Glacier is one of our favorites! It's so incredibly beautiful! It definitely gets your heart pumping when running into bears, especially a mama bear and her two cubs. We're so glad they were not aggressive. Praise God all was OK. Great footage, Randy! 🐻🐾

You did most things right so glad there was no encounter! On my trip to Glacier I did not buy bear spray & was thankful I didn't see any on my hike. Also, I was hiking with a friend who was much larger & slower than me.😂

WOW!!! I have come across black bears in the wild but never a grizzly....must have been a terrifying experience. Thanks for sharing your encounter. On a side note I just discovered your channel and have been binge watching your adventures. My wife and I also love the National Parks/Monuments of this Great country!!! Would love to meet you sometime. We will be exploring Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming and Texas this summer. We encountered Black Bears in Grand Teton and Mount Rainier, which are supposed to be less aggressive than Grizzlies, but at the moment, that's not running through your head, LOL. I spent over 35 years hiking and climbing Glacier Park. Probably close to 6000 trail miles and well over 100 peak summits. Dozens upon dozens of nights camping and fishing and over 100 days biking the closed road during spring plowing.. I love Glacier Park. Your experience mimics my experiences exactly. Never did I have to deploy spray. Never. And I can't count the number grizzly sightings and meetings I had in my years exploring. The trick is to remain calm and show zero aggression. Back off slowly. Congrats on your life time memory. It's what makes exploring Glacier do special. Wait until you have a mountain lion encounter or a wolf encounter. Fun!!

Great video, Rande. I happened to be watching another hiker hiking up the Siyeh trail who also ran into a couple of grizzly bears. The grizzly bears were aware of the hikers, but were more focused on turning over rocks looking for some food. Sounds like you had a great trip visiting Glacier.

Wow, glad it all worked out. I agree with your end of video comment, don't want to see them in person, but also want to. It's a risk reward type of experience. Keep filming as your videos continue to be appreciated and are impressive.

Oh my! That sounds a bit scary to me. But it sounds like you did everything right. I remember my visit to Glacier and how signs were posted throughout the park warning about the bears. What a beautiful healthy looking sow and cubs though! So glad it turned out well. And what an adventure!

Hey Randy, Joyce and I were out at glacier this past September. And we saw our first grizzly in the meadow at the river, but we were about 100 yards away. That thing was huge. I couldn’t imagine coming up on a mother and her cubs. Glad things worked out for all of us. Oh, and we almost got rundown by Bighorn sheep running down the trail at Two Medicine. That took us by surprise🤣🤣🤣

Amazing video! Glad everything ended up OK. I had a similar experience during Sep of 2021. I hiked Shangri-la with a guy I just met at the Many Glacier Campground. It's an off trail hike to Iceberg Lake. He was leading the way when I looked up and saw a hugh grizzly 20 feet in front of us. I grabbed my bear spray & yanked him back. Luckily the bear was more interested in digging for roots than attacking us. After looping way around we watched the bear take a swim in a high plateau lake to cool off before we desended down to Iceberg Lake & back to our campground. This amazing experience could have ended in disaster. Being the more experienced "woodsman" I should have been in the lead the entire time. I'll never make that mistake again. Anyways great video. Another great video. I’ll be there later this year. I’ve been debating solo hiking vs taking some buddies. As you mentioned, groups are better than going solo in bear country. Bear educated groups with multiple bear defense options.

If Mama had found a good berry patch, she is intent on gorging. Since hyperphagia is driving her, she is not going to yield. She knew that you were approaching: if she had been surprised, her reaction would have been different. In Fall, huckleberry and serviceberry seem to be favorites and are abundant. Today is March 18, 2024: two days ago the first bear of the season was spotted 1/4 mile from my home in the Flathead Valley of NW Montana, 50 miles south of Glacier.

I'm Glad you had this encounter without incident. People can think they are prepared to handle the situation but when you get in it, things get real very quickly. Good job and be safe out there.

Bears looked pretty chill to me. Luckily the cubs were close by mama.

Always have bear spray. Im surprised mama bear didn't go into protection mode. Ya don't run. About three feet away you can use spray. Nice video. Winds are bad the spray will be right back at ya. Glad your safe.

10 minutes after, bear spray stored back in your pack strap, with the safety still OFF. 😂😂 Bears will certainly get the adrenaline going!

Being within 20-30 yards of a mama grizzly is absolutely terrifying. Looks like you handled it extremely well under the circumstances. Do you carry on your hikes? I know bear spray is the preferred method but unfortunately it’s not always reliable, especially in rainy or windy conditions.

Yikes Randy! Scary, but an incredible experience I'm guessing. We were just in a black bear habitat area with signs everywhere warning it was a habitat. I've gone from alligator warnings to bear warnings... Interesting to know to not make direct eye contact. I'll file that one away.

Beautiful footage, of iconic animals in one of the most magnificent parks in N.America. The mother bear must be familiar with humans and knows she and her cubs are safe in the park, plus trophy hunting of G.bears is banned in BC, which I think is good, trophy hunting of any species is just killing for fun. If G.bear t.hunting is banned it makes it easier to end all t. hunting as most outfitters make $100,000 from g.bear hunting.

I don't understand how you would NOT expect to see Griz on any glacier hike ❓️Especially since I'm reading more about them being seen now farther east in Mt.

Something happened to me in Glacier last year. Ran into two Grizzlies on separate occasion, even though I was making noise. No cubs though. Bears showed no interest in me.

I’m gonna be honest. I have very very little confidence in bear spray deterring an angry grizzly. That couple that died with their dog due to a Grizzly attack in Canada had sprayed an entire bottle and for a determined grizzly, it didn’t matter.

With all the hiking and places you've been to, this was bound to eventually happen! I'm glad the bears didn't really care too much about you. The fact that it was windy would have been tough to use the spray. It could blow back onto you or not go the direction you want it. Plus, you don't want to traumatize the cubs by temporarily incapacitating their mother. I'm glad everything turned out ok, my friend.

One thing I am scared to encounter. I hope to remember what to do on my hikes.

Did you report your encounter to a ranger? I think they'll close trails to hiking if bears are in the area.

so basically you did everything you're not supposed to: hiking alone in grizzly country during fall when bears are foraging, not making enough noise to make your presence known, filming a mother bear with yearling cubs from 30 yards away instead of immediately backing up and staring directly at the bears. You were lucky, very lucky.

You did the correct thing. Attacks occur when people make themselves prey, by running, yelling, screaming, surprising bears and not facing them while standing, no eye contact, don't smile and show teeth. A sow with cubs, that are closer, best to drop in fetal position, protecting neck and head. Keep quiet. She may swat you, but not attack you. Wait until they move on, then slowly leave. Don't do that with males.

I heard that bear spray is useless against Grizzlies. Just pisses em off.
