Fantastic breakdown of all these options which you've ridden. Also the fact that you've put in the miles on the high-end wheel sets as well as the very bottom of the price spectrum and everything in-between. This just shows how good the Asian carbon wheel tech has come where you can spend less than half of some of the Big name brands and easily get better value and performance. Warranty and the ability to deal with a more local dealer network does matter to some extent but all these companies are needing to up their game because of Winspace, Farsports and Elite Drive. Hopefully you can get the Ascent Polaris 69's and some of the Light Bicycle wheels sent to you in the future as those are also good options. Be safe this winter you Legend and keep up the great content.

I'd be lying if I said a co-sign from the likes of yourself and Galen Kehler wasn't important to me. That means the video did its job. Thank you sir! Just waiting on Galen to chime in LoL. I have a buddy locally here who solely rides those ENVE 5.6 SES wheels. 2 years straight. He recently needed to have them serviced, and the turn around time was less than two weeks door to door. This dude rides about 18,000 miles a year mind you. So from that perspective...the ENVEs are a worthy value to him. Personally speaking though the Winspace, Elite, and FarSports are tough to beat performance wise. I'm really considering reaching out to Ascent, but sadly it's practically winter here now.

Great video as always, Patrick. For those of us who are deep into Chinese parts, we all accept that there is a price performance trade-off. I like to invoke the 80/20 rule: you'll get 80% there for 20% of the price (mileage varies widely). However, in the carbon wheel space, we truly are spoiled for choice with options that are not only more affordable, but are on par and often better than their mainstream equivalents.
@PatrickLino
@PatrickLino Жыл бұрын
This is an excellent perspective. Thanks 1 Sigma! Considering some of these wheels cost less than half of the popular American brands with top-notch warranty, you could buy two sets of a wheel and not worry about warranty or servicing all together LoL.

My choice came down to the Elite Drive 65 and the Lun Hyper D67. I emailed elite and they were fantastic. I asked for the wheels without decals and they said they could do that. I also wanted them in a matte finish but they couldn’t do that. The D67 with a discount code and the matte finish became the ones. I’m using the new Specialized s-works 2bliss turbo t2/t5 tyres in 28mm and they transition to the rim perfectly. I ran 69f/74r psi for a wet ride and to be honest they felt almost squishy. I think 78r/73f would be perfect for my 90kg.

Thanks for this review. Based on your chart I would pick yoeleo 35mm for everyday riding/climbing wheels and the Elite 45 drive for fast rides and all rounder. The price and weight on the elite 45 drive is such a great deal. One thing I am very scared of is that lighter wheels could be a sacrifice to durability. We as riders always think of light weight = less durable. Carbon can only go so "thin" before it borders fragile. I would like to add into the equation of the riders weight and the terrain they ride on can affect the long term durability of the wheels. If you can get your hands on some zipp firecrest I would love to hear your opinion on them as they are the benchmark of wheels here where I live.
@PatrickLino
@PatrickLino Жыл бұрын
Overall system weight is more important than individual component weight. A wheelset 200g heavier than its competition is only like 0.2% of the system weight. I am certain no one will be able to feel such a insignificant difference in weight besides, perhaps world-tour level riders climbing the steepest of mountains.
@bonbonflippers4298
@bonbonflippers4298 Жыл бұрын
@@PatrickLino agree on system weight. 200g difference in weight on wheels have zero effect outside of racing. Most of the weight come from the hub which is at the center of a spinning wheel. Weight has been blown out of proportion by consumers not understanding of total system weight. Weight plays no part in performance outside of racing. So much marketing on weight and aero gains in design that people have forgotten the basics of cycling...the legs and fitness of the cardiovascular system...

The thing I don't like about your rating system is factoring in price. Everyone wants a good wheel system. especially me and lucky me I don't care about price. But I don't believe that just because a set of wheels cost over $2500 or has a better warranty it is better than something costing half that or even less. So, I would like to see a review that leaves price and warranty out of the picture. I know you didn't test a lot of other brands but these brands must be included for this topic to have any meaning to anyone. At least you did use the disclaimer this review was just done on the wheels you tested. Hopefully you get some wheels from brands that some consider high end and make another video in the future.
@PatrickLino

Just so the audience is clear: You assume a very low-level KZfaqr like myself has unlimited access to all the current wheels on the market. Clearly I do not and yet, who else is doing comprehensive wheel guides even remotely close to this video besides the large paid-for-review channels like GCN, Cycling Weekly, or Road CC? Price and warranty is ABSOLUTELY important because this video isn't a "performance-only" guide. That seems foolish and short-sighted. Those are very tangible aspects that people (on my channel) deem valuable. ENVE 5.6 SES ($2500) is very popular wheelset and yet even if I remove warranty and price from the equation...they still don't stack up to the latest Winspace Hyper D67s ($1300). Quite frankly the only other reason I even included warranty and price is because if I didn't, it would probably be MORE apparent how the big brands don't stack up to Chinese brands. So what "high end" brands are left to review? DT Swiss? Zipp? Roval? Meilenstein? If you have any of these please send them my way to review. Thank you!

@@PatrickLino You highlighted my point exactly, if you remove price the ENVE wheels don't stack up. This is information we need to know. Campagnolo is a popular brand. I'd be curious how DT Swiss hubs stack up since they get Kudos from so many people. One thing I have learned throughout my many years of cycling is that the stuff everyone tells you is good is really not. People used to recommend Mavic but after owning 3 sets of them I found out they were junk. Junk hubs and junk carbon on the rims. Shimano Dura-Ace is junk. I bought the C30 and had to return it because the rear hub was machined off center then the replacement the bladed spokes kept twisting, I only used them one month then sold them on eBay. I have been building my own wheels using BOYD Rims and I have used Industry 9 Hubs, White Industries Hubs and now ONYX Hubs. The Industry Nine Hubs which everyone raves about aren't really worth the asking price and the White Industries Hubs has a shyte preload adjusting system. A good Hub I think was made by Hope. But for carbon rims I have found that BOYD has been the best especially in the crosswinds for keeping control of your bike. I like that they are asymmetric too. I have a new set of Campagnolo Shamal carbons I used for two weeks then put them back in their bags, they are shyte for crosswinds. I will put them on eBay soon. I like that you put videos out there, some are pretty good and it's got to be hard to put a video out like this one because you are going to get a lot of negativity. Sorry if you think my comments have anything to do with you, they don't. I think it's great you are into cycling and want to make videos about it. I don't think you have a lot of experience yet so be careful about what you recommend and happy cycling to you.
