This is the best gear video I have seen. Never thought of cutting up a Sawyer bag as a water scoop. I will do that very thing since I rolled them up and put them in a drawer. That's a nice set up you have and the only thing I found that does not weigh anything is what I leave at home. My pack weigh is 7.41 pounds excluding the consumables. The ultralight pack is a Zpacks Nero and a Jungle Hammock as the shelter. My hiking and camping area is the state of Florida. It's a semi tropical area so you don't want to use a lot of the heavy ( bulky ) cold weather gear. Which brings me to this ... Is the item Wanted or Needed , Wanted stays home and Needed goes.

Thanks, Chuck! I need to cut some more weight. I'm always thinking about it. I'm just not sure where it will come from. I doubt I will ever be in the sub 8lb range but who knows. Appriciate you watching!

Thanks for sharing. Well thought out UL-system indeed. A bit too many items for my personal taste, but if You're OK with all this stuff (despite being light), sure. How about a simple pot cozy to save some fuel and get rid of the stuff sack for the cookware? How about a 1oz lighter knife (still OK for camp chores and whittling)? Who actually needs the trowel? How about getting rid of the cardboard tube inside the toilet-paper roll? Just some suggestions from my own progression into UL trekking since a few years. Of course: HYOH! ATB, Gereon

Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm constantly changing my gear and always looking for ideas. I've found the more stuff I leave behind the more i enjoy the trip not only does it make me lighter it give me less to think about. As far as knives go if I remade the video today It would have the Buck Apex in it. I tried the Sog Ct-i and it was too flimsy for me.

Nice loadout! I try to be light but not so much ultralight since I don't really do any extreme hiking whereas I'd need to be more ultralight. However, I like to see what others are doing for ideas of my own. :) I have enjoyed your video and was sent here by Hikergy 16.

My base weight is around 3 lbs less than yours but we carry a number of the same items. With over 18,000 trail miles along the AT over 25 years ya learn a few things...yeah. This March will starts my 3rd thruhike of the AT--------I cant help it, I LOVE this Trail and its people!!!!--------and you're doing a decent job of paring your weight. I would do a few things differently but everybody has their own particulars...... For instance, I cook only once a day and only enuff to get the water hot enough to saturate the pasta so I carry a "1.3 liter "grease pot w/lid" that weighs about 3 ozs yet gives me a huge volume of food in that one single pot.....a lighter.....an esbit titanium stove at just a few grams and esbit tablets at 14 grams each for the number of days between resupply which is usually no more than 4 days max if I can help it. Your cook weight is good until you have to add in liquid alcohol weight. Thats the reason I prefer esbit, altho they can get a little pricey!! This is a nice video and, methinks, will helkp a lot of thos less knowledgable who are trying to go ultralight, or just lighter than they are now. Nice job.

Hi It appears you switched from a hammock (last year) to a tent now? Any particular reason?
@WolfPacks
@WolfPacks 6 жыл бұрын
I switched after my Grayson Highlands trip. I got tired of finding good trees without widowmakers to hang from. I was also trying to go lighter. I've since realized how much easier it is to setup the Zpacks tents vs messing around with hanging a hammock just right.

So what’s the total cost of gear?
@WolfPacks
@WolfPacks 6 жыл бұрын
Karel I have no idea, LOL. I gathered all of this stuff over a long period of time. I'm constantly upgrading items and if I remade the video today it would have some different stuff in it. I would consider this to be a high end set up that if purchased all at once it could easily run in excess of 2k. I'm assuming you're not asking about camera gear, that's another story on its own.
@karelblankenfeldt5420
@karelblankenfeldt5420 6 жыл бұрын
Wolf Packs ... yeah the camera part was when I began my comment/question. It was a good set up, cool to see. One of the better content vids for sure. And yes really high end, but I acquire slowly too. Makes it feel less daunting. I’d love a Duplex, but converting that to $CAN makes it $1000. Not ready to pay that yet...lol Have a good one!

Thanks Karel, appreciate you watching! I feel like buying backpacking gear is like paying for a never ending vacation that I can take whenever I would like so I don't feel bad putting money into it.

If you are carrying it and it's not a consumable then it's base-weight. I'm amazed people don't count camera gear, trekking poles and all the stuff they load up their pockets with as base weight.
@WolfPacks
@WolfPacks 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I listed all the weights and separated camera gear from backpacking gear only because most people aren't making KZfaq videos and don't carry over 4lbs of camera gear. My ultimate goal was to lighten my backpacking gear in order to carry more camera gear. Some may categorize me as a lightweight backpacker even though my non camera gear load out is made up primarily of items commonly on a UL backpackers list. I'm fine with that, this is why I formatted the video the way I did. The video shows a UL backpacking gear load out, and it also shows my preferred camera gear load out. From another perspective, when they come up with camera gear that offers multi purpose and it becomes a luxury item then I will fully agree with you but until than the extra 4 pounds in my pack is more of a burden which adds no function to the trip other than the ability to record it and share it with others.
