though because climbing plants can quickly make a mess of the place. As for night growing it will probably make "day" temps cooler and "nights" hotter, will that cause problems? Only way to find out is try. I'm about to try to grow rare plants from the Himalayan Mountain, I'd rather play it safe and not say these will be the only ones in the world growing outside mountain regions but I'll say in my state no one else will have it. Time to start marching!

Quick Tip: I've noticed that using thin, flimsy plastic bottles doesn't really work for my moss poles; however, using bottles with thicker plastic, like the Fiji bottles Jan uses, works like a dream for his moss pole watering technique. 💗💓

I currently have two plants on moss poles, one in aroid mix and the other in Bonsai Jack Cacti and Succulent Mix. Both are given GT Foliage water weakly, weekly and are currently thriving, so far! I’m so excited to bring the knowledge and experience of your own plant journey into my home and tweek it for my own enjoyment in my collection! Thanks for the guidance! Following your tips, I now have 30 mosspoles with some plants nearly touching the ceiling. Time to chop and extend soon :) A tip for those struggling with your watering method: opt for square-shaped bottles! It might sound odd, but it truly makes a difference. I experimented with typical round bottles, like 1L Coca-Cola ones. With them, water either stops dripping entirely at some point or flows too rapidly. It's challenging to find the right balance between too few and too many holes (or different sizes of holes). Square bottles, on the other hand, seem more flexible (flat sides allow more wiggle room when sucking some air in) and better regulate water flow, making it easier to control the amount of water released over time. I don't have 1L Fuji water where I live, but there are other options - I use HDPE 1L bottles with DIN45 caps; it's also very easy to fill due to the wide bottleneck diameter.

Hello! Nice to see your technique. :) I've been having great success mixing spag moss with fern fiber, 2/3 - 1/3 respectively. Mixing them together with water in a bowl, the mess is minimal. It's a good way to make more poles with less spag - and the roots are all in! Plus I love the smell of fern fibre. :)

Great series of programs. Started making moss poles when I saw one of your clips and the plants on them are doing well. Using mixed medium half moss and half coconut chips. The plants are outside so they have a very chunky aroid mix. A local grower of ferns told me you need to weather coconut chips or they rob nutrients from the meduum, grey/brown ia the color to aim for.

Good concise guide. I've been using your moss pole method for a few months now and its interesting how quickly you can settle into a regular routine with it. I stand 3 plants at a time in the bath, shower the leaves and lightly moisten the moss, then use the upturned bottle. I have a layer of leca in the bottom of the outer pot so the plants aren't standing in excess water when I put them back. Keep up the good work!! 💚🌱

I did it..I potted up a couple rooted cuttings onto my first moss pole! I have been fighting it, but I want to see them be happier and grow to a more mature state. I have been subscribed for awhile and have watched you learn and grow as well. I am certain you get a million repeat questions, so this video was fantastic as a big overview and folks can go back and watch other videos to get the extra details. It has been a learning experience for me without having to commit to the moss pole life. Now I am in to try this. Most of my plants are healthy but they just kind of max out on size when in a pot...or the pot size just keeps growing over the years and it is space limiting. Pretty excited and I want to thank your for all your efforts and sharing with us. Plus, the cat is not hurting!!

Hi Jan! I just made my first moss pole about a month ago. I started with a syngonium. My plant attached itself to the pole in less than 2 weeks and is doing well! All the things we have to take into account when growing plants, humidity, light, temperature, air flow, fertilizer, etc, etc - all of these factors are limiting factors. So that if any one factor is insufficient , it can cause limitations in plant growth and health. So the idea is to try to maximize each one of these factors for the best results. The success of growing on a moss pole , or any other growing technique, for that matter, still depends on each and all other limiting factors. I expect that this is the reason why certain things work in some places for some people and not for others.

I’ve made my own diy budget grow vertical moss poles from pvc cutting board material from the dollar store, roll of plastic rain gutter guard, zip ties, hole puncher and a tomato stake. I’ve also made a smaller version using large smooth plastic water bottles split in half for the backing using all the other same materials.

I have started with the plastic backed poles because we live in a semi-arid environment. And they seem easier to water. And I’ve just started with 3, and one so far on a cedar plank, and others (smaller trailers/climbers) on trellises… thanks for EVERYTHING Jan! Your videos have inspired so much in me and they way you do them is soooo informative and easy to stay to watch!!! Why wet the moss before making the pole only to dry it in the sun after? So the moss forms to the pole? Brilliant video thanks Jan and Brad!

I stick a ceramic hydro spike with attached water container, the ones that come in different sizes, to the top of the pole, and it is easy to use and helps to keep the moss moist for longer. It does not water the pole completely, but using it i only need to water the pole once or twice a month.

I also use a big schefflera as a pole. I stuck some Monstera peru in the pot and wrapped it around the trunk.

Thanks Jan. Now I know that the bottom of my Verrucosum isn't going to remain a stick when I cut it. I'm hoping I can get the two cuttings on the one moss pole to lush it up a bit. Thanks again. And my Rowie says "Hi Brad." We love our ginger lads. ❤😻

Loved the video and learned helpful information from it! I'm newly starting my actual moss pole journey (I've used trellises, bamboo poles, coco poles, etc. but not sphagnum moss poles). My two plant babies that I'm starting with is a p. verrucosum and p. melano. I'm second guessing the direction that I placed the melano. I'm not confident that I placed the "back" side against the moss. I've heard that it matters but does it really and if so, how do you tell the front side from the back side?

I have recently started watching your videos and they are very informative and inspiring. If I may offer one bit of advice it would help us folks that live in the USA and don't use the metric system if you would say or show what the conversion is to inches or feet. A good example is the size of the grid on the hardware cloth for the moss pole. Because you didn't say specifically it is 1/2 inch I bought the wrong size. I know, not your fault for my ignorance but if you had said 10mm or 1/2 inch I wouldn't be trying to get rid of 75 feet of 1/4 inch hardware cloth. It seems an easy and very helpful addition to your videos. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this video. I want to put my new Philodendron silver sword on a moss pole. It's potted up in a peaty mix from the grower. Should I remove all this soil and plant up with an aroid mix or will it be OK as it is please?

This was a wonderful video 😊 full of very helpful advice for the beginner plant parent like me 😁 I do have one question and I hope you can answer....how sustainable and environmentally friendly is sphagnum moss?? I've read online several articles and no ones seem to make up their minds when it comes to moss, coco coir or chips, and other mediums. Im wondering vecuase i don't want to cause more harm thar good, you know? I love plants but they wouldn't exist if we didn't have a planet 😊 thank you so much.😊

I'm so glad I found your channel when I did. I have a couple of young philodendron and monstera cuttings and I've been thinking of giving them a moss pole eventually. I do have a question about the substrate though. I do have an aroid mix ready so I will most likey use that, but my question is do you think this would work in a semi-hydro set up using leca or pon in the pot?
